the bee the greater university of buffalo weekly vol 10 university of buffalo december 6 1929 no 10 two varsity teams ready to face teachers tonight sent material for varsity quintet best in half decade west siders much weakened by loss of graduated stars university of buffalo opens its bas ketball season tonight against state teachers college at the elmwood mu sic hall the game will start promptly at 8:30 p m a good crowd is expected at the opening game of the season especially since the blue and white quintet has a very bright outlook on the court season of 1929 1930 although the west siders have lost the majority of their last year's team several new men have reported to their squad who show plenty of skill they should have a good team and the u of b basketballers will find the teachers ready and willing to put up a strong battle for a victory in previous years results show that the university team has rather quite thoroughly ' trounced the normal school contingent often in fact more than doubling the opponent's points last year the blue and white won by a score of 28-17 a fairly large margin of victory so as far as past scores all-university dance given tonight by football team proceeds of dance to be used to buy sweaters for team a body of students consisting chiefly of the football team has been diligently working during the past few weeks in order to put over the first all-university football dance this affair is being held at the elks ballroom tonight and the various schools are expected to turn out to support this event the ether of the elks ballroom will be filled with the melodious strains of the manhattan band box boys this combination is sure to furnish superb music for the occasion the proceeds of this dance will be used to purchase sweaters for the football team the students are al most duty bound to support this affair inasmuch as the players on this year's victorious football team ought tn receive some sort of acknowledg ment for their services there will be no dancing after the basketball game so bring your hottest flame and make a big night of it bertrand russell addresses faculty at informal tea a delightfully informal tea for the noted philosopher bertrand russell was given by dean macdonald and dean park in the women's lounge wednesday afternoon november 26 members of the faculty and their wives and upperclassmrn who were interested attended it was a rare treat to be allowed to meet such a world-famous man as bertrand rus sell and later to join in the informal discussion of the nursery school which was established for the children of dr russell and some of his friends no school was found to fit bertrand russell's ideas of educational needs he therefore set about making one in his charming clipped english ac cent dr russell talked of the condi tions and developments of the school meanwhile smoking a long black pipe dean macdonald and dean park are to be greatly thanked for bringing to the students the opportunity of con versation with such an interesting fijrure of modern philosophy those who attended the tea will un doubtedly be interested in the fact that bertrand russell in talking to dean park stated that he enjoyed the tea very much and thought the stu dents asked very apt questions members of s a c to meet dec 10 at alumni club the next meeting of the student activities committee will be held on tuesday evening december 10 at the alumni club north street 7:45 o'clock sharp all members are re quested to reserve the date now and be there since there will not be an the women's lounge at hayes hall the first given by dr d m kumro assistant professor of chemistry was the toxicity of lead compounds the second malta fever was delivered by carl 0 lathrop assistant professor of bac teriology at the medical school the previous meeting featured a talk by dr pohlman and was held at the medical school the following officers were elected president dr w j atwell vice-president — willard bernhoft secretary dr g c hicks dr m bodenstein speaks for fenton foundation tonight dr max bodenstein professor of physical chemistry at the university of berlin will deliver a lecture under the auspices of the fenton founda tion university of buffalo at the grosvenor library on friday at 8:15 on the subject chemical ac tions of light the subject will be treated in a non-technical manner he is editor and publisher of the zeitschrift fur physikalische chemie and has been during the present au tumn visiting professor at johns hop kins university princeton univers ity at the dedication of its new chem ical chemistry honored him with the degree of doctor of science no few er than 37 articles by him on physical chemistry are listed by chemical ab stracts dr bodenstein will also speak this afternoon to all interested on chain reactions this meeting is open to all and will be held in room 214 fos ter hall at 3:00 p m all students at all interested are examiners to make critical survey of exam conduction ever since their pristine appear i ance examinations have decimated the ranks of helpless students subjected to their questionings yet the popularity of these predacious forms considering their übiquitous occurrence has necessitated methods of control in order to save humanity from ultimate eradication pharmacy students especially those who plan to match their supposedly acquired knowledge against the phar macy state board examination in or der to aspire to a professional license will no doubt be interested in the humanitarian efforts pharmacy