arranged by senior committee many social activities to round out senior week the following program for senior week has been formulat ed and is being presented by the senior week committee wjl litm seniors in norton hayes crosby fos ter halls during the entire day j you're a traitor to the senior cause if you don't purchase and wear a rose especially when j they're only 10 cents a blossom 1 say tonight ' and tomorrow broken dishes is going to be a good show not long ago . helen hayes one of the roie 1 ] most actresses of the american j i stage and screen defined good j acting as working hard the | ; blue masquers have as usual been working hard the cast his been rehearsing until midnight . every night for some time the , work shop gang has moved into the workshop the place ls strewn with bunks and coffee pots the props committee is scurrying hither and yon looking for all manner of queer things in fact they're so zealous thai they've taken to acting and speaking strangely tuesday two masquers went into the home of another masquer in the absence of the entire family they were busily engaged dragging a car pet down from the attic when they were startled to hear some one coming ln oreat was their relief to discover that it was the masquer member of the family two others scared the mother of !. masquer nearly to death the other day when they drove up in the university truck and an nounced we have come to take the furniture all of this ac tivity has been the hard work essential to a successful produc tion the masquers have put a lot of time energy and money into this show it ls a departure from the type of play which the club has been putting on the last years but lt ls bound to be amusing mr day is so funny that the cast hasn't been able to stop laughing at rehearsals and then there's that squirrely freshman jack nelson if he can't make you laugh we'll re serve you a pew at the marble orchard and you'll get so msd at betty townsend that you'll hate her to pieces at first but before it's all over you're going to feel pretty sorry for her but wait till you see norma lee has she got glamor we're telling you her ravishing costumes are too too divine and so it goes the whole cast is swell so come and laugh and don't care if you roll in the aisles you will un less you're deaf dumb blind or dead mary klein named moving-up queen by three judges at the final judgment for tlie may queen which was held wednesday morning in norton hall mary klein was chosen by the committee of three judges to the position the judges of the contest were mr wilcox of the albright school of fine arts mr lou breese director of the shea's buffalo orchestra and mr leo i flack stage manager of the j shea's theatres in buffalo j the four contestants maiy j klein peggy josselyn marie keller and marie orlnnelser were interviewed by the judges individually and as a group the selection was made on the basis of personality and beauty the may queen will select her two attendants and will lead the moving up day parade whicn will be held saturday may 5 the cup will be presented to the may queen at the senior ball on may 4th new sac holds annual banquet on friday evening may 11 at six thirty the annual banquet of the student activities commt tee will be held in norton ha;l with the opening of norton hall a new system of student govern ment was instituted therefore the committee has practically ceased to function all the form er members as well as the pres ent members are invited to at tend this dinner was arranged in order to honor the members r.f t he committee in 1903 the com mittee was organized and it functioned for only three years then for some time there wa-s moving uo day activities climaxed by sixth annual übessa follies coming again this year as a climax to movingup day activi ties the sixth annual edition of the übessa follies will be pre sented ln the ballroom of the hotel statler saturday evening may 5 featuring a dancing chorus of 16 men and women and a fash ion parade of nine beautiful girls against a background of ostrich feather fans as well as many specialty numbers early reports indicate that this will be the best show in several years in response to many crltl cisms of the short time for dancing at last year's follies the length of the floor show has been cut down to about 12 num bers and will not run over an hour dancing to the music of the b b c commodores di rected by herbert straub will precede and follow the acts supper will be served at mid night and will consist of a full course turkey dinner some of the specialty acts that will appear in the enter tainment are leonard lohr and stanley levy that inimit able piano team in a selection of their own arrangement a song and dance act by a charm ing young lady jean radde who has appeared professionally in several of the city's night clubs virginia lewis and a brother and sister team playing several numbers on a large xylophone a ridiculously funny number will be given by a chorus of eight students to be campaigned in joint charities drive the joint charities u b campaign for students will be carried on during the period of april 27 to may bth although the need ls greater than in pre vious years we will continue the practice of giving each stud ent an opportunity to contribute but no pressure will be brought to bear on those who are unable to do so a number of persons have confused the relief work of the city state and nation with that of the joint charities these two are quite different of the some thirty-four ln the joint charities group all but two use the funds alloted to them to render some valuable and at the present time indispensible ser vice to the community the community can little afford to let these organizations down here at the university the chancellor has again consented to act as major of division f the captain of the university team is prof shaw livermore faculty chairmen are med school dean edward w koch dent school dr c w pankow pharmacy dr a b lemon law dean c c alden arts and science mr t j moran bu ad mr homer w widener education dr a n jorgensen evening session miss irma ger ber this year the quota ls 5100 as compared with 6000 last year the student body of the arts college ls being solicited by a group of students composed of 16 seniors 15 juniors 18 sopho mores and about 27 freshmen the students are being de pended upon to do their very best to help ln the joint chari ties campaign let's all do our par john oakes elected editor of the bison john oakes was elected editor of the bison at a meeting of toe publications board which was held last sunday at the home j of dr scofield retiring advisor to the board at the same meeting charles penfold was elected managing editor of next year's bison it was announced that dr bonner has been appointed by chancellor capen to the position of advisor to the publications board marjorle johnson editor of the bee was elected secretary of the board moving up day activities will end with big parade moving up day dance will