the bee the largest college newspaper in western new york no 18 volume 14 university of buffalo february 23 1934 norton union is to open next monday afternoon the opening program is to be three-day celebration activities to get quarters in union theatre read y for masquers the keys which the norton fam ily will present to the university on the dedication day of norton hall will open chapters in university life which long have existed only in the dreams of entering students and in ambitious plans of organized ac tivities mr robert parke director of norton union activities at home for the present in hayes 109 genially allowed the bee reporter a glimpse at the pages which soin will be the record of actual happenings in nor ton union from the luxurious appearing lobby of norton union to the faculty lounge on the third floor the build ing has been designed to encourage and to fit in with the activities of the university's inhabitants clubs can plan their card parties teas and social affairs on the norton union calendar henceforth rather than on tre closely-filled dean's calendar where so manfy pressing demands have been made in the past for the students one lounge and kitchen the new building is an ideal ath letic club we discover with much enthusiasm the game rooms one of the finest features of the union we comparable to those of the best of athletic clubs according to ru mor not even hand-ball and squash courts are beyond hope should rumor materialize we have mr parke's word that the girls may in vade the sanctum at a given word among the requests of an ath letic nature was one from both stu dents and faculty for arifle-range vision a nationally famous u of b rifle team quite possible to start with almost no outlay of moneyl norton union has even more repre sentative facilities for non-athletic activities the auditorium will be demanded principally it is expects ed by the gle clubs and blue mas quers the physics department has placed its stamp of approval on the acoustics of the auditorium and blue masquers will find that every feature has been particularly de signed to facilitate stage produc tions moreover almost the entire south wing basement will be turned over to the blue masquers for a work room the bee hive in the future may be found in a suite of adjoining rooms on the second floor of the union the other publications the glee clubs and debate teams are among the organizations to find a home in norton union one of the newest applications made has been for a camera room alumni and the faculty are elig ible to join the student union on the same basis as students the faculty already have a lounge where union president 808 winegar union president makes statement we accept norton union as physical proof of student activities having a definite place in the four year curricla at the university — j robert winegar chairs lounges moved into new student union after chasing the master mind chancellor liophole all over the campus for two weeks we finally gave it up and asked al moll to give us the low down on how the norton union furniture is going to get into norton union contrary to public opinion they ae not mov ing the stuff over there on roller deed they ae using the sjchool truck — a novel idea to say the least we'll bet you thought the gents were just out riding around in the joy wagon they are really work ing all the funiture was stored in the basement of croßby hall when it was delivered after it had been there a while and al had had a chance to bit in all the chairs they decided that it might look better for the stuff to be in nortin union — for that was the idea they bad in mind when thejr bought it so they went into conference and finally made up their mind to use the truck 4you know — that big green job so they took the window out of the basement window of crosby and shoved the chairs out into the norton union floor plans designed for beauty use everyone has been anxiioudly awaiting news of the arrangement of norton hall at last the blue print are ready and we taken opportunity of discribing them the entering from main street the reception hall in the center at the left of this is the director's office at the right is the women's coat room post erior to the reception hall 1b the general lounge to the laft of which is the men's lounge on the right the womenls loflinge s istituated the extreme left is occupied by tre cafeteria while the extreme right accommodates the convocation hall and stage the chairs in the hall are removable so that it can be used for a dance hall when necessary the secondfloor vlis as follows ex treme left upper cafeteria back of wrich are the private dining 1 coma in the center front is the men's game room back of this is the balcony overlooking the foyer and the writing room left of the writ ing roomoff ffces of buffalonian and the bison right of the writ ing room bee offices to the left of the mem's game room situated between that and the cafeteria is he faculty lounge to the right of the game room next to upper con vocation hall is the women's game room at the extreme right up per convocation hall balcony and upper stage third floor in the continued on page 8 column 7 the tulane hullabaloo is spon soring a debate as to whether it would be best to have free love and nickel beer or free beer and nickel love it's cheap at any price boys an examination at the university of mississippi asked for the princi ple parts of any latin verb upon one paper was written shppeo slip pere falli bumptus the returned paper had these words falio failure flunctum buppendum norton union is tastefully decorated the student body is due for a surprise and a thrill monday the twenty-sixth the opening of nor ton will give the cynics and pess imists an opportunity to forget their dreariness in the brilliance of the new recreation center it would take a professional interior decorator to describe the building justly but if enthusiasm helps here goes the foyer is pale green has a large fireplace to be know as the norton fireplace and a stairwsry that begins at the left continues across the back and reaches the second story on the opposite side from its beginning there is some thing about the atmosphere of the place that is not the least bit con ducive to hard work but instead causes the most pleasant sensation of relaxation to pervade the mind and anatomy the lounges with there respective feminine and mas culine mantels and furnishings help the sensation beautifully then the game room on the second floor seems to have excellent possibilities of sup erceding the iron room and the en gineer's room in the heart of the bridge enthusiasts the tables are sturdy pedestaled ones and hand some spindle-legged red-leather-top ped ones not a few individuals will find the writing room conducive to their terapermental outbursts of genius the faculty too will find recreation in norton hall a pleas ant matter inview of the super lounge for their comfort comfort doesn't mean that there will not be activity activities have been assigned offices there is space on the top floor in the basement perhaps to be used for such things as rifle range hand-ball or wrest ling and the auditorium should have varied performances within its high walls the lighting fixtures in the build ing are more than attractive they have been selected effectively with an eye for the beauty of the result and the energy so expended was not in vain especially in the dining hall are the chandeliers outstanding dining hall was the word the place has been termed cafeteria for so long that the universal conception is a long white table-topped arrange ment wherein bean soup or some such undesirable mixture would be sipped as a matter of fact the cafeteria part