the bee university of buffalo november 15 1923 vol iv no 8 lantern club of evening session holds meeting new organization plans dance for all u b students the men's club of the evening session at its weekly meeting friday evening nov 9th after a heated dis cussion decided that it will hereafter call itself and be called by others the lantern club the shaft's o light from the lantern club will gleam henceforth bright and brighter at this meeting there were about 40 members present all very keen and nthusiastie as evening session students are at all times the lantern club here decided to stage a live member ship campaign each and every even ing of the week of november 12th at townsend hall the club is very am bitious and will not he content until every man of the evening session is a member the first of the social activities of the lanterneers will be given sometime during the first week of december as an informal dance open to all univer sity students the next date of this function has not yet been decided up on but further particulars will be promptly forthcoming the lantern club hopes that at this informal dance the regular and tho evening session student may meet and get acquainted it is thus that the men of the evening session are at tempting to create school spirit and friendliness between themselves and the other schools and colleges more power to them womens club opens vocational conference the vocational conference was opened wednesday november 7 at a supper given under the auspices of the u b women's club at beichert's 484 delaware avenue miss ruth gary acted as toast mistress and the following prominent buffalo business women were speakers miss weiner a v b graduate m law and director of one of the largest biiffsilo community houses spoke on what college training means m social work miss margaret pyke who docs pub licity work for the buffalo public library told of the opportunities open for college women m newspaper work and journalism miss ruth chapin assistant superin tendent at the win hengerer co told what college training means m depart ment work miss thompson personnel supervisor of the dv pont manufacturing co spoke of the opportunities of working up to executive positions m industrial fields mrs noye president of the zonta club and executive secretary of th buffalo chapter of the american red cross used as her topic business ethics miss grace esterly of the appoint ment bureau gave the point of view from an employment bureau miss emma p hirth director of the bureau of vocational information m new york used vocations as her topic dean marsh in demand the city of buffalo seems fully alive to the possibilities offered to the even ing session of the university of buf falo at any rate dean marsh of the evening session is m great demand and is being requested to speak to the various clubs and organizations night ly on tuesday evening last dean marsh spoke to the men's club of th-j humboldt parkway m e church the topic under consideration is the hvo one the spirit of the evening session mi thursday evening last dean marsh spoke at the monthly meeting of the liutvalo association of ciedit men he considered the value of university training to credit men business department needs candidates the bee announces the openj ing of a series of competitions for positions on its business staff all candidates should report at townsend hall next tuesday evening the circulation and advertis ing staffs surely need strength 1 ening if the bee is to progress as it should the business end of a paper is the most import ant part m that the existence of the paper depends upon the efficacy of that department every student should par ticipate m an nndergraduato activity the freshmen class especially should not overlook the importance of so doing 1 selection of candidates will be based upon the work done m competitions lasting over periods of six weeks every student m the university is eligible to enter competitions for the bee staff and is urged to do so journalistic keys are awarded by the s a c foij service m this activity harrington lecture given by prof biedl the harrington lectures of the un iversity of buffalo were established through the generosity of the late dr d w harrington who was for some time professor of genito-urinary and venereal diseases m the school of medicine these lectures are given from time to time by distinguished scientists lectures have already been given by dr s j meltzer of new york m 1908 by dr j clarence web ster of chicago m 1910 by dr lud wig hektoen of chicago m 1912 by professor ludwig pick of berlin m 1914 by dr milton j rosenau of harvard university m 1916 and by professor francis g benedict direct or of the nutrition laboratory car negie institution of washington bos ton mass m 1921 the seventh lecture was given by professor a biedl of czechoslovakia on saturday november 10th at tlu school of medicine on *' adiposity of cerebral origin dr biedl is well known as one of the leading authorities on endocrinology he is professor of experimental pathology and director of the endocrine clinic at the un iversity of prague the lecture was well attended by the alumni of the university represent atives from other medical schools physicians of buffalo and surrounding towns and the faculty of the univer sity glee club must have support from students management will abandon trip if interest is not manifest the management of music announc ed this fall that a trip had been plan ned for the glee club and orchestra it was thought that the prospects of a weeks trip would stimulate a great deal of interest and bring out more candidates than usual on the con j trary interest m the varsity orchestra was so negative that its organization has been abandoned and a jazz or chestra with extraordinary prospects substituted nor has interest m the glee club been up to expectations at tention of the candidates for the glee club was called to the necessity of early organization and hard work duri ing the first 3 months of school if the plans for the season were to be cbxj ried out many of the members do not yet realize that persistent and con tinuous rehearsals are necessary even for the best singers the management has found it neces sary to cancel a joint concert with syracuse because of the uncertainty of the future of the glee club there is only one way that the university of buffalo glee club may hope to take its place with other college glee clubs and that is through the same spirit that makes a football team loyalty concerted effort and practise the faculty manager made it plain to thq gleo club on tuesday evening that unless a great deal more progress is shown before the xmas vacation plans for the trip will be abandoned it was suggested that rehearsals be held twice a week one rehearsal under the direction of the musical di rector and the other under the direction if a student leader now is the op portune time for those who are in terested m music to rally to the glee club and put it m the same class as this years band — the best ever dean marsh addresses u b club meeting dean marsh addressed the