the bee university of buffalo volume 17 buffalo n y friday february 12 1937 number 16 annual junior prom tonight prom queen bison head chosen at ball tonight hotel statler les brown colorful gowns furnish setting for traditional affair the day of days has arrlted this evening after several weeks of breathless anticipation on the part of the student body the an nual junior promenade will be held in the main ballroom ot the hotel statler this evening at 10:30 p.m les brown and his duke blue devils will furnish the music les an artist in the field of swing is expected to prove the feature at traction of the evening each new report of the band adds something to the aready tremendous popular ity of this well-known organization many other attractions will be presented among these will be the tapping of the senior men's hon orary society the selection of the prom queen and exceptional fav ors in view of these unusual offer ings and also the fact that through the diligence of the prom committee rudy vallee has agreed to aid in the selection of the prom queen a record crowd is expected to attend reports of the advance sales to the student body and to the pa trons and patronesses further the indication that the attendance will surpass all previous estimates and expectations as in the past the rich traditions of the prom will do much to add to the glamour of the occasion rudy vallee to aid selection of prom queen rudy vallee prom judge well - known orchestra leader to present cup to queen selected dur ing grand march the 1937 junior promenade com mittee requested of rudy vallee that he be present and preside over the prom queen ceremonies they now proudly announce that mr vallee has gratefully accepted this invitation and will be glad to meet the university of buffalo students at their prom mr vallee will act in the capa city of judge with mr taylor and mr arno these judges will make the selection from the following seven nominees the misses vir ginia whiting grace eddy june henry dorothy sharpe evelyn robinson mary jane smith and carol seltz their choice shall be presented with the prom queen loving cup by mr vallee buffalonian pictures schedule next week proofs of senior pictures due before easter possibility that the cost of each person's 1937 bufpalonian will come from his breakage fee still ex ists it was announced today by editor dorothy sharpe dr shaw l.ivurmore is still working on the matter with the treasurer's office activities and sororities and fra ternities have already been con tacted and group pictures will be taken beginning the week after next the complete schedule an nounced by anne eschelman pho tography editor will appear in next week's bee senior pictures will be taken at hens and kelly's cards for ap pointments for senior pictures will be distributed monday with these are activities blanks which must be filled in by each senior final proofs for pictures must be hand ed in before easter so that all pic lur.'s must be taken immediately profs criticise court action approval and disapprov al shown by u b instructors at p r e s i dent's action the president's proposal to en large the supreme court to fifteen members has caused a great stir among the authorities on govern ment and economics some indivi duals are aeverly criticizing his ac tion others say the president has proposed the mobt effective method for removing the obstacles that block the path of his administra tion and progressive government the following are the opinions of professors at the university of buffalo professor horton assistant pro fessor of history i think the president's action is very bad in fact i would call it damnable packing the supreme court will destroy its indepen dence i cannot see a court com posed of presidential benchmen the supreme court has retarded the carrying out of certain policies but if the people really want these policies they can be obtained by amendment i have supported mr 1 . roosevelt to this time but i dis agree entirely with this present policy professor brumbaugh if the president's action is car rled out any group of men who presume to undermine the soiadar ity of their bovernmental refer ences are indeed preparing to cast themselves adrift in a legislative morass without a judicial compass and the results will be the worse fol the american people if the methods of the court have to be changed such change should come at a time when other branches of the government and the nation as a whole are in a condition of relative stability professor fritz machlup — profes sor of economics as a former citizen of a country where democracy was replaced by an autocratic regime i can say that the president's proposal seems very familiar to me we have had similar thing done to our supreme athletic council rejects proposal of conference busy seision held as ap pointments of team managers are an nounced at the last meeting under the old constitution the athletic council held a busy session to clean up all unfinished business be fore the invocation of the new constitution which takes effect at the march meeting the council reiterated its policy of keeping the university free from all outside athletic alliances by rejecting a proposal of mr holmes of wayne university of detroit that the university of buf falo join a big city athletic con ference consisting of wayne and detroit universities case school of cleveland akron college bald win wai lace defiance and hiram the rejection was moved by mr i.'.uckbum burlness manager of athletics and was seconded by dr keene the opinion voiced by the council was to the effect that it could not see its way clear to join ing a conference group of other colleges the council announced the re appointment of les shapiro pbar elections scheduled for s.a.a officers petitions must be filed with dr livermore by february 17 dr shaw llvermoro secretary of the athletic council announced wednesday that petitions nominat ing students or the positions of president and a first and second vice-president of the student ath letic association will hare to be in his hands before 6:00 p.m feb ruary 17 the election of these off cers will be held on february 23 and 24 in hayes and norton halls ' and in classes or class meetings of , the downtown professional schools in accordance with the new con stitution of the student athletic association adopted on january 15 1937 a candidate or any of the three offices must secure a pe tition bearing the names o 40 members o the student body which is 3 per cent of the total membership nominations must be for a specific office all students who hare paid the 1936-37 activi tles fee are members of the asso ciation and are eligible to vote for the three executive officers these elected officers plus eighteen other students named by athletic squads and campus organizations such as the bee the bison block b will form an executive board of the association from this board a delegation of eight will represent the association on the athletic council replacing all present stu dent members on that body the elected president of the associa tion will ex offlcio be among these eight some present student mem bers of the council may by elec tion become executive board members this board will hold of fice only until the end of this aca demic year and in may a new board for 1937-38 will be elected general elections for president and the two vice-presidents will also be held at this time annual alumni dinner to be cabaret style 2 2nd anniversary o f alumni society to