or the serving table is separated from the room proper b!y a partition the only effect that reaches the eye upon entrance is a series of mahogany tables little square ones that destroy im mediately the impression of cafe teria the choicest spot of them all is the private dining rooms between the first and second floors they are beautifully furnished even to red leather-seated chairs that look and are comfortable one of the rooms contains a mural the origi nal for which is in the historical building it is the old eagle tavern once sit uated where adam meldrum and anderson's now is that is the point from which the stage coaches used to start down the old mud roa d to albany in the days when buffalo was the metropolis a course in decoration and a voca bulary the size of webster's would be required to give an accurate ac count of detail and impression you'll see it yourself in less than a week here's to happy hours chancellor capen praises norton sees infinite possibilities for future of college in doctor norton's gift one thing is clear said chan cellor capen in an interview grant ed the bee this week norton un ion supplies us with an instument we have lacked for so long one of the most important things we have lacked it will be an agency for focusing student life on the campus in every kind of student activity we all hope that it will be more than a recreation center for some of the geatest things we get out of university experience is to charm the graces of life and to have social experience outside the ordinary range of home life " i have liked particularly the way the students have taken hold of the project they have develop ed an admirable scheme of admin istration remarked dr capen we are never sure however until such a project is under operation how it wall turn out this one promises well and so far comes up to our expectations i have confi dcjice that it will jconjtinue t!iat way there are no doubts in the mind of anyone that the intention of the council and administrative offices that the students shall have the larger part of the responsibility of operating the building i*d super vising the activities centered there i have a feeling that an institu tion like norton union has a much greater chance to be a very vital in fluence in the lives of students in an institution like this than in a college located in a country village or small town where the students have dormitory or fraternity resi dence > stated ', the chancellor here they do not compete in a few institutions tiho student un ions have n-.t brought the students together in an effective fashion here having no competition it seems inevitable that the students should make this the place of resort for all things to be done together it is of course up to the board of managers to make rules and reg ulations ' for norton union and tc see that they arc lived up to the student body as a whole has ex pressed its admiration for the orig inality that hsa been put into the plans for this undertaking whenever new things are start ed explained dr capen no matter how carefully they were planned in advance they are bound to deviate sightly from the original plan it is hard to tell in advance what wpll be the most important thing taking place and conse quently one is always in doubt as to what phase of the program should be emphasized i think he remarked in con clusion that the plans for the opening of the student union are | very promising seniors march 4th deadline for your pictures the final date for senior pictures has been set for march 4 if you have nol had your picture taken yet you can do so by going down to ben swan 637 main street across from shea's buffalo the two dollars which must be paid at the time of the bitting may be applied to any amount of extra pictures over six providing the cheaper grade of pho tographs is not chosen remember march 4th is the deadline stunt night to inaugurate norton union the student mixer and stunt night will take place on the first evening of the opening program of norton union monday fefruary 26 there will be a vaudeville program food and dancing every one who has a stuntis guirding his secret jealously so we don't know what is going to happen but we've heard rumors they say that the glee club has an act that is quite different from its usual programs peiple are trlnnfing around looking for more words for frankie and johnnie so draw your conclusions and where there's frankie and johnnie there's bound to be fun but you ain't heard nothin yet and neither have we but we do know that there's going to be some fun and don't forget that there will be food and dr — no no we mean dancing so park your inhibitions and cime on along campus clubs find fine homes in new union what will norton union mean to the organizations on campus first we will play the funeral march for the s a c as was the new boad of managers will re place the old organization taking over all its activities a new s a c will be organized having re presentatives from the minor as well as the major campus clubs as yet nothing has been done about this to the less important organiza tions which will not have room in the union norton union promises better meetings more exciting par ties and a perfect place to hold them . the new theme song adop ted by the friars is let's have a party the glee clubs will have rooms in the new building they will hold the home concert in norton union with a possibiity of making more money glee club practice will also be held in norton the blue masquers will find it much easier to put on productions in the new auditorium they will not be limited to one act plays and the scenery will be moved off stage at the rear instead of over the front of the stage in view of the audi ence the women's club will hold their luncheons in the new building and hopes that the union will promote better spirit among the girls they hope that the girls from pharmacy school will have a better chance to come in contact with the girlß from arts college the buffalo bee will have new offices second floor rear and hope that a telephone will be installed in the new quarters the new offices will be larger and bet ter equipped and the staff is plan ning bigger and better issues the bison and the buffalonian will also have new offices in nor ton union with hopes flying high there is no reason why the new building should not be the means of making university of buffalo into an ideal institution students in english classes tet oklahoma a and m college are fined one cent every time they mis spell represent the reaction of mr robert parke to his new positfon as directdr of norton union this is his expression of the significance of the opening of the student union building this is his message to the members of the un ion what it means to the members individually and to the school as a whole a a a most students i believe have as yet had no opportuity to visit nor ton union the opening on mon day will be a revelaion to nearly everyone and i suggest that you draw the attention of all university people to the fact that they will begin the use of one of the finest btudent unions in the united states as i see the situation every ef fort hag been tvpended to erect and equip a building that is at once beautiful and practical and com plete in every detail you can judge for yourself how nearly the administration has carricki out in spirit as well as in letter the be quest of chancellor norton members of norton union may expect to begin immediate use of the building and the intense inter est of everybody indicates that it will continue from the first to be a veritable beehive of activity here is a great opportunity for students faculty and alumni let us use it in full use it well and
