the bee the university of buffalo weekly vol 13 university of buffalo oct 7 1932 no 3 professor bernard fay gives english and french lectures series on contemporary french life and modern french literature twentieth century club the first of nine lectures on con temporary french life in english was given by professor bernard fay on tuesday evening october 4th the aeries in english will be continued on tuesday nights while one in french on modern french literature will be given thursday evenings these lec tures are being held in the colonial ballroom of the twentieth century club during the months of october and no vember and may be attended by the public as well as by students without charge professor fay visiting professor at the university of buffalo on the mrs joseph t jones foundation was born in paris in 1893 he was educated at the university of paris where ho re ceived the degrees of agrege des lettres and later of docteur ea lettres pro fessor fay has served with both the french and american armies in the latter in the capacity of liaison officer twice ho was decorated for valor croix do guerre and croix de leopold ii in 1919 harvard university awarded him the chapman fellowship and in 1920 the degree of master of arts since then professor fay has taught at columbia university the university of lowa northwestern university has de livered lectures in many other american universities and was elected professor in tho faculty of letters of the univer sity of clermont-ferrand france a short time ago ho was elected to a new chair at the college do france the evolution of ideas and the history of literature from the eighteenth cen tury to the present time constitute the subject of professor fay's principal publications on the ideas of the eighteenth century he has published l'esprit eevolutionnaire en franco et aui etats-unis a la fin du xviii e siecle this was his doctoral desscrta tion and was awarded the prix therou anne of the french academy and the jesserand model of the amoricnn his evening session faculty convene the faculty of the evening session university of buffalo met at luncheon on saturday october 1 in the west brook apartments north street and delaware avenue chancellor samuel p capen was the principal speaker professor lewis a fronian was in troduced as the new assistant dean of the evening session and he and dean marsh spoke briefly dr julius w pratt professor of american history and chairman of the department of history and government braved the torrid climate of washing ton d c during the summer months with the exception of the six weeks when he taught in the summer session of the university he was engaged in research work in the library of congress on the subject of the attitude of american busi ness toward intervention in cuba in 1898 and toward the acquisition of over seas colonies by the united states dr pratt's work was made possible by a grant from the social science kcsearcli council he expects to use the material he collected in an article or possibly in a book some time in the future philosophy club the philosophy club which is now in its fourth successive year will hold its first meeting on friday october 7 in edmund hayes hall the purpose of tho meeting is to elect officers for this year the club is open to anyono who has had or is at present taking a course in philosophy they urge you to come one and all and promise many good times and interesting speakers chancellor capen to plan active part in conference atn y u announcement was made this week by chancellor elmer ellsworth brown of new york university that chancellor capen of the university of buffalo was to play an active part in a conference on the obligation of universities to the social order to be sponsored by new york university next month the four principal sub-topics under which the major theme of the conference is to be treated are 1 the university today its aims and province 2 the university and economic changes 3 the university and governmental changes 4 the university and spiritual val ues chancellor capen is to preside over a discussion session during which the first point is to be treated he will not only address the gathering on that subject but will also lead an organized discus sion dr chase president of the uni versity of illinois will also speak on the same program a very prominent group of leaders have been assembled for the conference which includes sir arthur salter brit ish economist ; dr angell president brookings institute dr moulton presi dent columbia university thomas w lamont walter lippman and many others the conference is to be held novem ber 15-17 at the waldorf-astoria in new york male glees will start work on program immediately the university of buffalo men's glee club tried out several more new men last tuesday evening nt the central y m c a when the club meets for its first rehearsal next tuesday evening a balanced club of nearly 50 men are ex pected to be present work will be started immediately on progrnm numbers this year's program it was announced by mr ward director is to include several new numbers so selected as to place the organization's repertoire on an even higher level than before john mccreery student manager an nounces that special attention will bo given to organizations with which stu dents of the university are connected if they wish to sponsor the club in any of its programs such organizations as churches musical clubs parent-teachers associations and the like have success fully presented the glee club in the past mr mccreery will gladly furnish infor mation to ull those who arc interested amelia earhart coming miss ruth witherstinc of our own classical department announces that the american association of university women has succeeded in bringing miss amelia earhart trans-atlantic flyer and aviatrix extraordinary to buffalo miss earlhart will speak at the elmwood music hall on november 29 students of the university and high schools will receive a special student rate of 75c for the lecture the proceeds are to bo used in the association schlolurship fund which is now supporting six students in american universities miss earhart '« subject together with additional in formation will appear in a later edition of the bee dance tonight tonight the celebration of a blessed event will take place feet