and student leaders hail benefits of late chancellor's munificence norton union which mr robert parke its di rector calls a milestone in the growth of the influ ence of many organized student activities of the uni versity at large will celebrate its fourth anniversary tonight in the auditorium from 10 until 2 with danc ing and refreshments which will include a gigantic birthday cake bearing four candles i previous anniversary orchestras claire hoffman's monte carlo band tone marlow prominent at many large eastern college dances and han searl's commodores will be followed this year by peck's bad boys — a peppy gathering that sidney mccroskey general chair man of the norton birthday ball says is definitely on its way up chancellor capen who cut the elaborate birthday cakes at the first two anniversaries and dr lemon who cut the cake at the last will pass the traditional cere mony this year over dr julian w park dean of the college of arts and sciences as has been the practice of previ ous years all norton hall facilities including game room billiards pool ping pong cards checkers chess and shuffle board will be open and free to the guests sidney mccroskey has done his best to reach and if possible to climax the traditional standard of norton union anniversaries which mr parke defines as being the height of the program of social events that norton union spon sors speaking of the value of norton union to students mr robert winegar b s bus 34 its first president summed up what he be lieved to be the purposes of the new student union as follows to promote a spirit of fellowship among the students to foster the social phases of university life to co-operate in maintaining the in tellectual ideals of the university to heighten the prestige of the col lege campus within the community and to be responsible for the ad ministration of norton union dr a b lemon one of the main sparkplugs promoting student ac tivities for many years preceedfng orton union said that these objectives are being achieved none can deny but it is a good thing to pause once a year to take in ventory of accomplishments and in spire a new group of leaders with their inaugurate the spring program of social events arranged by norton union the student bridge and ping pong tournaments the reverse dance and moving-up day exer cises are only a few of the events which will furnish diversion for the union members in addition to these there will be a faculty bridge tournament the annual ac tivities dinner the annual art ex hibition and a series of interesting fireside talks cecil pearl will be chairman of the student bridge tournament ralph chapman will have charge of the ping-pong tournament the art exhibition which will include the work of the special ballot judges to select queen from five highest in voting ballots for selection of the 1938 prom queen appear in this week's bee voting will continue until saturday and the choice of the queen from the five highest will be made the night of the prom a nationally famous orchestra leader jack denny leader of the prom orchestra and a popular lo cal maestro will select the queen nominations will be limited to only juniors and seniors the girl chosen as queen will receive a cup from b x e fraternity and ar arm bouquet from the bee in previous years under the method of choosing the queen the leader of the prom orchestra selected several girls from the dan cers at the prom the queen was finally chosen from these last year however the old custom of choosing the nominees by popular ballot was revived the girls nomi nated were june henry virginia whiting evelyn robinson carol seltz mary jane smith dorothy sharpe and grace eddy virginia whiting attractive member of theta chi sorority was the junior girl chosen as queen by rudy vallee carol seltz and mary jane smith were chosen as her at tendants convocation feature lecture on cancer an illustrated lecture about cancer which will poin out the symptoms of the disease will be given at the next weekly convo cation in norton hall auditorium next wednesday morning milder the auspices of the division of cancer control of the state department of health according to louis c kress in structor of surgery in the univer sity medical school this is a timely subject which is getting much publicity at the present time in new york state since cancer knows no age and can be found at any time during life this lec ture with its accompanying illus trative slides should be of espe cial interest to university stu dents bison head to tap members at prom men's honorary society to recognize contri butions to the university selection of male students for membership in bison head junior men's honorary society will take place shortly after midnight on february 25 at the junior prom the proceedings will take place as in former years in the form of a tapping ceremony during the grand march after the tapping all new members will assemble on the platform in the ballroom phil wels med 40 will deliver a speech welcoming and congratulat ing the newly-selected juniors and the prom queen will pin a ribbon on each man bison head was established in the spring of 19*3 to give recogni tion to those men who have en hanced the traditions of the uni versity selections are made not solely on the basis of athletic prow ess nor are they studio all members of both blue and white masquers are eligible to try out for roles law library augmented by sidway collection dean francis shea of the school of law announced today that the library of the school has been im measurably improved and strength ened by the gift of the late frank st john sidway mr sldway left to the school his complete law library consisting of over 1,000 volumes of reports and important texts the books are to be appro priately marked and set up as a memorial collection in the library > of the law school frosh - sophs sponsor dance at a recent meeting of all the sophomore and freshman class of flclers of the schools of pharmacy arts and business administration in the auditorium of norton hall plans for the most spectacular frosh-soph dance ever staged on the campus were discussed officers decided that this dance should embody considerable col lege spirit and endow this spirit throughout buffalo lightweight girls were favored by the commit tee and it was decided that all girls under 110 pounds be given a price reduction of lc per pound below 110 pounds on the purchase price of their tickets walter h willoughby president of the arts sophomore class and announced today for the govern ing board of the university humor magazine by editor harold feld man the bison which will appear on the twenty-second ot this month said feldman will be an other attempt to change the pol icy of our magazine to fill the de sires of the greatest number of studentb the prom issue will contain a new literary department of the type that was so popular a few years ago he
