the bee vol iv university of buffalo december 6 1923 no 10 arts pharmacy hear bowdoin college head president sills criticizes coaching from sidelines independence of spirit and of poin of view is move necessary and desirable than the undergraduate would think said president sills of bowdoin col j lege in addressing the students anv faculty of the arts college and thi school of pharmacy tuesday morning december 4th in foster hall while passing through buffalo president sill was induced to visit the university and talk to the students and faculty in introducing president sills chan cellor capen said that there were probably no two institutions moro diverse than bowdoin college and tlio arts college of the university of buf falo bowdoin college is an old in stitution with traditions of long stand ing while the arts college is verjl young and possessed of few traditions president sills extended the greet ings of bowdoin and of the other new england institutions while in minor matters such as tradition and point of view bowdoin may differ from buffalo yet in all essential there is unity he maintained bowdoin and buffalo aim for the same end to produce better citizens and make for happier lives as his topic president sills chose the subject of intellectual independence nothing is more deadly than overstandr ardization he stated undergraduate i should be encouraged to think for themselves independence and toler ance of thought should prevail in uuij versities at oxford the speaker pointed out students in english must form theii own judgments of literature pre-di geited opinions in essays are not eveiv read by the student he must form his own judgment and he can defend any thesis that appeal to him to ne worthy president sills then proceeded to at tack the manner in which students ari robbed of their iniative and independ ence in american universities through the sideline coaching developed j athletics whether or not he wa.s hitting the university of buffalo in thi regard president sills said he did no know it may be fortunnte that h visited bulfalo after the close of out football seiiscn president sills then showed how under coaching from the bide lines the team becomes a mere machine intercollegeate eompetitionr are thus reduced to struggles between professional coaches and the students play but a minor role social affairs came in for their share of comment when president sills chnrg ed that they were being over standard ized it is not desirable that in social bearing everyone should behave alike to acquire the faculty of thinking foi yourself is really the objective of edu cation for education should not be the mere acquiring of knowledge most of the fourth hour classes were dismissed so that everyone might havq the opportunity of hearing president sills inasmuch as regular college as semblies can not be held for want of adequate facilities all such occasions u that of tuesday morning should b taken full advantage of masonic order plans u b scholarship the past masters association of erie county is giving an informal dance at the elmwood music hall on thursday evening dec 6 1923 for the purpose of raising part of the funds to be used for one two or pos sibly three scholarships for tuition at the university of buffalo the masonic order is planning to send at least one and probably two or three sons or daughters of masons through the university the scholar ships will provide the tuition and if the applicant is very needy may en tirely support him part of the funds for these scholar ships has already been raised the interest thus manifest by the masonic order may certainly be con sidered a good omen for the university of buffalo and shows to what an ex tent our institution of learning is being watched by the community art powell needs men for basketball team the university of buffalo has always ranked among the brat institutions in the land in basketball it has been cus tomary for the students aftey a poor season in football to turn hopefully toward basket ball as the field in which u b could regain laurels lost on tin gridiron if u b is to turn out a team in keeping with the blue and white teams of past years more candidates must come ouk for this years quintet art powell still needs men many students in the university aru well known for their prowess on the basketball court and as yet they have not reported tc coach powell practice is hell every afternoon at rotary field and every student who has either experience in basket bull or a willingness to learn is urged to come out university women to aid u b girls about six hundred buffalo women interested in the welfare of the girl of the university attended the card party given by the american associa tion of university women on some of the university girls dressed in white with blue aprons and bands sold cakes and candy which had been provided by thci university association they alsij assisted in ushering the guests to their splendidly showed its interest u the women student of the univer sity and all of the co-eds join in ex i'^sing their thanks for the help given ' them basketball team to open season friday dec 14th mechanics institute to be first opponent for u b quintet the varsity basketball team will open the 1923-1924 season againnst me chanics institute of rochester decem ber 13th at elmwood music ball this is the first game of a schedule which brings some of the biggest uni versities to buffalo to meet our basket ball quintet last year mechanics institute gave the varsity quite a tussle before geiing down to defeat while art powell in tends to give them a dose of the same medicine this year it is better tn await the outcome of the game before talking of victory it is hoped that few stu dents will miss the opportunity of looking our 11123-1924 university basket ball team over for the first time boosting the return of such varsity ' veterans as captain sam vanimii san 1 siegtl jimmy ailinger and lauie farris all tried and true tossers of the bounding sphere the large squad ii ' charge of coach powell at rotary field has devolved into the most spirit ed talented aggregation of varsity as pirants ever gathered for u b basket ball competition freshman team intact conspicuous among those who ime returned to the bailey avenue club house is the entire personnel of the undefeated frosh team of last year composed of jimmy robinson and bob potter flashy guards ewart culp and ' ' bing ' ' purple forwards and the elongated bill potter custodian of the pivot berth these cracks con querers of every high school and freshman quint in the vicinity are back in full force and are making hot bids for regular berths si-minlit and sangrie oat another notable addition to tlir blue and white is the redoubtable allie schmitt erstwile caiusius lumin ary who comes undisputedly one of the best basketball tossers ever turned out by the main street institution no less auspicious is the advent of peel laughrie former hobart crack and unanimous selection for the all-state team les berlove roches ter flash is also to be found at the rotary court and with him comes howie potter mainstay of last year weeks of dec 3rd and dec 10th it was originally planned to hold the ex hihit only for the week of dec 3rd but it appears desirable to continue t lie exhibition for another week in order to permit the entire university to see and inspect it i there is an elusive charm about an old-time book the very dust nestling in its folds has a secret all its own the mystery of its getting there every fingerprint and notatia is sacred for they are the marks of generations that have lived with it and loved it the rare book touches the animus of antiquity it is compact with the ele ments of enduring truth and beauty it is permeated with associations and these associations of nationality per sonality historical significance artis tic trimuph have served in even great er degree than the intrinsic interest of the book as impetus to the collector and must surely stir the imagination and find the respect of the most prosaic observer this exposition being so internation ally representative varied in topic and rich in color will prove not only en joyable but informational and cultural as well it includes among others brilliant ly illustrated german french and ital ian books several precious greek mapuscripits antique illuminated so clesiastical documents a bound collec tion of russian magazines dating from the time of the japanese-russian war there is a copy of artlun s magazine published in philadelphia 1870 which boasts such contributors as longfellow whittier lowell godey's ladies dis play atrocities of 1902 uncle tom is present published in the hebrew a quarter of a century ago in poland and illustrated by a tartar george holmes ox michigan daily george h holmes jr erstwhile of the arts college of the university of buffalo and associate editor of the bee now of those who missed the first assembly at the medical school friday night nevember 21 are certainly deserving of sympathy it was held in alumni hall at 5 o clock dr aaron presided and dr mcdowell led the singing even an orchestra was not lacking howard dannee sure can play a banjo dean jones introduced chancellor capon who in a short speech com mended the medical school for the practice of holding these assemblies and said that he hoped the time would come when it would be possible for the entire university to hold frequent meetings of the same character the medical profession in this country is probably the most highly organized of any group of profes sional men anywhere this is some thing of which america should be proud csepcially of the excellent sys tem of training but because of the great amount of time required for medical training there is apt to be a tendency to isolation which should be strongly guarded against the great est doctors have been men who have lad their interests in life not in their work the medical student should follow their example in this and take as much of an interest in the student function of the university as they can after the chancellor's remarks
