38 browning was named secretary replacing ivan levine who did not return to college honor membership granted to u.b social work school en tered m american association full membership iv the ameri can association of schools of so cial work was grunted during the summer to the university of buf lulu's school of which dr niles carpenter is dean only 19 other colleges win such recognition und the honor was grunted only after a three year provisionul period this school is now m its eighth year a total enrollment of 197 slu ileilts iv all related courses is tak • v cure of by a lull-time faculty which was held on tuesday september 21 from trinity epis copal church he is survived by his parents henry j and beatrice haskins murphy and by two brothers charles of buffalo and edward of haledon n j coveted honor awarded university phi beta kappa council approves applica tion for chapter it has been definitely announced hut a chapter of phi beta kappa will be established at the univer sity of buffalo m the near future at the triennial council of phi betu kappa m atlanta georgia the application of the university of buffalo was accepted attending the council session was dr julius w pratt head of the university of buffalo's history department dr pratt is v member of the icoal alumni chapter it b has been seeking a chapter of this fraternity which honors high ranking students in the lib erul arts college for several years after an extensive investigation by the committee on qualifications the senate of the fraternity last december invited the university to submit un application the university of buffalo was one of eight institutions of higher education selected out of 2uuu in vestigated irwin b clark memorial gymnasium to fulfill long felt need of university peelle predicts of english during lie past summer the university suffered the loss of one of the outstanding members of its kuglish department when dr robert o seitz died as a result of injuries received m un automobile accident at allentowu pa dr belts who had been an asso ciate professor of english for the past several years was on a leave of absence from the university a native of harrisburg pa he attended the harrisburg acadmey yale und columbia universities from 11*20 to l kit he was an in structor at yale where he received his ph.d degree dr seitz had al so taught in foreign countries in cluding china and had studied abroad thirty-nine years old at the time of his death dr seitz is survived by his wife katherine v seit 2 who was with him ut the time of { the accident and one son chancellor to be honored at dinner alumni association to sponsor banquet the academic year 1987-1988 marks the completion of dr sam uel paul capen's fifteenth year as chancellor of the university of buffalo in celebration of this occasion the general alumni association of the university of buffalo is honor ing dr capen at a testimonial banquet to be held m the hotel statler ballroom on saturday eve ning october 9 ut 7:30 o'clock a speaker of national prominence to he announced shortly will address the gathering the unnual alumni homecoming ball will follow the banquet a decude und one-half ago when capen became chancellor of the university the most fruitful aud progressive period of the univer sity commenced since dr capen assumed office the university hus gradually grown m civic importance and m national ranking the buildings that were standing m 1922 have since then been remodeled or re built many new buildings among them crosby hull norton hull and the lockwood memorial library have changed what once was a bur ren spot into v beautiful campus one that can hold its own with any city college m the united states rhe latest addition is the new ir win b clark memorial gymnasium soap box open letter to norton uulun members the board of managers wel comes you to norton union to be gin another year of activity during the short period of nor ton union's existence the students have participated in student union affairs in increasing numbers the addition of new student or ganizations is encouraging and perhaph the trend will continue attendance at programs presented to our membership by the pro gram committee indicates a healthy interest in union enter tainment lust year about 12,000 people attended apparently a general understanding of the proper relationships between this student union and other campus units has contributed to the ad justment of norton union to its present status this adjustment must continue and must always he susceptible to change to meet stu dent needs the board of managers has undertaken to extend the services of the union to our memberships through more extensive entertain ment than has heretofore been offered the program for construction work begun on clark memorial gymnasium cornerstone ceremonies set for homecoming struc ture to contain large gymnasium basketball courts showers and other conveniences erection of a gymnasium on the u b campus — long the fondest hope and idlest dream of university officials and students is at last being realized 1050 feet behind edmund hayes hall at the base of the campus quadrangle the new irwin b clark memor — lal gymnasium is starting to grow it lias been learned from an au thoritative source that plans are now under way for the cornerstone laying ceremonies