council party for frosh a success we must hand it to this year's student council in knowing how to plan and hold a successful dance particularly when the greater share of the guests are freshmen as yet quite hazy about the ways of college life to tell the truth we did have plenty of doubts about the possibili ties of the party at first but after a few moments that beemed centuries some ambitious souib started the ball arolllng or it may have been those harmonious strains by jack ann bruster's orchestra that made the feet dance several shot-gun dances were arranged a council member at the handle and to all appearances the fated couples survived and once the ice had been brokn not even the plaintive strains of home sweet home could btop the fun refreshments in the form of tea and plenty of cookies completed the afternoon ruth lane was the able chairman of the affair supported by the various members of the council seniors ruth lane dell flelschman and charles dwyer president of the group juanita clark mark blnkley and les cuthbert juniors and peggy joslyn and bob storms sophomores all freshmen should be well on the way to becoming acquainted with the other members of their class welcome joe manch u b football star explains flop scores students blackburn administration and faculty by joaeph r manch reprinted by permission from the september issue of town tidings it was my experience to be a regular varsity member of the university of buffalo football team for three years the seasons 1929 through 1981 during that time i had an excellent appor tunity to observe the football situa tion at my alma mater from the inside and in the light ot this i say that tho chief causes for the repeated failure of football at the university of buf falo during recent years can be found in the attitude toward the nation's most popular gave of certain mem bers of the faculty certain members of the athletic council and the stu dent body it is also possible that more or less indirectly the chamber of commerce and mr william black burn graduate manager of athletics at u b also to blame the first because it does not give active evidence that it realizes what a good team at u & can do to advertise buffalo and mr blackburn because he has not always put his whole heart and soul into his work incidentally he is not a u b graduate by this time i'm afraid some of yon , may be asking well why all tho shouting what difference doea it make whether u b has a good foot ball team or not what can an al team do for the city of buffalo for the university of buffalo all right let's settle this once and for all visualize if you will a towering stadium situated in rotary field cap able of seating fifty or sixty thousand people imagine large colleges sending their football teams here to play u.b and worrying as to the outcome of the games ~ imagine twwtty ttomaaud people or more streaming into the city from outlying towns and cities then imagine headlines on the sports pages of every large newapaper in the united states reading some thing like this u.b defeats har vard 14 to 0 would conditions such as those hen's glee club rehearsal tuesday the university men's glee club stephan the other two members of the com mittee could not be there the big event of the first day was a ball game between the faculty nine and the freshmen the latter proving the superiority of brawn over brain doc tfoman pitching for the faculty was in a position for a bhut out in the first few innings but he lacked the infield support the conferencea were great every body gathered around a big fire in one of the smaller cablna of the camp to discuss campus activities the various schools of the university possible courses methods of study and other topics of common interest the re mainder of
