the bee vol iv university of buffalo january 17 1924 no 14 basketball team victorious over hobart quintet football loss avenged on court by score of 31 to 18 outplayed at all stages of a compar atively uninteresting court set-to the much expected hobart basketball quint wont down to an easy defeat at the lmnds of art powell's blue and white hnopsters last friday evening pining to the fore from the first mast of the referee's whistle the v li oval dribblers maintained a bteady advantage over the visiting delegation i to finally end the scoring with a 31 to i 17 victory with the satisfaction of having reg istered another court win comes alsi the gratification of having also avenged ihe defeat handed u b gridders by the orange and purple during last fall's football season oppose football representation captained by the giant kraus the i hobart lineup presented exclusively a combination of past l'urple and gold football artists however their we'l proven ability on the gridiron was in no manner suggested in their attempts to wrest basketball honors from art powell's proteges they display in tact a surprising inability to cope with the artistry if the blue and white which from the outset placed them at the mercy of the local attacks bleg-el stops kraus babe kraus the elongated ho bart captain touted as the hobar mainstay more than found his match in sam siegel the dependable blue and white tip-off man against the lanky u b flash the purple and fold cap tain was unable to stretch his height enough to gain the tip-off nor was he able to penetrate an effective defense sufficiently to register more than once from under the uprights siegel on he other hand on the offense played his usual steady floor game which hi hefty opponent was unable to interrupt purple and furrls fast louie farris and don purple came up to usual form in their evening's performance both playing their usual fast games in forward berths farris however found himself well checked by the untiring kiley who with trap nell carried off the honors for the ho bart representation bobby cantor re placing purple for his first appearance with the varsity made an lmpressiv showing in the exhibition of a flashy floor game and the garnering of f difficult side-shot guards play well jimmy ailinger came in for his usual share of steady dependable guarding and floor work holding beggs score hss from the field and himself register ing two from under the uprights capt sam vanini held the tricky trapnell well in check finding time once however to dribble through for a court under the backboard los beiiove who start ed in place of capt vanini gave a pleasing exhibition of aitwtic court wor and did justice to his position at guard buffalo started the ball rolling with in the first few minutes of play sicgol was the first to start the u b scoring registering once from the chalkmark and following a minute later with a pretty shot from under the basket trapnell eluded beiiove to score a fleu basket for the visitors berlove re taliated by slipping a single from tin foul line and farris and beggs fol lowed suit for single points from their respective chalkmarks trapnell makes hobart ties trapnell made th only purple and gold threat of the game possible when he registered from the field to place ms quint on even terms at five all purple following the ball like a hawk then came in to score a trio of field goals and then made way for vanini who registered twice from the foul mark ailinger closed the scoring of the first half with two attempts from under the uprights one on a prett dribble through the opposing forces and the other on a long pass from purple the whistle found buffalo leading by 12 with the score at half time 17 to f visitors threaten in second half a desperate hobart rafly placed the purple and gold within c points of over coming the u b lead kraus regis tered his first contribution to the ho bart cause when a long pass from kilcy to the hobart captain under the up rights gave the latter position for an easy shot kiley followed with the diz ziest shot of the game a one-hande 1 al zisser athletic publicity director alfred zisser sport editor
