apparent as argument over orchestra grows by solomon grundy time was when everybody on the campus looked forward for months m eager anticipation to that great and joyous occasion — the junior prom for months we racked our brains figuring out how we could get five dol lars a car a girl a suit — m short as we outgrew the santa claus vision we transferred the same energy into visions of the prom what is the situation now out of this innocent feast of joy has grown a deathly feud where before we beheld the flower of gayety now we witness the thistles of hate and strife why it has come to the point where the entire university is taking sides on the issue as you come into a group the talk lulls into a sinister silence heads get together and everyone speaks m low and meaningful tones finally someone asks are you a breese man or are you for isham jones and then if you find yourself hap pily among friends the talk goes on and you all grow more tense over the controversy if you are so unfortunate as to fall into hostile hands a clammy stillness falls over the group and at last you slink away like a lone wolf with cold shivers running down your spine even the faculty are coming into the dispute just the other day i happened into the cafe teria and found mr horton and mr lindemann going full tilt over lou breese and isham jones the audience was held tense until with a mighty swing mr lindemann banged his fist on the table and sent the cups across the floor one round for breese not only does the thing go into the faculty the advocates of breese and jones have been working on george the campus cop one day they have him rooting for jones and the next time you see him someone else has converted him to a breese man he threatened to arrest me the other day just because i said isham jones couldn't play a chinese fiddle how was i to know he had changed and john oakes goes about the place wearing a gloomy look as though he had lost his best friend why he has received several threatening notes saying it had better be breese or else and why do you suppose how ard scheu trails around after oakes with his right hand al ways m his pocket — just for his health not on your life reputation of affair must be upheld fly janet gibson the junior prom is un questionably the most outstand ing and the most brilliant social affair of the university of buf falo it is eagerly waited for each year and not only by the stu dents themselves it is followed with interest by the whole city of buffalo the university has attained prestige m both her home city and the nation as a whole the junior prom is put on by a committee of the stu dents and it ls they the stu dents who must maintain the high standards which the uni versity holds there has been some dispute over the question of whether a local or national band should be obtained to play at the prom there are arguments to be taken into consideration for both sides but i most sincerely be lieve that a national band is not only preferable but neces sary any high school other insti tution of learning or organiza tion within the city can hire a local band for their various functions it is the common way as they do not have the backing necessary to support a well known national band nor are they giving a dance to which the eyes of all buffalo arc turn ed shall we then under these conditions present a local orchestra at our prom which no matter how good it may be can be obtained by any organ ization m the city thus reduc ing our status to the common place decidedly not the financial question is of course a big problem five dol lars has been the traditional price for a ticket and so we must consider the various groups who will support the prom first there are the students of the various colleges within the university the majority of whom reside m buffalo they can hear a local orchestra at any time the buffalo offers lou breese as well as other at tractions for fifty cents and what students will pay five dol lars for an evening of dancing j to the strains of a band they can hear m a local show for | the price of four bits only i fools the alumni too attend this dance and look forward to it as the gala affair a remembrance i of their student days they ex pect a glamorous ball not just ' a dance with a local band we j need their support but we can't get it if we do not offer them i something superior m the line of bands music to which they can not listen any day of the week thirdly there are the other colleges m the city and the prep schools as well who look for ward to the junior prom of the university of buffalo as an event they would not miss we want to show them again this year what a glorious affair the freddy hart orchestra engaged to play at soph frosh dance sophs and frosh to bury it is a regretable incident but one totally outside of the powers ol the dance committee deadly feud replaces joy in prom situation hate and strife apparent as argument over orchestra grows by solomon grundy time was when everybody on the campus looked forward for months m eager anticipation to that great and joyous occasion — the junior prom for months we racked our brains figuring out how we could get five dol lars a car a girl a suit — m short as we outgrew the santa claus vision we transferred the same energy into visions of the prom what is the situation now out of this innocent feast of joy has grown a deathly feud where before we beheld the flower of gayety now we witness the thistles of hate and strife why it has come to the point where the entire university is taking sides on the issue as you come into a group the talk lulls into a sinister silence heads get together and everyone speaks m low and meaningful tones finally someone asks are you a breese man or are you for isham jones and then if you find yourself hap pily among friends the talk goes on and you all grow more tense over the controversy if you are so unfortunate as to fall into hostile hands a clammy stillness falls over the group and at last you slink away like a lone wolf with cold shivers running down your spine even the faculty are coming into the dispute just the other day i happened into the cafe teria and found mr horton and mr lindemann going full tilt over lou breese and isham jones the audience was held tense until with a mighty swing mr lindemann banged his fist on the table and sent the cups across the floor one round for breese not only does the thing go into the faculty the advocates of breese and jones have been working on george the campus cop one day they have him rooting for jones and the next time you see him someone else has converted him to a breese man he threatened to arrest me the other day just because i said isham jones couldn't play a chinese fiddle how was i to know he had changed and john oakes goes about the place wearing a gloomy look as though he had lost his best friend why he has received several threatening notes saying it had better be breese or else and why do you suppose how ard scheu trails around after oakes with his right hand al ways m his pocket — just for his health not on your life — john needs a body guard these days well so it goes prom is un questionably the most outstand ing and the most brilliant social affair of the university of buf falo it is eagerly waited for each year and not only by the stu dents themselves it is followed with interest by the whole city of buffalo the university has attained prestige m both her home city and the nation as a whole the junior prom is put on by a committee of the stu dents and it ls they the stu dents who must maintain the high standards which the uni versity holds there has been some dispute over the question of whether a local or national band should be obtained to play at the prom there are arguments to be taken into consideration for both sides but i most sincerely be lieve that a national band is not only preferable but neces sary any high school other insti tution of learning or organiza tion within the city can hire a local band for their various functions it is the common way as they do not have the backing necessary to support a well known national band nor are they giving a dance to which the eyes of all buffalo arc turn ed shall we then under these conditions present a local orchestra at our prom which no matter how good it may be can be obtained by any organ ization m the city thus reduc ing our status to the common place decidedly not the financial question is of course a big problem five dol lars has been the traditional price for a ticket and so we must consider the various groups who will support the prom first there are the students of the various colleges within the university the majority of whom reside m buffalo they can hear a local orchestra at any time the buffalo offers lou breese as well as other at tractions for fifty cents and what students will pay five dol lars for an evening of dancing j to the strains of a band they can hear m a local show for the price of four bits only i fools the alumni too attend this dance and look forward to it as the gala affair a remembrance i of their student days they ex pect a glamorous ball not just ' a dance with a local band we j need their support but we can't get it if we do not offer them i something superior m the line of bands music to which they can not listen any day of the
