the bee the university of buffalo weekly vol 12 university of buffalo april 1 1932 no 22 annual musical fete tonight glee clubs quartet soloists to be heard in concert concert to be followed by dance tonight amid the splendor of the hotel statler ballroom the combined musical clubs of the university of buffalo will present their eleventh an nual home concert and dance phis year both the men's and the women's glee club will participate in the contest both in the form of sepa rate organizations and as a mixed chorus of 85 voices in addition to the clubs the program will feature the men's quartet composed of john bobbie first tenor robert mont gomery second tenor hollis steven son first bass and frank kuhn sec ond bass several soloists including ralph weegar violinist and william lynd saxophonist will complete the program mr jay mark ward will direct the clubs and eleanor a schill ing will be accompanist prank kuhn manager of the men's glee club and president of the senior arts class is general chairman of the affair assisting him are the fol lowing members in charge of tickets virginia mayer and j ray wood john ston publicity irma wagner and john mccreery ushers irma wag ner fraternity boxes robert wine gar patrons eleanor schilling the staff of ushers is made up of one representative from each sorority those made known at the time the bee went to press are as follows bertha deane alpha gamma delta ann conn sigma kappa mary powell—theta chi helen steck—pi kappa phi virginia williams phi psi jean constable pi delta nu lucille steeg—zeta tau virginia kerr has been chosen as head usher university of buffalo women's glee club cap and gown taps members at concert tonight cap and gown senior women's honorary society will announce to night at the home concert the junior kirls who will be chosen to member ship for the coming school year these new members will be selected on their merits as leaders scholars and participants in campus activities membership in cap and gown is the highest honor that can come to a uni versity of buffalo woman student the ceremony will take place dur ing the dancing following the home concert in the statler ballroom there is a rumor circulating about that there are at least two new and surprising features which will em bellish the ceremony present members of cap and gown are ruth e german president mary louise nice secretary-treas urer edna geissler dorothy spar l>erg keith hill and dorothy haas dr sumner writes on water traffic contrary to the established belief that carriers on inland waterways can handle only commodities of large bulk and low value the facts show that the freight traffic of the mississippi an l especially that of the inland waterways corporation is of a grade s ul>stantially comparable with that li iied by railroads according to elusions reached by dr john d sumner of the u of b in an article j"st published in the quarterly jour nal of land and public utility eco nomics though not demonstrating that the ' iir se line can compete successfully r classes of freight the averages presented nevertheless disclose a merable portion of high value c mniodities such as automobiles and r cks machinery explosives and canned goods dr sumner states first dambach fund award announced the faculty of the school of phar macy wishes to announce the first award to be given from the dambach scholarship fund this fund was pro vided for in the will of the late wil liam c dambach in which he stated that from that part of his estate which was given to the university of buffalo a certain amount should be given to the school of pharmacy this sum has been established as a scholarship fund to be awarded to pharmacy students preferably seniors or juniors who have a good scholar ship record and who are in need of financial assistance mr dambach was himself a pharmacist and chose this way to express his opinion of the importance of pharmacy in education and his admiration for the university profs tippetts and livermore authors of book business organization and con trol is the title of a new economic textbook just edited by doctor tip petts and mr livermore the book deals principally with the various methods of controlling business it is divided into three sections the first pertains to the various forms of busi ness organization another to com binations trusts and concentration of control the third section is concerned with the degree of business control and future policies d van nostrand of new york city publishes this seven hundred page textbook professor bidwell also of the eco nomics department of the university of buffalo is the author of an illu minating article which appears in the april 1932 quarterly review of for eign affairs his article is entitled trades tariff and depression dr t j holl of the university of buffalo zoology department was re cently honored by the publication of a paper the subject of which was the ecology of certain fishes and am phibians with special reference to their helminth and linguatulis parasites in the january 1932 edi tion of ecological monographs that the number of parasites increase with the age of the lake in which they are found was one interesting feature of the research s a stephens speaks at business conference an astonishingly close relationship between the well-being of the auto motive industry and that of the pub lic was bared at the march 22 busi ness conference in crosby hall by mr s a stephens of the stephens auto corporation long experience in this company which distributes auburn cars has given mr stephens a practical