and of course 2.20 tnx included don't forget tonight at ten o'clock professor kurtz visits england and continent being an eye witness to a political demonstration that borders on the sensa tional is not an opportunity that is pre sented to many of us such an oppor tunity however was afforded mr leon ard p kurtz instructor in romance languages while in berlin this summer at the university of berlin many of the students are affiliated with the nazis one of tho german political parties hostile to communism one evening as mr kurtz was leaving his hotel in com pany with a young student he came upon a wild mob of uniformed students of the nazi party almost seven hundred students and non-students were aroused over the presence of two communist youths in the vicinity and were doing their best to manhandle them in a severe manner the police finally took a hand only after the youths were badly beaten president paul von hindcnburg imme diately took strict measures and closed tho university for two days surrounding the grounds with troops on this extensive trip through eastern and southeastern europe mr kurtz had an excellent opportunity to observe pres ent conditions existing in england ger many and france mr kurtz said there was not the influx of tourists into the european cities as there had been in former years paris the gay french city seemed to have its share of foreigners however in paris mr kurtz visited the biblio theque nationale and the bibliothcque de mazarin the great library begun by charles v the library situation in eur ope is very encouraging the students are taking every advantage that these libraries offer them and study diligently with confidence in the future many of the unemployed men of lon don have rather unique ways to keep the wolf from the door groups of four tramp the streets singing melodies old and new hoping to earn a few cents by drawing sketches on the sidewalks with colored crayons others are trying to earn a living sometimes one of these fellows possesses ability and attracts the atten tion of those passing to his sidewalk artistry william barr university on the air miss ruth witherstine of the classical department is conducting a series of highly interesting talks on the discov eries of archeology and their relations and contributions to our knowledge of history the first talk which was pre sented about three weeks ago dealt with tho actual method employed by science to unearth the wealth of data concern ing prehistoric man in the succeeding loctures the discoveries in egypt asia minor greece and rome were explained in detail the subject for the next talk is the discoveries of ancient life in america these lectures are broadcast over station wkbw every monday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock the enthusiasm with which the listen ers of wkbw are receiving this series is a direct tribute to miss witherstine who has succeeded in dressing the com plicated technicalities of archeology in a modern understandable dress and presenting them to a radio audience in so interesting a manner that the broad casting company to whom this program is an experiment joins the fans in pro claiming its scccess grease-gun robbery places u.b student in lime light u b student frustrates burglars so read the headlines as our alma mater breaks into popular print william barr was the lucky t student it seems that barr was working in a gasoline station on niagara street when two men ap proached the station asked for an ad dress and then departed they soon returned one of them asking for a glass of water then according to barr's statement the thirsty one called from the washroom asking for a glass since a glass is kept in the room barr became suspicious he locked the cash in the register only to find himself facing a revolver undaunted barr grabbed a grease-gun and whacked the burglar over the head haworth who had been standing near the door fled and kelly the thirsty one beat it out with barr on his heels to correct any misstatements be it understood that barr hit kelly three 3 times did not lose his thumb and is feeling on top of the world deep sympathy is felt for mrs kelly she called mr barr asking that he do all he could for her wayward charge she is the mother of six children and is quite hysterical about the whole affair the cop who investigated the crime that night asked barr if the criminals were italian to which barr replied no irish inasmuch as the cop's name was also kelly the reporters were furnished with a good laugh hal hal and now it is rumored that mr barr will put on an exhibition at the beta nhi bymion dr^ce q**»fart ?°. st f vo colvin gables he will swing the gtcase-gun national pharmacy week celebrated october 10-15 the week of october 10-15 which be gins next monday has been dedicated as national pharmacy week this week has been recognized by president hoover in a proclamation as well as by the governors of many states the school of pharmacy of the university of buffalo is cooperating in bearing out the objects of the week by holding its third annual open house during the period of open house which will be from 7:30 to 9:30 on thursday evening octo ber 13 exhibits and displays of the departments of materia medica botany nnd the allied sciences will be shown special demonstrations will also be car ried on during the period of open house some of the demonstrations include demonstration of the action of drugs on living animals demonstration of circulation in a frog's foot as well as several moving pictures the commercial pharmical department will have a professional window displaying glandular products and showing the part of the animal from which these products are obtained the commercial depart ment will also have exhibits and show cards as a special feature for this year's program a period from 3:00 to 5:00 on thursday afternoon has been set aside for high school students in this way the school of pharmacy hopes to stimu late interest among the high schools in its own school as well as in the whole university the committee in charge of the open house night includes mrs loon monell chairman dr margaret swisher and dr laurence lackie blue masquers hold try-outs blue masquers appreciate the grati fying and promising turnout for tryouts held on monday tuesday and wednes day afternoons from 1:15 on