be held may 4th this year there will be no i senior ball as such instead the senior class ls conducting the moving-up day dance as the most fitting climax of the years of university life on friday night may fourth the seniors . formally make their farewell gesture this ln an occasion that should have deep significance for everyone who feels the re awakening spirit of u b it is symbolic of progress and opti mism the dance of course is being run to make a profit however this year the university as a j whole will realize the fruits of its spirit in the form of a gift from the senior class everything possible is being ! done to make this affair the , best of its kind ever given spring weather — a country club — a nice drive — smoo'h music and good company — you'll want to be there there are still a limited num ber of positions as ticket sellers for the senior moving-up day buffalo will remember for a long time upson elected glee club head hollia upson arts college sophomore from batavia n y was elected manager of the men's glee club in the elections held on their trip to dunkirk last monday the club also held concerts in angola and frcdonia high schools during the day the evening concert was held in the westminster presbyterian church in dunkirk the men were led by ralph weegar in the absence of mr ward the professional coach who did not accompany the club it would b ridiculous to say ' that the trip was all work and ' no play and should you not be lieve it ask john remington about the girl whom he called using the name of ray cook when ray sang his solo at the evening concert which the sweet i young thing had promised to at : tend he was surprised to see some beautiful girls ln the front row go into ecstasies over his rendition of a perfect day at the conclusion of a rather hectic ' day the club had a little party i at the hotel francis after the evening concert and there are leading lady miss betty townsend betty townsend has the lead ing feminine part in the blue masquers forthcoming produc tion of broken dishes she plays the part of jenny the overbearing wife and mother it is not an easy part nor is it a ! sympathetic one yet betty has i made the part live she will ; make you forget that you ever j ate lunch with her in the cate i teria or sat next to her ln clftu she will make you laugh and weep hate her and pity her she trat!f created a character i she has overcome the difficul ty of playing opposite a more ex j perienced and more mature ac tor she plays with mr day in a ] way which builds up her ch acterization and enhances his this is our way of saying thr.t betty is good in fact very good i this ls betty's first leading role unfortunately it will be her last for the masquers but her name will be added to the masquers , whose work brought honor to courtesy huffntti evening news students requested to keep off grass the annual spring request made to the university students by chancellor leupold is again being made please don't walk on the grass mr leupold thinks that the appeal made to the student body of yale by dean clarence men 1 dell in the yale news is espe cially appioprlate at this time that was for the next two : weeks gentlemen will and others must keep off the campus grass if we are to have any recovery this spring the roots must have a chance now it is hoped that the students will please use the walks it is pleasant to think that no matter how much of a hurry you are in no more than two minutes time can be gained by cutting across the campus rather than follow ing the walks i state teachers college awarded cup for girls glee club contest buffalo state teachers college was awarded the cup for obtain ing the most perfect score at the western new york intercol legiate girls glee club contest which was held at norton hall last wednesday night rocehste placed second scarcely one point behind state teachers the visiting glee clubs were entertained at dinner in the norton cafeteria before the con test and there was a formal dance after the contest as the university of buffalo club was about to gc on the stage to sing their contest num ber the lights went out the three clubs led the audience in singing the songs included the i three alma maters drink to me only old spinning wheei and several others including the man on the flying trap l cze this group singing was one , of the high lights of the evening miss spier of state teachers | should be congratulated upon tier wonderful coaching ability i the university of buffalo girls and especially the boys regret i ted that the rochester girls had to leave the dance and go horn . it is hoped that we will have the i pleasure of entertaining them | again in the near future miss deters returns from convention miss emma e deters univer sity registrar has returned from attending the twenty-second na tional convention of the amer ican association of collegiate registrars ln cincinnati where she was elected treasurer of the association for the year 1934-35 acquaintance day program set for thursday may 3 van bibber honored by two fraternities program will include < supper soeeches by faculty members the program lor acquaint ance day has been enlarged to include the most enthusiastic demands of everyone in response to the suggestion of freshman groups the neces sary funds for the new program are being sought from the stud ent and campus organizations the full list of contributors will be printed ln next gaucher college baltimore mil the baccalaureate exercises will take place sunday june j 10th at 4:00 p m in the audi torium of edmund hayes hall i baker explains radio ads to commerce club mr roger baker well-known , r.nnouncer on the buffalo broad casting corporation's staff gave a very interesting description of j the commercial phases of his work during th e comment club's last meeting held tues ! day afternoon in norton hall prefacing his talk with a his lory of radio broadcasting mr baker described the rapid devel opment up to about 1930 when the peak of demand was reached lin a seller's market at this tage the broadcasting compan ies held the whip hand practi cally dictating the length of so called credit lines 01 advertis ing blurbs which they wou.d allow to be interspersed with the enjoyable part of the pro ■gram i at the start of the general 1 business recession however as i more and more lucrative ac counts were lost control of the market passed into the hand of the buyers since the buyers of radio time are mainly adver tlsing agencies controlling 1 number of accounts they were in a position to drive hard bar gains instead of the broadcasting companies allowing a minimum of advertising talk the situation was exactly reversed ; the ad vertising agencies by threaten ing to cancel their contract could insist on the inclusion oi lust as much sales talk as lh public would stand of course just as soon a business improves to the extent that broadcasters have more de mands for time on tho air than j they are able to supply they 1 will again be in the driver's