to be held us part of the homecoming duy cele bration on october 9 chancellor capeii other administrative offi cials ami student leaders are ex pected to participate m the pro gram a 300,0u0 bequest to the uni versity by mrs evelyn howes clark who died m the spring of 1936 will he the main source of funds with which to finance the tenth building on the tl b cam pus the total cost of the new building will reach 70,7ti15 mrs clark's husband for whom the new gym is named was a well known buffalo seed mrechant be fore his deuth several years ago the structure will contain a large gymnasium two smaller gymnasiums vursity teum room freshmen or visitors team room several large and small locker rooms protected open-air sun deck and exercise court actual construction work on the new building started during july the foumlution has been laid already and work on the first floor is un der way if present plans are car ried out the new gymnasium will be ready for occupation m may or june 1938 local rough limestone trimmed with indiana limestone will be used for the exterior of the build masquers frosh reception successful tryouts to be held mon day tuesday and wed nesday afternoons m norton hall the annual reception for incom ing students interested iv the theatre was held in norton hall's blue room thursday night ut 8 p m.i opening uu intensive season planned by the blue masquers university of buffalo dramatics or ganization in between munches of cake aud sips of tea applicants for member ship m the club beard about the masquer traditions and the exten sive opportunities which the club offers to those interested and train ing and experience m all phases of dramatic production not just actors when asked about the organiza tion members — known affection ately or otherwise as enthusiasm will be on the program the band will add to the festivities with uppropriute music head coach jim peelle line coach fritz febel and frosh coach george vadas will speak and the footbull squud will he introduced to the students rush week set by frat council after battle new alliances formed in opening skirmishes in two stormy sessions which threatened the existence of the in tel-fraternity council a coalition headed by alpha kappa psi and kappa delta succeeded m block ing a one week advancement of the closed rushing period for fra ternities the bitter light was precipitated when william j neil bus ad 38 of beta chi epsilon introduced a motion which would move the clos ed period forward from its original date beginning september 27 to october 11 harold kirscheubuam bus ad 39 of beta sigma rho seconded tlie motion m an effort to open next week for a proposed nterfra ternity stag alphu kappa psi and kappa delta who held an advan tage over the other members of the coullull by virtue of already having their houses opened launch an offensive against bill nell's pro posal they were lent support by kappa nu whose representatives contradicted themselves on suc cessive ballots and kappa psi pharmacy group who are ineligi ble to participate in rushing until mid-semester the kappa psi poli cy is dictated by the school of pharmacy the whole effect of the meeting was to eliminate any hope of an interfraternity stag and served to outstanding personalities dot business frosh students prominent in scholarship and athletics many leaders m high school cur ricular and extra-curricular life are included m the incoming freshman class according to a partial list released by dr shaw livermore assistant dean of the school of business administratoin and fresh man advisor class officers musi cians athletes and leaders m scholarship are represented by the class of 1941 of the 95 or more entering students in the college the following ure deserving of spe cial mention annette schwenk holder of a 100 freshmun competitive scholar ship given by the business admin istration school vice-president und valedictorian of the class of 19 g hutcbtnson.central high school and un accomplished piauist richard mclaughlin scholarship holder graduate of lafayette brother of bob mclaughlin busi ness ad 36 sophs administer primitive justice as court convenes uperclassmen invited to enjoy mass carnage today the most successful frosh court m many v decade passed weighty judgment on the first group of freshmen culprits with bob btran bky m charge the jury consisting of harry jenkins jerry katzmun walter nelson cam benson cecil pearl and duke goldberg handed down decisions tempered by a full sense of the responsibility involv ed the soph enemy no 1 at this court was frosh siegel who will eat off the mantel for days because the first paddle was cracked he answered his summons suffered and ulmost immediately after was hailed up for contempt of court then frosh siegel rendered a choice song from the balcony at norton among the other punishments were the singing of adeline by a quartet of frosh rolling of trousers übove the knees by sev eral others and the placing of gum on the forehead of frosh sennit man for chewing said gum while answering the sunimous as cvi deuce that the court was conduct ed fairly the jurors acquitted all f'rosh who were innocent the next sophmore court will be held friday and all upper classmen are invited the court will be just as interesting as the first for the supply of summons is unlimited as
