the bee the university of buffalo weekly volume 14 university of buffalo december 8 1933 no i kenneth eckhert announces 1934 prom committee at the meetng of the student ac tivities committee which was held tuesday night in women's lounge the committee for this year's junior prom was announced by chairman kenneth h eckart mr eckert re ported that tho date of the prom has been set as february 16 1984s it will be held as usual in the ballroom of the statler hotel an orchestra is now under consideration mem bers of the committee are raymond bunshaw and clayton weig from the school of medicine j henry splller and arthur kauschen from the school of dentistry 1 robert millonzi and charles dicbold from the law school edward stephenson and george eckert represent the school of pharmacy che arts students on the committee are mary klein mary powell richard ball and leon jehle business ad k.udents on the com mittee are robert rich and marshall stoll while jean miller and john garner represent the evening scs b.on students aid miss cornell do minor roles in famous romeo and juliet think actress is swell the u b student who played with katherine cornell in romeo and juliet last week grave her a big hand while the stage manager gave them a pat on the back and a check.(larg er than was expected out of the many who were called few were chosen there were four girls and eight nen from the univers ity whot fitted the costumes and were good enough to appear on the stage with the mighty cornell all of the students were duly im pressed although they didn't see her much and exchanged only a few words with her the students noticed the lack of temperament in the star and remarked about her calm and cool manner she was especially nice to all the members of her company the word which seemed to describe her perfectly was swell another person in the company who made a good impression on the students was jimmy the stage man j ager perhaps the reason that they j liked him was that he flattered them he told them that they were especial ly good and that they had clever ex trai when thoy came to buffalo the stage manager amused the students immensely when he called our friend brunner"blondie of the follies jim my also baw that all the extras got in to see the barretts for nothing — not even seats ik would seem that one of the girls named betty thought the the mens dressing rooms were far superior to the women's and that there couldn't be anything nic»r than being chummy with the male cast and to cut it short the students say that they never had more fun while working — as a matter of fact they never had more fun band at frosh convocation convocaion next wednesday prom ises to be a real event the fresh men have secured one of the out standing danc orchestras in buffao : after eaving tommie christian's or chestra ciff banting deveoped an orchestra that became very well knon ovr the national broadcasting company's radio chains the or chestra announces that in response to the request of the freshmen com mittee it will be willing to play at the u of b convocation of wednes day december 13 coming with the benzing bands men is one of buffalo's better known better ooking girl sooists ethel lee brown this is really a special since ethel lee brown is not connected with the benzing organization although they are giving their services free the bandsmen will come completely equipped to put on a reg ular show the twelve men will bv di'essfri in their regular uniforms and will be prapari 1 to do all their speci alty numbers among their special arrangements are annie doesn't live here any more and putidin head jones in other words along with the playing of special arrange ments of the latest popular numbers and the songs of ethel lee brown there will be all that will make for u hiif hour of enjoyable modern music concert of chamber music by ensemble is well received a concert of chamber music was given by the members of the sunday evening ensemble concert group on wednesday december 6 at 10.-..0 in edmund hayes auditorium the concert was one of the most in teresting ever given at school mar garet barrel one of buffalo's fav orite contraltos contributed two most enjoyable numebrs we were indeed lucky to be able to hear her the string quartet with piano accom paniment gave a delightful inter pretation of hure's work more pro grams of this sort will do much to encourage the student body to take i an intelligent interest in music the program was as follows bach contralta recitative and aria i from a solo cantata margaret barrell with string quar tet an dflute works for flute and clarinet alone by kuhlau and hindemith played by george levy and edward callia parkes jelly at tintagel narrative poem by sara teasdale set for contralto btring quartet and flute sung by margaret barrell with ensemble ac companiment jean hure quintet for piano and string quar tet illona mcleod harriet lewis olive gould ivan shapiro william carmon earle w gates prominent u b student ordained reverend earle w gates well known student in the arts college of th ellniversity of buffalo waß or dained into the ministry sunday no vember 26 tho ceremony took place at the lonsdale and east ferry street church at thren-fiftcen in the after noon ministers representing seven denominations were presten he has been assigned tu the church of christ in dunkirk