the bee vol 10 university of buffalo october 4 1929 no 2 registration at law school looms to be record breaker number of freshmen favorable working conditions suitable relief for depressing con ditions is sought this year's freshman class at the school of law is a record breaker in more ways than one there are los students registered for the first year in law four of whom are women this large number necessitates housing the frosh in townsend hall rather than in the west eagle street quarters with the rest of the school twenty seven of this group already have one or more degrees perhaps the most unusual freshman in a long time is miss s elizabeth nassau who majors in political ad ministration she already possesses the degree of b a buffalo and m a canisius and has done grad uate work at columbia she is a member of the honorary national and international political science organ ization pi sigma alpha is in fact the only person in buffalo to have that honor the freshman curriculum has been rather uneventful thus far it is ex pected that this large class will have dwindled about fifty per cent by christmas in that event classes will be held at the school of law as in former years a change much desired by those freshmen who at present find the noise of the excavation work on the new city hall quite distracting there are in addition to the fresh men go juniors and about 50 seniors at the law school making a total registration of 218 this is the larg est enrollment in the history of the school small wonder then that they find themselves cramped for room in the narrow building on fagle street perhaps the endowment campaign to gether with numerous hustings out will remedy this depressing situation medics to inaugurate new interne system the life of a senior medic will not be a bed of roses in the future we don't mean to infer that he's been able to loaf in the past but when he assumes his new duties he will think so himself that's if he gets time to think by a new plan set forth by the faculty of the medical school and the executives of the buffalo city hospi tal the senior medics will take over many of the tasks for which internes were formerly hired one of the ad vantages of this plan is that it will do away with more than twenty municipal jobs half of the senior class will go immediately to the city hospital to take over the duties of internes these students will make the many laboratory tests prescribed for those who are ill they will have the opportunity to study disease at first band under the immediate supervision at all times of a fully qualified medi cal doctor the other half of the class will study as formerly in the general hos pital these two groups will change places at the end of the first semester plans for further development of the relation existing between the city hospital and the university are under way briefly it is hoped to offer a three-year post graduate course in medicine for those who choose to take it they will become members of the house staff of the hospital and during the three years after graduation will study to advance themselves in medi cine or surgery pageant to boom u b endowment fund campaign a special meeting f the student body was called on friday september 21 for the purpose of revealing thr plans according to which the endow ment fund campaign will be con ducted chancellor capen after out linillg the course of procedure intro duced miss jane keeler head of the theater school who has so generously offered her services in the direction of a pageant which will play an im portant part in the campaign miss keeler spoke in detail concerning the pageant written for us by mrs jose phine wilhelm wickser and empha sized the responsibility which will nat urally fall on the students if this is to be made a success enthusiasm in the undertaking and willingness to co-operate was expressed by a stand ing vote of the assemblage at the close of the meeting each student was given a booklet of facts about his university with the greater part of which he was no doubt unacquainted if however he has the welfare of the university at heart he will not remain long in this state but will be come so familiar with them that he will be an intelligent worker in the campaign the hl ue masquers under the di rection of miss mcfadden are as an organization going to take over a large part of the work of making this pageant a success remember that it is to be given with the view of arousing and increasing the interest of buffalonians in this university so that when approached by workers of the endowment fund campaign to hi conducted october 1 7-2 they will be interested enough to contribute then if you are asked to take part in the pageant and even though it is a minor part where you are to be one of many don't forget that there is strength in numbers and that you pledged your co-operation fifty new men needed for glee club tryouts more than thirty men have tried out for the men's glee club nearly all of these applicants came from the freshman classes of the arts or bus iness administration colleges de spite the fact that these schools sup ply the majority of men for the glee club this organization is not limited to them the staff desires a repre sentation from every college in par ticular from the pharmacists who with the new three year course will be able to earn keys dentistry law and medicine support the musical ac tivities very poorly at least thirty and preferably fifty new men are needed to complete try outs if the club is to continue its fine work presented by well trained se lected singers three of the four weeks allowed for testing voices re main on the following tuesdays october s 15 and 22 mr 1 m ward will receive applicants at the central v m c a at 7:30 regular rehearsals for all former members and this year's applicants begin october 15 promptly at 7:-15 freshmen dance to amuse sophs the sophomores are at it again a selected group of freshmen were warmly entertained last tuesday afternoon by an enthusiastic crowd of sophs under the leadership of john henderson their president overwhelmed by these attentions of upperclassmen the willing they had to be frosh delighted their hosts with an exhibition of interpretative danc ing interspersed with frequent songs which was highly acceptable these first-year men are extremely eccentric little persuasion was nec essary to induce them to parade gaily along with their coats and vests draped over their left arms shirts open at the neck and ties turned to the rear after obliging with a verse of the alma mater they were asked to assume the angle and given an oppor tunity to look for four-leaf clovers a few exciting moments left them with a sense of burning indignation in no wise alleviated by the assurances of the solicitous sophs that the heat treatment was applied to prevent their catching colds from not wearing their ducky little blue and white caps per haps there was also a desire to incul cate a wholesome respect for their superiors sophomores who were not present at the first reception have evinced an eager interest in the affair and the frosh will not be neglected hereafter it has been found — the way to save the university from a campaign the chancellor capen enjoys extensive european trip for the first time since 1921 chan cellor capen and his family sailed for europe on june 14th on the cunard liner tuscania a motor trip from paris through the chateau country of france was the first of a series of delightful ex periences then they motored university of buffalo as of october 1 1020 is as follows the college of arts and sciences with a registration of 010 shows a decrease due to the fact that most all previous special students are taking
