the bee the greater university of buffalo weekly vol 10 university of buffalo october 18 1929 no 4 university plays important part in civic life future graduates to play important role in civic life expansion necessary for more and better leaders eighty-seven per cent of the den tists in buffalo are graduates of the university of buffalo fifty-seven per cent of all the lawyers in buffalo arc also graduates of u b when one adds to these definite contribu tions to the professional life of buf falo the cultural development which the university has contributed to the city during its 83 years of existence it is quite evident what an important role it plays in the city of the city whatever the university may have been in the past is destined to be far surpassed in the future that the young men and women that are grad uated from this institution will play a leading part in the future life is certainly obvious buffalo is one of the great inland ports in the world its diversity of manufactures means of transporta tion and vast power resources prove that the future has immense possi bilities in store for it what the city needs is the trained minds of experts and leaders to realize what assets it possesses and to visualize the future with bold imagination these future captains of industry arc what the university is developing it is pre paring men to carry the burdens of the future the city also needs leaders in other fields it needs doctors lawyers so cial reformers and men with a com prehensive understanding of the world and its progress in order to realize the dreams of a greater city of buffalo the raw material to fill these positions is now entering the university to train them is its task and in its accomplishment it must have the loyal backing of the citizens of today endowment insufficient for number of students the endowment of a university can only be fairly compared with that of other institutions by reducing it to the amount available for each stu rlent's instruction in 1027 the uni versity of buffalo with an enrollment of 2,844 students had an average per student of 1,131 this figure was obtained from an endowment of 3,215,3g7 and is less than half the amount available at any similar university the exceptionally large endowments of some universi ties are necessitated by their resi dential facilities university of buf falo students usually live at home and the expense of erecting dormitories is therefore saved university deficit cited in spite of this there is a certain minimum of income required below which a deficit is inevitable the uni versity's deficit is quite healthy and teadily growing the money so well spent on buildings and equipment is not only non-productive but makes additional money for upkeep neces sary at the same time more stu dents are attracted and these must be provided for princeton president expresses hope for success of campaign campaign ciininiilli e niv raitu of llufftilo buffalo n y i am very much interested in your campaign to increase the endowment '■; the university of buffalo i hope ii you will be abundantly success tl m i/our efforts the labors of « imncellor capen have contributed '"<"•' valuably to the general came of wcatton in this country i feel that " ' niversity deserves the confidenci wo support of the citizens of new > fl stale john gbier hibben tresideni princeton university credit given to evening session work for degrees the evening session of the uni versity of buffalo plays a very defin ite part in the industrial and profes sional life of the city of buffalo it is rather an amazing fact that two hundred and ninety-four firms in buf falo have their workers attending the evening session teachers in the public schools of the city are actively engaged in the extension work which is carried on and many pupils of the university itself will be found en rolled in its classes the curriculum of the evening ses sion includes courses in arts and sciences in business administration in engineering and in journalism courses lead to regular university degrees and diplomas included on its faculty are many members of the day session faculty and prominent professional and business people of buffalo students therefore are in a position to benefit from contact both with the trained investigator and scholar and with the man of affairs during the six years that the eve ning session has been in operation more than 6,000 different persons have been enrolled in its classes or courses though most of these have come from suburbs and surrounding cities during this period approxi mately 125 persons have completed their work for bachelor's degrees by the help of evening classes and some have obtained diplomas solely through evening classes clarence s marsh is dean of the evening session with earl j mc grath assistant dean administration demands aid although the school of business administration is the youngest col lege of the university of buffalo it '. is also the most rapidly growing funds are needed at once to meet this remarkable growth in li)28 the en rollment of the business college in creased ten fold now something must be done to house this thriving school east hall the last of the county buildings is available for immediate remodelling in such a way as to pro vide adequate facilities for the busi ness administration school recent ly this college has been changed from a two-year to a four-year course it is therefore necessary to increase the number of faculty members in order that this broadened aim of training for those choosing a business career may be realized everyone who possesses insight in to public affairs will see at once the vital importance of the part played by the school of business administra tion in the city of buffalo for many long years the university has bent out into the community well-trained lawyers doctors dentists teachers and other people of culture it is only natural that to these should be added the leaders of business in the city those who have studied industrial af fairs encourage the highest training for individuals entering upon business careers such training is supplied by the business administration college which provides a broad college course thus treating business as an occupa tion requiring just as serious prepar ation as do the professions the pros perity of buffalo and the welfare of her citizens depend upon the man i agement of business affairs in an ef i relent manner i thus the provision of adequate < housing facilities faculty members i and equipment for