will he used for equipment in the physical labora tory a five-minute ovation follow ed the announcement of mr mcnutt s most generous gift in his address chancellor capen mentioned the first inaugural address ot the man whose anniversary was celebrated upon university day washington's address is a most ex traordinary document slated the chancellor although it was exces sively ponderous and full of rhetoric and contained no discussion of cur rent issues still it has gone down into history because of the two ideas which it contained washington's address extolled bjr chancellor first because he did not wish to hecome president of the united states and secondly because he did not want a salary if he did accept thai posi tion tliis speech furnishes a most fruitful text for university students wahington always emphasized tin idea of service most of the public papers of that period dealt with rights and that was natural la-cause th rights of the people had recently been invaded hut washington dealt with service and i think that offers tin opproprlate text for students today there was tt time when persona went to universities for the sake of individual advancement that has slowly but surely been displaced and university students tire learning more the lesson of service which washing ton emphasized the chancellor likewise mentioned the pledge which is taken by the students of the un iversity of oregon and commended it to the attention of v i students devlin kills position of spokesman must brilliantly in welcoming the chancellor upon behalf of the students mr devlin said in part chancellor capen opposes national school system dr capen in an address bo fore tlhe annual convention ol the department of superin tendence of the national edu cation association in clevel and reject the proposal oi president harding to create a department of education and welfare the majority of opinions expressed yesterday would indicate that the sterl ing-owner hill will he endors ed in his address the chancel lor pointed out that the streiifrth of american educ.i tion lies chiefly in its diver sity its flexibility and it freedom chess club soon to announce schedule tourna ment is speaking will be in or der this evening at the regular meet ing of the debate dub at townsend hall according to the program com mit tec further details have not been divulged hut an interesting time is in store for any student who cares to attend president hovey sends out a call to each and every member of the debate club to turn out to night for a real rousing meeting a few business matters of more than ordinary importance will proba bly come in for their share od discus sion affiliation with a national or ganization of debating clubs has been urged as the proper step in keeping with the a bat ing activities of the university in fact invitations from some of the larger organizations have been received and action is wuting upon this meeting therefore it is imperative that the attendance to night should be little short of 100 it has been suggested that nc newed interest could best he obtained by a debate between the law school and the arts college in which the varsity men do not take part more over the valuable training which such a debate would afford would undoubtedly be of great assistance in preparing material for future varsity combinations the debate club conducts a cam paign for membership from its first meeting in september to its last meeting in may any prospective members need not wait till next year merely because there is a varsity team already selected now is the time to get into the game if you de sire to make the next team a de bate club to be truly effective must have a largo and active membership vortl while discussions under such conditions lake on a spirit and an interest which make meetings events long looked forward to accomplishing the impossible college news service the regularity with which we con clude that further advances in a par ticular field are impossible seems equalled only by the regularity with which events prove that we are of too limited vision says dr w r whit ney director of the research labor - atoriea of the general electrical com pany and it seems til ways to he those who have the fullest opportun ity to know who are the most lim ited in view for example the well known amer ican astronomer simon newcomb once declared the demonstration that no possible combination of known substances known forms of machin ery and known forms of force can he united in jl practicable machine by which men shall fly long distances through the air seems to the writer as complete as it is possible for the demonstration of any physical pact to he but let us discover a sub stance a hundred times as strong ns steel and with that some form of force hitherto unsuspected which will enable us to utilize this strength or let tis discover some way of reversing the law of gravitation so that mat ter may be repelled by the earth in stead of attracted — then we may have a flying machine but we have every reason to believe that more in genious contrivances with our pres ent means and forms of force will he as vein in the future ae they have been in the paat u b women's club the l b women's chili held their meeting last night at townsend hall miss rhoda harris recently return ed f i om work in poland spoke to the girls
