mr john d klels of hamburg n y graduate student at the university of buffalo college of arts and sciences has just ben notified of his appoint ment to a teaching asslstantship in physics at yale university for next year mr klels graduated from hamburg high school in 1928 and now holds his b a degree from the university of buffalo his new appointment will cov er all expenses of a year of graduate work at yale where he will continue his study of magnetism at the pres ent time mr klels is engaged in a spe cial study of what happens in a piece of metal when magnetized hoping to clear up present knowledge of various effects produced by magnetic action mr klels is the latest of a number of graduate students in physics who have taken their earlier work at the univer sity of buffalo according to professor edward j moore head of the depart ment of physics nine of these stu dents have held fellowships or assist antablps at other universities in recent years which enabled them to pay their expenses there annual home concert glee clubs april 21 this year the first friday after easter falls on april 21 this date has always been set aside for the home concert this twelfth annual affair presented by the combined glee clubs will feature not only their own pro gram but also dancing from 10 til 2 to the compelling tempos of the century orchestra traditionally cap and gown senior penitentiary the students in mr j bramer's class in crlmnology were given the unusual treat of a tour through the erie county penitentiary in millgrove near alden last tuesday evening warden elsaesser made it possible for the students to visit with a guide the women's prison the dining room the bakery the men's prison and he sollary confinement cells the penitentiary students learned receives only mlsdeamenants of whom sixty at the time of their visit were women the prison is kept emaculate ly clean by the women inmates and the major portion of the remaining work that has to be done in the institution such as cooking baking and tailoring is also performed by the inmates the bakery turns out thousands of loaves of bread each day with which it sup plies the erie county home and the lodging house at niesl time the prisoners enter the dining room each with bis own cup and are served cafeteria style pork and beans with macaroni on fridays are prominent in the diet regulubion uniforms the students noticed consist of gray trousers and blue shirts at 8:00 p m the cell doors are lock ed and at 9 00 p m lights are put out bach cell is sanitarily equipped in most miklern university of buffalo women's debate tcani was again triumphant over the team from mather college of western reserve university in a return debate held last friday afternoon in the women's lounge the subject un der dicsusslon was resolved : that 00 per cent of all state and local taxes be derived from sources other than tangible property the affirmative of the question was supported by repre sentatives from western reserve while the negative was upheld by tn buf falo team debating for the university f were the misses betty townsend doris krelnheder and josephine pound the major contention of the affirma tive team was that a redistribution of the tax burden is necessary since in comes not tangible property are a fair and jest measure of the individual's capacity to pay in arguing for the present system the negative team maintained that tangible items are foir sound and stable base for state and local taxes that intangible items are already sufficiently burdened at the hands of the federal government ; that the income tax and general sales taxes are unfair and unproductive forms of taxation they also arc for local units of government and a redistribution of the burden would only ship the 101 basketball team downed the buffalo bisons 31-27 at the elm wood music hall tuesday night the vkttory marked the second win for the 101 five over the former u b stars the bisons got off to a 3-0 lead but this was short-lived once the big guns for the 101's got their eyes on the nets poor casting from the foul line kept the bisons from taking the lead on a few occasions the former conference champs rallied near the end of the half ibolng on the long end of a 11-9 score but th lot's put the skids on this scor ing outburst and went ahead to lend at the half-way mark 16-11 coming back strongly the bisons tied up the old ball game at 16 all and dis played some of the speed that made them a feared aggregation in collegiate circles tommy syracuse kept the fans on the edge of their seats in this half with lis spectacular heaves from mid court taking the lead 21-17 the 101 five did not relinquish their advantage although one of tommy's shots brought the bisons within a point of knotting the count when it stood 23-19 in favor of the victors syracuse and molanowlez starred for the former bulls while nell o'donnell high scorer for the evening took down oont on page 4 col 1 bart house string quartet on april 10 the hart house string quartette welt-known group of musicians wbo gave a concert at the university last december will present another pro gram on next monday april 10 at 10 30 a m in the women's lounge of hayes hall it has been aranged to have bis second concert in the morning in order to make it possible for a num ber of students to attend a dlssap polntlugly small number appeared at the december concert which was held in the afternoon and it is hoped that many students will take advanage of this second opporunity to hear the hart house string of music clubs whose president is mrs etta hamilton morris and has as its ob jective the fostering of local contests whloh it is hoped will develop into national contests in the near future bach of the four clubs competing will sing may night by brahms and an other contest song of their own choice besides the contest songs each club is to present two other numbers and the whole ensemble of 226 year will be on sale tbey who paid two dollars down can secure their copy of the iris upon further payment of 2.00 this means a saving of 1.00 at the same time the 1931-32 iris will in on display the ship the 101 basketball team downed the buffalo bisons 31-27 at the elm wood music hall tuesday night the vkttory marked the second win for the 101 five over the former u b stars the bisons got off to a 3-0 lead but this was short-lived once the big guns for the 101's got their eyes on the nets poor casting from the foul line kept the bisons from taking the lead on a few occasions the former conference champs rallied near the end of the half ibolng on the long end of a 11-9 score but th lot's put the skids on this scor ing outburst and went ahead to lend at the half-way mark 16-11 coming back strongly the bisons tied up the old ball game at 16 all and dis played some of the speed that made them a feared aggregation in collegiate circles tommy syracuse kept the fans on the edge of their seats in this half with lis spectacular heaves from mid court taking the lead 21-17 the 101 five did not relinquish their advantage although one of tommy's shots brought the bisons within a point of knotting the count when it stood 23-19 in favor of the victors syracuse and molanowlez starred for the former bulls while nell o'donnell high scorer for the evening took down oont on page 4 col 1 bart house string quartet on april 10 the hart house string quartette welt-known group of musicians wbo gave a concert at the university last december will present another pro gram on next monday april 10 at 10 30 a m in the women's lounge of hayes hall it has been aranged to have bis second concert in the morning in order to make it possible for a num ber of students to attend a dlssap polntlugly small number appeared at the december concert which was held in the afternoon and it is hoped that many students will take advanage of this second opporunity to hear the hart house string quartette the wednesday schedule of late classes adjusted according to the time occupied by the concert will be in ef fect on monday and on wednesday the 12th the ordinary schedule will be fol lowed the price of tickets has been rea sonably placed at twenty-five cents so that all music-loving students should find l possible to attend while the program which is to be posted shortly will not be of