exam iners are advancing for their welfare last week dean gregory helped conduct the state board examination in the columbia school of pharmacy new york city and a delegate from the aforementioned institute capaci tated in buffalo the object of this interchange of examiners was to offer opportunities for a critical survey of examination conduction away from the home center so that each sec tional examiner may profit by the practices of others in buffalo new york and albany these examinations were simultaneously conducted last week and the respective methods of presentation thoroughly observed next year's candidates will profit at least this attempt to secure the best psychological mental set and physical adjustments during examina tion is a big step in a philanthropical way all that is left for the phar mics is to pass the examination — now a mere trifle blackstone society to initiate new members the blackstone legal society has announced that at its next meeting on december 11 the new members will be formally initiated and welcomed into the society all initiates are urged to be present as presentation of shingles will follow the initiation two plays to be presented by blue masquers dec 12 midnight and a shadowy form moves silently and surely across the canton living room sweeping the darkness with a glowing electric torch suddenly from the doorway comes a low-voiced sharp command stop where you are a flood of light reveals the intruder no ordinary burglar this but a figure correctly attired in faultless evening clothes well-groomed and nonchalant in the extreme a gentleman burglar a re vealing conversation with his unwill ing host an unforeseen set of com plications all woven into a witty epigrammatic plot — such is the es sence of prince gabby one of a program of two one-act plays which will be presented by the blue masquers on thursday evening de cember 12th at eight o'clock the second play so aptly named hop o me thumb is a comedy with the most mirth-provoking lines war ranted to arouse in the most phleg matic audience a wave of laughter a french laundry in soho london is the scene of this delightfully amusing play in which little amanda called hop o me thumb because of her diminutive size her mr " orace and a carefully laundered shirt done up in pink tissue paper are features of paramount interest what happens to a romantic little londoner when she sets her heart upon the owner of a well-worn shirt is cleverly told in this short play the brevity of its per formance and the diminutive title are amply made up for by the sparkling wit and delicious turn of the play thus townsend hall it is evident will be the scene of a gala occasion coach biffy lee lauds the mental status of squad the mental precocity of the football team was intimated to members of the u b y club tuesday evening by coach biffy lee who declared that the mental status of the team has peaked itself where it should be one year from this time in that he continued the team has accomplished two years in one the past season has inculcated in the players the at titude and spirit which usually re quires two years anent the initial game for next year in which carnegie tech fur nishes the opposition for the bulls biffy sidetracked the queries as to continued on page 4 column 1 mr seloy speaks at second meeting of chemistry club the second meeting of the chem istry club was held on november 21st in the women's lounge the speaker was mr soley the assistant director of research at the carborundum plant in niagara falls before showing the moving pictures which were to illustrate his talk mr soley made a few interesting intro ductory remarks he said that the discovery of carborundum grew out of the fact that clay plus carbon plus an electric furnace yielded something similar to an artificial diamond the discoverer of this product made about one ounce of silicon carbide the tech nical name for carborundum the first time now the carborundum plant manufactures about fifteen million pounds a month when carborundum was first made it sold for 880 a pound whereas now it brings fifteen cents a pound the film called jewels of indus try proved very interesting as well as instructive following the talk a play good medicine was presented by three members of the club jean mulroy arlene dobmeier and john glosser the usual fitting climax refresh ments was next in order and brought to a close a delightful evening r p miles to give tallow tips at next convocation c robert parker miles one of the most famous lecturers in america will be the speaker at convocation wednesday december 11th he will give his classic tallow dips which has been given in every state of the union every province of canada and every english speaking country in the world the lecture consists of word por traits of some of the internationally famous englishmen and americans of the last century robert miles was , a renowned correspondent of the new york newspapers by whom he was sent to the leading capitals of the world to report on various interna tional situations in the course of these journeys he interviewed and became acquainted with many national leaders his tallow dips constitutes a jewel of american platform almost equally famous to acres of dia monds by dr conwell former presi dent of temple university movement now on to form professional chemical frat there is now a movement on foot to establish a professional chemical fraternity on the campus the nu cleus of this organization will be formed from junior and senior chem