and the woodland church of christ and has already assumed his duties there only once before in the annals of u b has a student seriously taken up this sort of work mr gates has had an interesting and checkered career graduated from kenmore high school in 1927 he did not immediately enter the university for several years he en gaged in numerous occupations which have proved of immeasurable value to him in his selection of a life work his choke is tlie result of serious re flection coupled with practical ex perience he has held positions with a railroad company he is interested in agriculture has serve das an as sistant chemist salesman nd ear penter his unusual versatility has often led him into unexpected fields one private school on the east side claims him as sports coach in their gym classes and manual training in structor any activity which brings him into close contact with human beings appeals to mr gates he believes no experience is valueless if it brings with it deeper under standing of human nature mr gutes has been interested in ecclesiastical affairs for some time he was president of the erie coun ty assembly of christian endeavor an organization in which he has been active for nine years since 1929 he has preachod in various churches of buffalo and neighboring dis tricts such as forest avenue church wanakah community church etc mr gates thinks there is a greater field for religion today than most people dream of and believes the world has yet to see what a life wholly consecrated to god can do in his opinion an ecclesiastical life if properly guided holds date the change in the title of he year book from iris to buffalonian was confirmed as was also the modi fication of the title of the bee to the buffalo bee it was voted to send a delegate 1.0 the convention of the national idaont confederation of america during the christmas vacation in washington d c the delegate will be selected by a committee of five appointed by the chairman of s a c the s a c voted to recommend ii the board of managers of the student union that i make an im mediate investigation of the lack of organization in debate and of the financial operations of student ac tivities it was also voted that in voted that in he future the coaches n those activities where coaching is involved be selected by the organi zations themselves the final motion of the evening came from ex-chairman lemon who proposed that the s a c request the board of managers of the stu dent union for the privilege of in cluding in the series of events in tended to celebrate the opening of organizations on november 27 dr nathanial cantor our eminent criminologist addressed the membes of the college club he spoke of our brutal penal system comparing it with the tortures of medieval days hinkley classical club organizes a new organization has been form ed on the campus on friday novem ber 24 a small group of students interested in the classical languages literature and art met in the lounge to organize a classical club the [ following officers were elected : : president katherine phillies first vice-president frieda schauroth second vice-president lillian bar rows secretary katherine jenss treasurer jack keller chairman of the program committee virginia kahler as this first meeting was primar ly social in purpose and character those attending made merry by sing ing songs vermont men unusually interesting mirthful contest disclaiming gesturing up until the iasl second of grace the university of vermont men debaters finally went down before the womei's de bating team of the university of buffalo in the women's lounge last friday evening the combatant indulged in a remarkably lively in teresting debate that ended with the judges voting 3-0 in favor of the u of b women the question deuated was resolved that the essential features of the british radio broad casting system be adopted by the united states john t horton as sistant professor of history antl gov ernment presided the judges of the debate were miss mabel j valentine chairman ot the municipal affairs committee erie county league of women vot ers miss julia a o'mara donating coach fosdick-masten park hign school and irvin h liimmele debat ing coach at lafayette high scnool the vermont men arguing upon the affirmative side were realttts e mccuin frank w hale and david w jenks the u of b women sup porting the negative side were adele boehmke josephin pound and mary kline dr helen d reid is buffalo's women's debating coach declaring for government owner ship and operation of radio the ver mont loans invites applications i the committee on scholarships land loans of the university of buf falo announces that the time for fil ing applications for aid has been changed from september ist to june ist awards will be announced about the middle of august this change has been made because of the great er number of students applying for aid ncessitating more time for inter viewing applications for aid for the second semester should be in the hands of the committee on or before january 4th although scholarship and loan funds are not large 189 students have been helped this year the committee time for fil ing applications for aid has been changed from september ist to june ist awards will be announced about the middle of august this change has been made because of the great er number of
