the bee university of buffalo february 14 1930 no 15 vol 10 dr alfred zimmern to speak at fenton foundation lecture democracy is topic of director of geneva school professor alfred zimmern director nf the geneva school of international studies will lecture on the future of democracy at the grosvenor library tuesday and wednesday eve nings february 18 and 19 at 8:15 under the auspices of the fenton foundation the lectures are free and university members and general public are cordially invited the fenton foundation m bringing professor zimmern to buffalo intro duces a figure not only of interna tional importance but of peculiar lo cal interest because of his connection with the university of buffalo through the geneva school of inter national studies our university is the only american school affiliated with the geneva school of which mr zimmern is director and he has shown his sincere friendship by visiting u b whenever he has been m this coun try in addition to his post as direc tor of the geneva school of interna tional studies professor zimmern holds the position of deputy director of the international institute of in tellectual co-operation league of nations he has written a number of books on governmental and poli tical subjects among them the greek commonwealth america and democracy learning and leader ship and the third british em pire use of proceeds from card party quickly decided members of cap and gown senior women's honorary society were host esses to the alumnae at a most successful card party m the women's lounge on january 25th a large group of interested graduates attend ed and spent the afternoon playing bridge dean mac donald and the members of cap and gown received the guests tea was served at five clock winifred stanley president of cap and gown society gave a short talk welcoming the guests ami announced that the card party is to lipcome an annual affair because of its great success the proceeds of the card party will '«• used to refurbish the women's lounge a room which affords great pleasure to the entire university cap and gown members wish to thank those who attended this first card party and helped to make it such a success dr meiklejohn to feature mid year convocation the annual mid-year convocation anil commencement will take place saturday morning february 22 m the edmund hayes hall auditorium the program will feature dr alex ander meiklejohn who is m charge of the experimental college at the uni versity of wisconsin or meiklejohn will discuss recent experiments m modern college organ ization including wisconsin as well as other colleges this topic should prove interesting to all a greater number of students than usual will receive degrees at the mid year commencement exercises can didates will be announced later mem bers of the council deans and heads of secondary institutions of the city will be seated on the platform they as well as the faculty will appear m colorful academic costumes new men discussed at meeting of bison head last friday the senior men's hon orary society bison head met at the alumni club plans were discussed for the tapping of the new members at the junior prom next friday it was decided that the tapping would take place directly after the junior dance arrangements were also begun for the annual dance given m honor of the basketball team john s allan of the law school will be the general chairman he will be assisted by frank dressier melvin weig delano rice and walter murphy the dance will probably be held on march 21 it is planned to engage a well-known orchestra for the occasion and every effort will be made to make this the biggest dance ever m honor of the best team buffalo has ever had relations club discuss league of nations the international relations club held a most interesting meeting m the government documents room of the grosvenor library last thursday eve ning two seniors m the arts col lege debated on the advisability of american social events featured by tea dance melody boys to furnish music for occasion each year junior week brings with it a host of brilliant and unforget table events the tea dance which occupies the limelight of informal so cial events of the week will be held on wednesday february 19th from four until seven-thirty and both the place and the orchestra which have been secured are ideal the alumni club will be opened for this date and plans are being made for a novel arrangement of both dancing and bridge the committee may well boast of both excellent taste and good for tune m securing the melody boys to furnish the music tea bridge danc ing and a full three hours and a half of rare fun and sociability are in cluded m the admission fee of seventy-five cents so secure your tickets as soon as possible elaborate plans have been formulated to assure a good time for everyone at one of the most successful all-university affairs that any junior class has ever sponsored roe fulkerson keep fit bon voyage dean gregory men's glee club to entertain at third college tea the third college tea of the season at the first presbyterian church given for students of the university of buffalo and of the state teachers college will be held sunday evening february 23rd the men's glee club of the university will present a pro gram of music at the five o'clock community vesper preceding the tea and dr edward a steiner of grin nell college grinnell lowa will dis cuss the question is america grow ing up at the tea dr steiner will answer questions from the students he is frequently referred to as the great authority on the immigrant and one of the most attractive fig ures on the americal social platform his keen sense of humor always en livens every question period he con ducts several years ago dr steiner was the guest and speaker at a col lege tea and on that occasion all stu dents spontaneously rose to their feet cheering dr steiner at the close of the evening g m f society elects officers next wednesday convocation hour wednesday feb ruary lit will be reserved for student organization meetings it is the pur pose of the student council to give over one period a month for such meetings the g m f society will hold election of officers at this time further announcements will be placed on the bulletin board junior frolic to follow banquet next thursday thursday at 6 p m the juniors will attend a banquet before being enter tained along with the other classes at the junior frolic m edmund hayes hall the frolic will afford that long hoped for opportunity of seeing one's friends exhibit their abilities this will be amateur night for buffalo stu dents and a riot of fun is promised the junior banquet a strictly class affair will be held at weinert's on thursday february 20th at 6 p m a chicken dinner at 1.00 a plate will be served at the tea room on main street just beyond bailey ave nue and a real reunion will follow the l.oo ticket for the dinner will admit juniors the depart ment of sociology has received a no tice from the new york school of social work announcing fellowships m that institution for the coming year the fellowships amount to con siderable sums m
