cluding english and is well known id the united states dr biedl is a foreign associate editor of the ameri can journal ' ' endocrinology ' ' on the staff of which professors frank a hartman and wayne j atwell of the medican faculty are associated i • bond expects victory most of us can well remember jim bond's encouraging speech when he first took over the reins of the team hi his remarks jim specifically men tioned hobart as one of the teams that buffalo should beat to this effect jim bond has been conducting some hard secret practico sessions that when the boys do go down to geneva they certainly should be prepared to give one rough battle university band to accompany grid men to geneva saturday though agreeably surprised by buf fajo's strong gridiron aggregation the alumni who turned out for the hamil ton contest on homecoming day were more impressed by the university band than by any other one thing that the university of buffalo which ranks with institutions of doubtful prestige in i'ootball should be able to produce a university band of the size and quality of the present organization excited much favorable comment from the old grada the university band has proved it self such a source of spirit at the home games that through the co-operation of the athletic association it will make the trip to geneva this saturday in a bus so as to be on hand for the | hobart game every student in whom there is latent the least bit of u b spirit should follow the team to geneva and help win the hobart game pew if any of the schools that ara rated in u b.'s class can boast of any band at all let alone such a splendid musical organization as the 1923-24 band in all tho band numbers nearly thirty pieces at all the home games it has been much in evidence lending t real college atmosphere to the var sity contests in arousing spirit and l>ep among the students at these games the band has been invaluable on other occasions has the band proved its value as a vital factor in university affairs on student's day the parade was headed by the u b liand if the student body had dis iiyed the spirit exhibited by the id ou that as well as on other ocea ns the students day parade would ra gone down in u b history as an nt of great proportions bigger and better than ever is ihrase that is often used about u.b ivities without due consideration to the facts in the cases but to describe present university band as bigger i better than ever would be to put it dly the band like the other musical or ganizations is under the capable direc tion of one of the hardest workers in the university for student activities dr a b lemon it is gratifying to know that his untiring efforts to get men out for the musical clubs is meet ing with success as the turn out for the band attests following is the band roll for 1923 1924 medicine — john korn sax ; werner rose trombone e p smith sax pharmacy — e j craig sax a e willsey trombone alman valk drums c e van seyke drums debate tryouts thursday for varsity team debaters to be chosen nov 15th for ho bart contest tryouts for the varsity debate team will be held next thursday evening november 15th at townsend hall the men finally selected will represent the university in the first intercollegiate debate of the year against hobart the third week in december at least six men will be chosen in the tryouts and the final selection will be made at a later date all those who survive the first tryout however will have an opportunity of represent ing the debate club if not against hobart at least before various buffalo chilis including the university al all candidates are requested to pre pare a five minute speech on s a phase of the question besolved that the power of the supreme court to de i'lare acts of congress unconstitutional be restricted speeches can be on either side of the question this sub ject will be used as the question for the hobart debate the regular meeting of the debate club will be held on the same evening as the tryouts instead of on xov 8th the business meeting can take place while the candidates await the result of the consultation of the judges tho hobart debate will be held in buffalo probably at the hutchinson high school auditorium shortly before i christmas holidays it will open intercollegiate debating season for university of buffalo after ho the next opponent for u b may tew york university which is send a team on a western trip they d like to include u b in their tripi if satisfactory arrangements can be con cluded it will be remembered that new york university is the school that sent a debate team to europe two years ago which would indicate how highly debating has been developed a all men students in the university are eligible to try out for the varsity team whether they are members of the debate club or not lack of sufficient material has long prevented the uni evrsity of buffalo from turning out a championship grid aggregation the same principle is tine in all activities to surpass last years record it is neces sary to have more men out for the team for service on the debate team tho s a c awards gold keys this year several trips are planned for the de baters tho valuable training debat ing affords in itself is sufficient in centive for an unprecedented turn out of candidates i dr whitmore addresses chemistry students dr frank c whitmore of north western university evanston i made a special trip to buffalo inorder to ad dress the chemistry students on or ganic compounds of mercury dr l^hitmore is one of the recognised authorities in his field and in his splendid address lay emphasis upon thq possible uses of the organic compounds of mercury in medicine it was largely through the instru mentality of dr reigel of the school of pharmacy that dr whitmore waa brought to buffalo honorary society to install u b chapter all members of the national honor society phi kappa phi are requested to communicate with professor wayne j atwell at by at zisseb fiercely fought contest results in 7 to 6 win metz's toe comes in handy and vanini stars on defense buffalo has found itself three thousand enthusiastic fans bear eager witness to the fact that the lighting spirit of the bison eleven is not merely a fickle whim but an actual glorious reality that has come to stay last saturday furnished plenty of opportunity for the local boys to show their wares fighting all through all sessions of the fracas the bisons amply demonstrated their prowess against as redoubtable a foe as the strong hamil ton contingent in fact so eager were both teams for a victory and so hard did they fight that in some portions of the game playing developed into furious frcefor iill fighting in which rough playing and fistruffing took place it was only the rough play and the exceedingly faulty rulings of the re feree that spoiled the effect of the 7 to 6 u b victory attended by some of the poorest officiating ever witnessed on the bailey lot the frequent argu ments and penalties did much to slow up proceedings but nevertheless even this could not hide the brand of play ing that the local collegians uncovered k1capp and b08etcg-rawt star again regulations concerning the use of tlie museum en trance to foster hall are to be put into force this friday the old rules although never made in an arbitrary spirit have been repeatedly violated and it is to insure complete fairness to everyone concerned that they are to be revised beginning friday the doors to the museum entrance will be open to everyone on the days when weather permits at all other times they are to be closed and locked and the base ment entrances are to be used since these rules apply to all members of the faculty as well as to students it is difficult to see how any objection can be raised to them university jazz orchestra ready for engagements ollowing is a list of names of can ates selected for the u b jazz orchestra by mr harry slick on wed nesday evening october 31st the names are arranged in the order of their preference determined by de monstrated talent appearance am general fitness this does not mean that the first named candidates may retain the preference the first job played may indicate the necessity of a change this is itself sufficient reason why all who have come out for the jazz orchestra should continue to at tend rehearsals this will not be a dosed orchestra any more than the first team is a permanent team bet ter men always will be in demand since this is a new project the man agement of music has assumed the selection of a