be celebrated by formal affair the alumni of the university of buffalo will present follies d alumnl monday evening febru ary 22 norton hall becomes a cab aret for the occasion the event replacing the usual banquet will celebrate the 22nd anniversary of the alumni society the program is scheduled to last from 10 till 2 music will be furnished by cy wills and his collegians and there will ba a floor planning to give all students the opportun ity to personally meet les brown and tbe members of his n b c orchestra arrangements are being made to present them in a strictly informal atmosphere at an open dinner in the cafeteria at norton hall brown and his men are ex pected to arrive about six p m today and will be immediately escorted to norton mr wlllard genricb orchestra chairman will present the distinguished guests to all students who are interested in meeting them the orchestra will have an informal dinner in the main dining hall and all students afe invited to attend the cafeteria will be arranged in such an informal manner as to al low all to join in the conversation all of the musicians are duke uni versity graduates and should prove to be interesting and pleabant they have had huchinaon-central high school university of buffalo faculty member aids police in crime detection dr c merrill brown brings science to aid local law enforcement department the recent slaying in south buf falo of mary ellen babcock has brought widespread notice to the work of cornelius merrill brown associate professor 1 of chemistry at the university or buffalo prof brown has long been recognized as an analytic chemist of oustandlng ability recently he joined with several other professional men in forming a volunteer scientific crime detection bureau tot the buffalo police department the death of miss babcock offer ed prof brown an opportunity to use his abilities in the examination of evidence found at the scene of the crime late sunday night he applied micro-chemistry to the identification of murder clues and since that time much of his ener gies have been spent in making minute examinations of evidence which the average layman might consider useless but which tell a significant story under the micro scope the modern ideas of crime detec tion had their beginnings in the french surat and the english scotland yard in the last few years the united states federal bureau of investigation under di rector john edgar hoover has eclipsed these agencies in its handling of evidence in the most sclentiflc manner so painstaking 1b the examination of evidence now in debate schedule set question to concern minimum wage and maximum hours in in dustry the schedule of the men's de bate team of the university of buftalo for this year was an nounced monday by merrill 0 sees irma arend as head of stu dent publication at a meeting of the bison num held on tuoeday afternoon feb ruary 9th a complete reorganiza tion of the governing board took place this was occasioned by the resignation of doris yeager as edi tor and joan gates as sesretary treasurer miss yeager has been editor of the bison for the past semebter having been elected last spring she regretted having to take this step but the pressure of her school work left no alterna native her duties will be taken over by irma arend who bince the begin ning of the year has been acting as managing editor and who work ed on the staff her entire first year as secretary.treasurer miss arend is a bophmore in the arts college the position of managing editor vacated by her promotion will be filled by evelyn moseley erstwhile humour editor a freshman girl suzanne hutter will take the po sition of secretary-treasurer annual grand march to begin ceremonies chairman and committee to lead traditional proceedings the grand march shall com mence at 12 : 15 from the south west corner of the hall-room miss margaret jobselyn and her escort mr robert sanborn oeneral chair man of the prom will lead the march the membera of the prom committee will immediately follow their chairman mr theodore jac obs door chairman will direct the march with the aid of several of the male members of the commit tee the orchestra will be playing a medley of collegiate songs throughout the entire proceedings the marchers will halt before the stage at the west end of the ball room during the march bisonhead members under the direction of philip wels bisonhead president will tap the junlora who have been selected as eligible to mem bership in the bisonhead honorary fraternity the honorary senior so ciety of the university of buffalo mr sanborn will introduce mr wels and the presentation of the new bisonhead members will be made after these ceremonies mr san born will introduce the three co eds who will have been selected by popular nomination and semi-final elimination thebe three are to be belected from a group of seven nominees the judges mr vallee mr arno and mr taylor will also be introduced these judges will select the finalist and present to her the prom queen loving cup the remaining co.eds will act tn the capacity of maids of honor mr vallee will be in charge of the prom queen ceremonies renault represents athletic association in a general meeting on wednesday in commenting on the club's choice of renault president bob estes suid i am extremely happy women's debate team arranges schedule niagara union cincin n a t i opponents for buffalo team the date season has been inau gurated by university of buffalo btudents when the women's team debated the niagara university team at niagara the question on which univer sity debaters will concentrate throughout the season will be resolved that congress should be empowered to fix minimum wages and maximum hours in in dustry miss irma m arend miss jean schumacher and miss hutter rep resented the university of buffalo in the encounter and debated on the negative side of the question although the schedule has not yet been completed by the wom en's team later home debates have been tentatively arranged as follows miss hutter announced february 20 men's team of le moyne college of memphis ten nessee march 5 men's team of union college of schenectady new york case wrestler gives les brown highest recommendations possible reveals tommy dorsey approved duke blue devils style of rhythm running true to form which is kind of nice bob sanborn sleuth ed around and finally dug up the information that the case school of applied science was located in cleveland no we're not crazy we merely mean that cleveland is in ohio the trianon ball ballroom is in cleveland lee ' brown is in the trianon and we're in-sane nevertheless this choice bit of information was balm to the weary soul of mr sanborn who is no doubt tired of the many various assorted aarcabtlc remarks being passed in his direction what was his genuine bona fide and complete surprise to receive some encour agement in fact we wish to here correct the erroneous report that charlie roebch wab hurled into bob's lap resulting in a partial con cussion and many contusions we assure you that it was the exces sive btimulub to his brain impobed by complimentary remarks that re sulted in his dazed expression and not the aforementioned accident we never though of mr sanborn as an altrulbt but certainly crop ped out in him when he approach ed the sob sister with a personable young man by the name of body in two in order to obtain an inter view regarding les brown and his duke blue devils this charming individual turned out to be non one less than a c