for fresh men and upperclassmen aspiring to be come members of the dramatic society those who appeared on one of the try-out days will be informed the early part of next week whether they have been accepted as white masquers the organization is preparing to present a three-act play the first week of decem ber with the talent of old and new members combined we venture to prophesy a highly successful production s.a c suspends publication of the bison " for one year s a c votes bison " out of existence or until a group petitions the s a c for its revival no students barred the meeting of the student activities committee last friday resulted in the suspension of the bison university of buffalo comic magazine for one year with the proviso that a group of stu dents might organize and petition the s a c for the revival of the bison this group is to bear in mind that a comic and literary magazine is essential many of the students present at this meeting doubted whether the bison or any other predominantly humorous magazine has a place in the higher in tellectual life of the university em phasis was placed upon the fact that any future magazine should be more lit erary than comic mr arbesman made no attempt to defend the position of the bison he admitted the low humor and alleged slanderous remarks he did say how ever that the suspension of the bison would entail a great loss in advertising any future publication must of necessity begin all over again in regard to advertising he was re futed by a remark that this would prove the fidelity of any new publication the editor of the bison made sev eral promises to the s a c 1 to apoldgizc in the next issue of the bee 2 to personally apologize to thoße persons or organizations insulted 3 to refund money to subscribers 4 to withdraw as many ' issues of the bison as possible dr carleton f scofield stated that mr arbesman was out of town at the time of the publication of the bison and that three people on the staff made up the last issue of the bison the s a c felt that these three persons were not wholly responsible but that the editor-in-chief and other members of the staff were technically to blame it was felt that mr arbesman as editor was responsible as censor the s a c was of the concerted opin ion that the bison had gone too far this is the third time that the bison has been brought before the committee as a result of this last issue added com plaints have come from parents tho public who has subscribed so generously to university financial campaigns stu dents and organizations slandered and tho student body in any event the bison may be sued for libel the meeting was brought to a close after a vote was taken in which the faculty did not participate the only dissenting vote was cast by carl arbes man those students present who voted were roy hock lattimore ford ken neth mayer roland benzow helen pe ters betty donovan ruth truman irma wagner darwin de marchi will iam sawyer john mccreery and sam lieberman bison apologizes publicly to rectify its recent offense the bison desires to take this space and opportunity to extend a sin cere apology to all individuals the sigma kappa sorority and all other or ganizations it offended by the publica tion of its freshman number there was no justification for the false statements and innuendos the editor re grets that malicious propaganda should have been printed the bison interfraternity council adopts new rushing rules to the fraternities the following changes in the rushing rules were adopted by the interfrater nity council in may subject to ratifica tion by the several fraternities a vote upon these changes was taken at a meet ing of the council on tuesday evening october 4th with the exception of these changes the rules remain as printed in the hand book rule 3 rushing shall begin on monday october 10 1932 rule 4 from october 10th to 17th in clusive there shall be a period of open rushing rule 5 beginning monday october 17 there shall be one week of assigned rushing each frater nity being allotted one night for any rushing activity rule 8 between 11:30 a m and 3:00 p m on monday october 24 each rushce shall hand in a preference card to the neutral body located in edmund hayes auditorium rule 9 each fraternity shall hand in an individual bid and a list of those rushees it desires to pledge before 3:00 p m monday october 24 to the neutral body rule 13 fraternities violating the rushing rules shall be sub ject to the following penal ties a loss of privileges in 1933 rushing b restriction of social privi leges for 1932-33 c publication of infringe ment in bee interfraternity council women's club miss ruth witherstino of the depart ment of classics will speak at the next luncheon meeting of the women's club on wednesday october 12 in the women's lounge miss witherstinc's subject has not yet been announced but the members of the women's club have heard her several times and know that she will tell them something of real in terest all women students in the university are members of the women's club and will be welcome at the meeting the cost of the luncheon is twenty-five cents and those who expect to come arc asked to sign the paper which will be posted in the basement u b band makes debut at alfred game tomorrow i felix grassi manager of the u.b band announced that the band will make its appearance at the buffalo alfred game at rotary field tomorrow the boys will appear in uniform under the conduction of avram greenberg the band will play at the rally to take place before the traditional rochester game mr grassi stated tho rehearsal will bo held in hayes auditorium friday night at 8:30 at which time uniforms will be distributed all freshman musicians are urged to at tend alumnae hold first meeting the alumnae association of the uni versity of buffalo will hold its first meeting of the year on wednesday octo ber 12 in the women's lounge in ed mund hayes hall at 8 p m mr a glenni bartholomew a prominent attor ney in buffalo and chairman of the uni versity council will be the speaker of the evening following his address more entertainment is promised all women who are graduates of the university are members and all former students holding at least one year's credit are associate members and are invited to attend the meeting the officers of the alumnae associa
