the bee the greater university of buffalo weekly university of buffalo september 27 1929 vol 10 mk9 no i the lockwood memorial library chancellor capen presides at 84th convocation university turns out en-masse for opening convocation honored traditions elaborated by dr capen the opening convocation of the eighty-fourth year of the university of buffalo was held at 10:30 wednes day morning september 25th in the auditorium of edmund hayes hall the students remained standing while the faculty entered making an im pressive showing in academic robes dr boynton pronounced the invoca tion this was followed by the sing ing of two verses of america by the assembly chancellor capen in a short ad dress to the students dwelt upon the age and meaning of the university of buffalo and of universities in gen eral this year marks the 84th year of the existence of the university of buffalo — quite a respectable antiquity in the annals of american universi ties the university has gathered more momentum with every year in the last decade — its vitality has in creased materially this condition is normal in the life of the average uni versity the institution contrary to the course of most human institutions grows stronger with age universi ties have lasted about 1,000 years and continue to make progress the personality of a university also grows stronger with age each university has its peculiar character istics the students and intelligent supporters of an institution determine its personality although physical en vironment has its effect as well chancellor capen next summarized his opinion of the conception of the founders of the university of buffalo as to the purpose of a university it should be a place single mindedly devoted to the promotion of intellec tual life leadership in the modern world is more and more an intellec tual leadership which should be fos tered by the university the university should sponsor a spirit of free inquiry — independence of thought and expression each in dividual therein is responsible for his work opinions and expressions the spirit of the university should be primarily creative not imitative lastly the university and its members are trustees of all they pos sess and can acquire for public good dental school successfully inaugurates 40 week plan faculty expresses favorably for the innovation the new forty week plan as pro mulgated by dean squire of the school of dentistry has been in effect since july of the current year this innovation provides for a 3-year course of instruction in dentistry each year being divided into eleven week periods with two week vacations between each quarter upon being interviewed at the close of the first quarter of the course the instructors at the dental school expressed opinions very favorable to this child of the sagacity of dean squire dr k w groh declared himself very much for it — in the first place because it is a great advantage to the student by cutting a year off the course making it of four years length rather than five as in the past the greatest advantage however he said is the continuity of instruc tion there being no lapse from study in the summer rather is there an uninterrupted linking of the technique acquired in the laboratory with the practical experience attained in the infirmary dr cutler in his office at the dev ereaux professional building ex pressed his manifest approval and confidence in the innovation by term ing it the thing dr quinby in the same building called it a great thing it chops a year off school training which the student rapidly makes up when in pal nrart'-ce he brought up the question of whether the health of the student will hold out for 3 straight years considering the fact how ever that dean squire has arranged classes to be out at 3:30 giving ample opportunity for recreation there should be no risk to the students health yes and dr quinby smiled even though it does mean more work for the instructor too it will be satisfactory to the majority of students and i am very much for it.'i dr robert conn applied the progl matic test to what he called a finf idea i it's working we have receiv i no complaints the work is fasti i more is being accomplished in l i time everybody seems satisfied 1 sure frosh pharmics get fast start for big year the pharmacy school near neia bor of the college of clubs and the farewell supper at the consistory as the climax of a most enjoyable year the real attraction of a musical or ganization however lies in the oppor tunities which it offers for those who
