foster hall is beginning to take on the appearance of a real habi tat in place of the bare coldness of an empty room we now look in upon a cozy homelike place just suitable for its purpose a recreation room for the co-eds for this luxurious convenience the girls of the university owe a two fold thanks the executive ability and perfect strategy of dean mcdonald served as the all-essential spark that caused the enthusiasm of the univer sity women to burst into flame several months ago the university women held a card party at the university of buffalo alumni club house due to the management and interest instilled into the affair it was a novel success almost six hun dred dollars was raised which sum was to pay for furnishing the girl's room in foster hall owing to the excessive number of large orders to be filled the factory failed to send the furniture to the university until this week but the extended period of waiting only serv ed to add to the appreciation by the co-eds the room is beautifully and artis tically furnished and needs but few additional touches to complete its cozy appearance what with the soft-toned rugs spacious well*cush ioned davenports and immensely com fortable arm-chairs what more could be asked for except perhaps — a mir ror dean mcdonald this week formally announced the opening of the room the senior girls are to act as hostes ses for this year but our restriction is placed upon this room and this the girls must keep to the letter abso lutely no one is to eat lunch in this room the loyalty and spirit of the undergraduates will cau.se not the slightest infraction of this rule the room is to be used as a recep tion room for visitors at the univer sity and the near future will find it the scene of galliant activities for alleghany state park varsity crushes hobart basketball team under 39-20 score — farris and vanini shine for local quintet presenting a stonewall defense and an uncanny shooting eye at all times tho clever blue and white band of basketeers won a well-earned victory over the court aggregation bearing the colors of hobart college at elm wood music hall on friday night tri umphing 39-20 art powell's charges outplayed the visitors in every department of the game and at all times they shot with deadly accuracy and their passwork was of the super-excellent variety on defense the blue and white performers worked to perfec tion in the tussle which marked the second defeat of hobart at the hands of the queen city five this season the down-staters were simply out classed as in the niagara tussle the fea ture of the game was the sensational shooting and floor work of louie karris who bids fair to become the in divided luminary of the present court campaign the former hutchinson star netted three goals from the field as well as dropping 13 out of 14 foul shots directly through the iron ring his teamplay was excellent and of a brand here-to-fore undisplayed on the local squad this season inability to penetrate the u b de fense combined with a somewhat listless and weak attack is what in the end spelled defeat for hobart's charges the powell outfit showed remarkable speed turning an other wise gloomy game into a spectacular affair by shooting with skill from all angles and by accurate and brilliant passwork the locals cut fast and scored nearly all their baskets from under the net or quarter court while the downstaters failing to work the ball down the court was forced to try many a heave from the region of mid-court powell's < barges in lend throughout the score fails to give any inkling as to how completely the guests of the evening were outclassed taking the lead in the initial period the queen city lads maintained it throughout never leaving the final outcome in doubt once in the entire game did the visitors show any play ing that could compare favorably with the buffalo style and that came at the beginning of the middle stanza when krause caged three in short order during the middle of the closing half buffulo eased in its attack and the visitors began a rally but the lo cals recovered and again the hobart delegation was unable to ring the bell when proceedings opened the blue and white started a drive that garnered nine ponts before the gen eva squad was able to score a point hobart shifted its line-up in the sec ond session hut was unable to cope with the brilliant style of the local athletes hobart held scoreless for twelve minutes the downstaters were unable to break into the scoring column until 12 minutes of the first half had elap sed when they made good on a pen alty throw by krause the first field goal was hurled by beggs four min utes later the locals gathered in 11 points before hobart counted fi*t all at the end of the first period the score read 17 to 5 with powell's charges on the big end in this half buffalo played fast clean basketball and its passing was little short of perfect however in the next frame the locals seemed to lose the direction of the basket and many easy shots flivvered a de cided laxity by the referee in watch ing the number of steps in taking shots brought forth many howls of protest which cannot be laid to ho bart's favor vaiilnt heiihis scoring in opening half things were started by the local snappy defense artist vanini who sneaked under the uprights and counted two points farris followed with a throw from quarter-court and registered a free throw a minute later siegel counted from mid-court and evans registered an easy throw rogers scored on a follow-p shot and then krause rang the bell for ho bart's first tally on a throw from the pealty mark farris registered twice from the foul line and followed with a nifty two-pointer vanini added two more debaters win unanimous decision at geneva varsity defeats hobart team 3 to 0 splendid victory on allied debt question the university debate team auspic iously opened its program of intercol legiate combats when it triumphed over hobart by a 3 to 0 count last friday evening at geneva the u b debaters in upholding the affirma tive of the allied war debt question showed marked superiority through out the presentation and rebuttal both in argumentation and in the art of speaking although the hobart de baters furnished a spirited resistance there was no doubt as to the out come from the very start in re trieving last year's loss the debato team firmly established the position of the university of buffalo in tho intercollegiate debating world the u b debaters were fred dev lin sidney farber and justin mor gan hobart was represented by clifford orr fred davis and henry loutlt the exact question was re solved that the allied war debt to the united states should be can celled buffalo most disputatious city in introducing the first speaker to the attentive audience of 200 hobart rooters dr r w thatcher chair man called attention to the fact that the four boys representing hobart as well as the four boys representing buffalo were all residents of buffalo all of which the chairman claimed went to show that buffalo was tho most disputatious municipality in new york state fred devlin open ed the debate and showed how from a moral standpoint the allied nations owed us nothing we have not paid our way for the allies gave in their life blood while we furnished money morover the benefits occuring to tho united states from the war more than warrant cancellation of the debt mr devlin said in substance the difficult task of breaking the ice which was mr devlin's lot was hand led in a masterful manner the buf falo captain with powerful voice and argument made an initial impression which the negative could not erase in reply howard loutlt of hobart held that the war was an european struggle long brewing for the mar kets of the world the united states only entered when its interests vi r i at stake mr loutlt maintained furope unable to pay sidney farber second speaker for the university of buffalo laid down the general proposition that eleven bil lion dollars in economic goods could not be taken from europe without crippling her industries depreciated exchanges national debts and foreign trade statistics were pointed to in substantiation of this argument by mr farber fred davis of hobart cited the means by which europe could meet her obligations this speaker called attenlon to the indemnities and ter ritories of the allied nation acquired through tho war as well as to the amount of their foreign investments morgan loses affirmative case concluding the presentation for buffalo justin morgan declared that payment would have most disastrous economic effects upon the united states he pointed to historic ex amples and showed specifically how one billion dollars of imports annully would throw the wheels of industry out of gear the undeniable logic of his argument coupled with the excel lence of his delivery was not without its effect clifford orr the hobart captain summed up for the negative open ing with a quick sally at a seemingly weak point in the buffalo argument mr orr proceeded to show how can cellation would disrupt the credit sys tem of the world payment is the means for stabilizing exchanges said he presentation proves interesting throughout the presentation tho audience maintained an unusual in terest no doubt due to the fact that the issues of both sides clashed so squarely it was evvident that hobart would have to show decided improve ment in rebuttal to overtake the lead which buffalo bad accumulated through superior speaking and weigh tier argument henry loutlt in rebuttal pertin ently brought up the secret treaties and the intriguing diplomacy of tho continued on pace four (< outliiued on page inn subscribe to the iris