members of the u b club at its first meeting of the year tuesday nov 6th at the central y m c a dean gregory of the pharmacy school also spoke and it was through his efforts that pharm acy had a better showing m actual number of students than any other fchool what is a university was the subject of dean marsh s instructive and forceful talk a university con sists of five parts stated the dean of the evening session they are th board of trustees or university coun cil the buildings and equipment the alumni the faculty and the students dean marsh emphasized the importance of students awaking to their opportun ities m college the proportion of the population that has the chance for col lege education is but & fraction of one per cent to bring the point home dean marsh told of the eagerness and the thankfulness of students m tl.f evening session for education many of them had been denied the opportun ity when they left high school partici pation m student activities was also urged by the dean of the evening session the program also included several solos by mrs macfarquhar who was accompanied by miss ruth spaeth the next meeting of the u b club will be held on the evening of decem ber for something new every day may be m a near future dr squire will give us the lecture room so that we have a regular french lesson if not always successful frenchie does her best m the infirmary m the lab in the lab she is as noisy as most of the boys she mixes her english and french m her songs what does she say m her songs m all her con versation oui do you only know the meaning of these three french but i must stop i am nothing but frenchie s best friend and she will ill . ready be cro«s with me for being so talkative oui : central y membership drive successful the membership drive which has been m progress at the central branch v.m.c.a for the past ten days came to a most successful close last friday night at which time a dinner was en joyed by the teams new members am friends a total of five hundred and fifty now and renewal memberships were secured sfa prizes were announced at the start of the campaign of these six prizes two were carried off by members of the university of buffalo team third prize awarded to the team member securing the highest number of new members was won by henry appel senior dent he having secured live this prize was a handsome athletic sweater from the house of a li spalding & bros fourth prize was awarded to d b munson freshman law student for securing the second highest number of new members he came within one of the same number hint appel brought m this prize wbj choice of any statson hat at the hud son store the university of buffalo team is o be congratulated for the good show ing it made during the drive there were ten teams entered m the cam aign and the student team carried off one third of the prizes added to this the fact that this was the first time hat a student team was entered m a membership campaign and we have a record hard for future teams to beat w x y society for experimental biology tha tenth meeting of the western new york branch of the society for experimental biology and medicine was held at the university of buffalo medical school on saturday afternoon november 10th papers were present ed by dr byron d bowen of the u b faculty of medicine geo w pucher and iprty cori of buffalo and others urban universities hold convention in buffalo university host to educators of american nation prominent institutions rep resented in asso ciation the association of urban univer sities holds its th annual convention november 15-17 us the guest of the university of buffalo the association is composed of universities anil col leges which are located m large cities it was foimded m order to create a medium for the discussion of the spec ial problems which institutions so lo cated have to meet the membership is very miscelloneous there are state universities like the university of minnesota and the ohio state univer sity great private institutions like harvard john hopkins and the uni versity of pennsylvania municipality supported institutions like the univer sity of cincinnati and the college of the city of new york institutions whose field of work is restricted to technical education like the drexel in istitute and the case school of ap plied science the total membership now numbers between thirty and forty however varied i type the numbers may be they have m common the task of serving large urban centres prob lems of student life m such centers are peculiar the community frequently requires a more extensive and varied educational service traditional aca demic organization and procedure must often be departed from the popula tion with which these institutions are m dlroct contact is generally diversi i fled these facts have lead to the i union of this group of institutions for i the periodic discussion of their com mon problems in previous conventions therefore the association lias devoted much time to such subjects as evening education for adult students like that now being carried on m the evening session of the university of buffalo co-opera tive work with industries training for civil service university extension edu cation americanization the financing of urban universities the meetings of the association are generally informal and intimate discussions are of the round-table or der although interested member of the public have always been small this has proved a generally advan tage to the work of the association indeed most of its members have valued the intimacy of the meetings more than anything else the association has undoubtedly been largely responsible for the stimu lus that has brought the extraordinary development of evening university work m most of tin large cities it has also brought prominently into tho consciousness of university officers the universities responsibility m effective programs of americanization and of training for public service the principal topics for discussion at the convention to be held here arc americanization the organization oil junior and senior colleges m univer 11 evening education and the deter tion of the content of professional pre-professional training o following institutions have ul ready signified that they intend to send delegates ft if akron vauderbilt university of pittsburgh of cincinnati clark unit jstou university drexei university of toledo if minnesota college of new york evansville col lege hamline university hunter col lege of city of new men the first or second week m december last year the beta pi pho fraternity staged the first dance for the varsity men that was ever held m the university of buffalo the precedent has been considered a worthy one 1 to follow so this year the or ganization of student leaders will have charge of this im portant event the definite date for the dance will be announced m the next issue of the bee tho various fraternities will have charge of the selling of tickets the price of which is 2.50 the dance will be informal oar advertisers are buffalo's best patronize them all out for last home game saturday
