dr capen reviews activities of year at commencement the year that has just passed is likely to occupy a very special place m the history of the university of buffalo more than thirty-two thou sand of its friends subscribed for its support nearly five and one-half mil lion dollars if nothing but that statement should appear m the his torical record it would be arresting enough when tl ere is added to the statement the further facts that the subscription was made during the severe financial panic and that it ex iceeded by almost half a million the amount asked for the achievement becomes still more impressive but only when one thinks of the sources from which this immense sum is being | drawn does the full import of the i undertaking of which the university is the beneficiary become apparent i thirty-two thousand subscribers all but a few of them residents of our city thirty-two thousand friends ready and for the most part eager to help m the upbuilding of this great instrument for the public welfare thirty-two thousand people who have identified themselves with the univer sity who have placed the tangible stamp of their approval on its major purposes where can one find a parallel this question is easily an swered there is no parallel the university of buffalo stands unique among the universities of this or any other country m the number of people who have at any one time voluntarily united for its support and they range m economic ability from the very rich to the very poor why have they done so ? in part no doubt just because they are americans the most nearly univer sal conviction of americans is their faith m education americans be lieve that education will make this country both strong and worthy to be strong they believe that educa tion is the surest instrument of democracy the one certain protection against the growth of fixed social classes that without it our funda mental institutions can neither be comprehended nor maintained nor yet improved one hundred and fifty years of history sustain their belief they believe further that the fullest educational opportunity that society anywhere affords should be open to all who are competent to profit by it and to this basic american faith the citizens of buffalo add their own peculiar interpretation buffalo is not given to facile boasting of all the great american municipalities it is perhaps the least inclined to advertise its advantages or its virtues it may even be a little too modest a little ' too self-depreciatory but let an ap 1 peal be made to its civic consciousness or its civic pride and observe the response the measure of buffalo's loyalty to the finest ideals of ameri can life is to be found m the scores of enterprises designed to enrich the culture or to promote the welfare of the city practically all of which have had their origin not m the decrees of the city government but m the ' voluntary efforts of the citizens if dr thurber appointed dean of colgate dr clarence h thurber executive secretary and dean of the summer session has been appointed dean of the faculty and director of the edu cational program at colgate univer sity officials of that institution announced saturday dr thurber will fill his capacity of dean of the summer session at buffalo and will assume his new duties at colgate he is now at col gate university where he gave the commencement address last monday chancellor capen addresses students freedom the aim of uni versity he says every university is engaged m demonstrating the responsibility of freedom declared chancellor samuel p capen m his baccalaureate address sunday afternoon m hayes hall the university he continued m commenting on the purpose of educa tion then is chiefly er.gaged m get ting people ready to conduct the freest kinds of careers that are open to us who live amid the restraints of mod ern civilization this is not the sole task of the university of course it has other very important tasks there is the provision of a certain amount of general education for example and there is the development of stand ards of taste and judgment and domi nating all there is research that great adventure of the mind out beyond the boundaries of the known nevertheless the bulk of any uni versity's resources of equipment and human energy is devoted to preparing people to live professional lives since that is so the university ought to prefigure perhaps to evaggerate the conditions of the professional life it ought to embody the principal charac teristics of the professional life m extreme form it ought to make a cult of freedom continued on page 3 column 3 try club io p.m senior sport dance tonight