the school of bus i ness administration is an investment ' which will amply repay those who < contribute to it i the final aim in every modern community youth challenges age what kind of a city the older men and women who have succeeded in securing wealth or gain ing wisdom turn over to their chil dren depends entirely upon what opportunities and advantages they set before them as citizens of a grow ing and materially prosperous city we have it in our power to bestow or withhold the means of human ad vancement to build a university is a task which enlists the energies and faith of one generation after another it can never be completed and it can never fail it will always inspire the innate generosity of men and women with that hazard and hope of adven ture which lies deep and unconquered i nthe hearts of all lovers of life it will always tempt devoted men to give themselves or their possessions in in order that others may build cities of enduring beauty and wise govern ment where men and women will delight to work and live phiup becker goetz senior wins local atwater kent audition john l priebe a senior in the col lege of arts and science recently won first place in the buffalo atwater kent national radio audition mr priebe sang against eight of the most talented singers in buffalo and it greatly resounds to his credit that he won over them today he will enter the sectional contests which will be held over willi at 3:30 civic leaders members of university council the council of the university of buffalo consists of thirty-six members with the chancellor the mayor of the . city and the six departmental deans members ex-officio among these thirty-six men are many of the leaders in industrial and cultural life of buf ; falo the very fact that such promi • nent citizens are willing to serve the ' university indicates its important position in the civic life the council is composed of the fol lowing men and women edward j barcalo oliver j ca bana jr jacob g joseph william h i crosby and the chancellor of the | v university members cx-officio c lack of endowment is the cause of higher tuition universities are not as fortunate as other corporations because their prod uct professional and cultural train ing is without a direct market value instead they obtain their income from two sources returns from invested securities and the fees paid by stu dents there must be a balance be tween the two and where one is low the other is invariably high the tuition fees of the university of buffalo have risen steadily until the arts college a representative school has a rate of 350 these fees pay 70 of the income of the uni versity which spends over a million dollars a year for education only two other institutions in the east have a higher rate while the vast majority charge much less designed primarily to receive and educate everyone of ability who de sires admission he university finds itself in the unfortunate position of excluding students on financial grounds a highly undesirable thing to do because the ability to pay does not mean the ability to learn the in creased enrollment offers further em barrassment because the loss on each student is multiplied obviously the balance must be made more nearly equal if the city is to be truly served dean park will speak at state convocation dean julian park will represent the university of buffalo at the sixty fifth convocation of the colleges and universities of the state of new york which begins thursday octo ber 17 102 the first event on the program of the convocation will be a round table discussion of ways ami means of improving the present meth ods obtaining in colleges and univers ities to be held at 0:00 a m i lean park's topic will be suggestions for improving the college curriculum with special reference to survey courses for freshmen ramsay macdonald extends best wishes to university ramsay macdonald prime minis ter of great britain extended his best wishes to the university of buf falo during an interview by the bee while he was in buffalo last monday october 14 the prime minister stated that he considered higher education one of the best instruments in the promition of a better understanding between the nations of the world and the insur ance of an everlasting peace he evinced keen interest in the activities of the university of buffalo along this line and wished her the best of success in her future efforts successful campaign assures u of b expansion for eighty-three years the univers ity of buffalo has carried on its great work of education keeping pace with - the rapidly growing community which ' is its home despite adverse condi ; tions which might well have overcome . an institution of less strength it has maintained a degree of efficiency so high that today the university's name 5 hears no little prestige that the uni ', versity has rendered service of such ■admirable calibre thus far is a phe nomenon which may be attributed to the loyalty devotion and unflagging zeal of its founders its faculty and its friends surely this splendid record must i continue bringing future glory both to the city of buffalo and to its lead ers as well it is for this purpose for the purpose of maintaining and surpassing its record of service that i the endowment campaign of the uni versity of buffalo is about to begin a survey of the urgent needs of the university shows clearly how much depends upon the success of the ap proaching campaign new heating plant needed it is essential to the welfare of the university that the present heating system which is both expensive and inadequate be replaced by one more suitable a central plant designed to heat all the buildings on the campus would answer this need of equal im portance is the lack of a properly equipped gymnasium to take care of the physical education of the students since the good health of an individual is of primary concern such a gym nasium and additional grounds for outdoor sports should be provided it has been well said that fine physical health is nothing less than a life in surance policy in which the commun ity should have direct interest and responsibility medical and dental expansion other projects which must be fi nanced by the endowment campaign include the expansion of the medical and dental schools the school of medicine which is furnishing in large measure two years of medical study to students enrolled in the school of dentistry must be enlarged bring ing medicine and dentistry together in such a way is an extremely costly
