no 14 vol 10 the bee university of buffalo january 24 1930 committee draws plans for block b dinner march 24 organizations are requested to make reservations early that the jubilee block b dinner on march 21st will be the best on record is evident from the plans drawn tues day night by the committee into whose hands it has been given the committee represents a cross section of active members of the adminis tration faculty student body and alumni and is headed by dr robert p dobbie as chairman and dr j cialvin woodworth vice-chairman through the medium of this commit tee the ticket sale started on wed nesday the statler ballroom will be filled to capacity since the merriment this year is open to members of the fair sex as well as the stalwarts of the university the tables will seat ten and reservations for fraternities sor orities and organizations may be made with mr blackburn by leaving a deposit early engagement is nec essary as the rule of first come first served will be followed in allocating the tables beta pi rho fraternity has made the first reservation the committee consists of t.hp fol 1 honorary society discusses choice of new members last thursday night bison head the senior men's honorary society held a meeting at the alumni club the discussion centered around the choice of new men for next year every year the society selects those juniors in the university who have been outstanding in student activities and who will be the leaders in their benlor year to carry on the laurels of the society the custom which has grown up during the past few years of taking the men at the junior prom will be continued this year it was decided however to varry the procedure previously used committee makes orchestra choice for junior prom the junior prom committee has taken a step which will make the prom of 1930 a memorable success dan murphy and his musical skippers from boston mass have been en gaged and words cannot express the type of music which this band can produce in the past the musical skippers have played at the cornell and university of pennsylvania proms so that it goes without say ing that this year will see a better u of b prom than ever before the committee is also extending it self in planning decorations for the ballroom which up to this time have been woefully lacking time is short to get that date and if it's encouragement he needs girls don't fail to give it to him all out for the junior prom of 1930 g m f club held as exponent of sports enthusiasm this g m f club is the greatest exponent of enthusiasm that this uni versity has experienced in ages there will be no more dead games and silent cheering sections if this picturesque group keeps up its present work at last wednesday's game the cheer leaders and the g m f section kept excitement high by using every lull of the game in demonstrating perfect cheering u b has waited many years for just such spirit it is understood that this blue and white mantled band is going to or ganize in the near future with strong capable officers the g m f should zoom school spirit to unknown regions this spirit if directed right would bring nation-wide recognition of the true worth of our alma mater business and industry constantly seek men of trained intelligence business and industry are seeking in constantly increasing measure for men of trained intelligence says colonel r j rees assistant vice president of the american telephone and telegraph company they look to the colleges and universities for ability and high capacity these employers expect to find men able to think and to work with trained intelligence analytical ability and sound judgment based on funda mental knowledge campus life de velops co-operation and the college education assists the student in clari fying his life's objective factors in college life which may indicate future success would be of great value to both teachers and em ployers if they could be discovered no doubt the courses of study are most significant a well-ordered cur riculum aimed at a definite objective is surely one of the best evidences of specific interest other elements are academic work extra-curricular activ ities and the necessity for outside work by many students the bell system studied the rela tion between scholastic records and business success for 3,806 men di vided into classes of the first tenth first third middle third and lower third progress on the basis of sal ary was the index since it was felt that in a large organization this was unusually accurate at the end of ten years after grad uating the men in the first tenth re ceived ten per cent more salary than the average at twenty years after thirty per cent more and at thirty years after fifty-five per cent more the lower third at thirty years after was twenty per cent below the aver age this inconclusive picture seems to be normal employers will always look on a man's scholastic record as evidence of how well he did in a pre vious job it is self-evident that the student should so budget his time that he may give his major attention and concentration to the important objective of his college life — education — and relate his other obligations to it in a proper balance appropriation is given for research of dr humphrey word has recently been received that a grant of three hundred dollars bas been appropriated to the univers ity of buffalo to aid dr r r humph rey associate professor of anatomy m the completion of his studies on sex reversal in amblystoma the ffrant is awarded by the national re search council from funds available w the committee for research in i'roblems of sex the award comes as a recognition of the high value of searches already made by dr humphrey in this field and