as well as theoretical background for authoritative opinions in this field one of the most amaz ing arrays of significant statistics to which university students have lis tened this year was the initial basis awards committee asks for lists of candidates a general call has been issued by the committee on awards to man agers of student organizations for lists of candidates for awards these lists should be compiled in consulta tion with the faculty adviser in each instance lists are to be submitted to the chairman of the awards com mittee elmer tropman not later than april bth the awards will be presented on moving-up day satur day mav 7th there has been a con stant feeling both in the s a c and student body that awards have been given out too promiscuously in the past the s a c must constantly guard the expenses of various activi ties in order to keep within their bud get the budget includes an item of 175.00 for awards the committee has been requested to keep this year's expenditure strictly within the budget following are the conditions under which awards may be made shingles the awarding of shingles shall be discontinued except in such instances as where candidates have completed two years of satisfactory service and will be at no time eligible for any other award s a c members — members of the s a c who have served faithfully in that capacity for a period of two years may upon recommendation of the president of the s a c and ap proval by the committee on awards be awarded a shingle keys publications — a key of suitable de sign may be awarded to the follow ing major members of the staff bee — editor managing editor business manager news editor sport editor circulation manager copy editor bison editor book member of the staff who has completed three years of faithful service and who is recom mended by the faculty advisor and approved by the committee on awards glee club on wgr the university of buffalo men's glee club announces two engage ments this coming week next sun day afternoon the club will broadcast over station wgr at 3 p m tues day the club will make an overnight trip to olean where they will sing before the chromatic club sophomores note at a recent meeting of the faculty of the college of arts and sciences it was voted that sophomores were expected to consult with the person nel office before making application for admission to the senior college or to professional schools sophomores are requested to make appointments with mr moran or miss fairbairn in the near future helen heinrich is new president of women's club at the regular meeting of women's club on wednesday march 30 the following officers were elected for the year 1932-1933 president helen heinrich of reception committee — joy colter the next meeting of women's club will be the faculty tea on thursday april 14 from 4:00 to 5:30 o'clock in the women's lounge the women's club vocational dinner will take place in may both the present and the newly elected officers will be in charge of arrangements dr farber makes dissertation before philosophical assn professor marvin farber of the university of buffalo read a paper on relational categories and the quest for unity at a meeting of the west ern division of the american philo sophical association on friday march 25 dr farber will also attend the other meetings of the association at ann arbor where he is to read his paper labies and gents the winners after much debate among the judges darvin de marchi matthew rose and robert gross the 1932 iris announces the winners of their snapshot contest the prize for con tributing the most pictures used in the yearbook is awarded to doris mackay a 1932 iris absolutely free dr scofield is the winner of a similar prize for the picture printed in the iris which is funniest in the opin ion of the judges the pictures.sub mitted were of such high class humor that the iris was forced to copy right the pictures in order to exclude the ballyhoo aw nertz hulla balloo and other such popular pub lications from using them but enough — subscribe to the iris and see for yourself advance order at that time ! rochester club proves a big hit unusual turnout of students greets rochester singers the university of rochester men's glee club was presented last wed nesday at convocation period before a large and appreciative audience of 400 students the rochester club winner of the state championship will represent the empire state next friday at the na tional contest in st louis their program presented in a flawless man ner won the admiration of the u b audience the following numbers were presented ye watchers and ve holy ones german carol football song—"cheer them for rochester alleluia amen handel billy boy sea chanty soloists carl lagler and richard bennett massachusetts low bridge arranged by fitch the voice with the smils wins a handel interpretation b bach interpretation c stravinsky interpretation high upon the hill rochester song the chant of the forty mercies the glee club was under the direc tion of theodore fitch the selection alleluia amen will be used as the rochester choice song at the national contest pharmacy school represented in n y meeting dean willis g gregory and pro fessor charles h gauger of the uni versity of buffalo school of pharmacy attended last week in new york the joint meeting of the state boards of pharmacy and the faculties of col leges of pharmacy from the states of new york new jersey pennsyl vania delaware maryland and the district of columbia problems of teaching testing and registering pharmacists and the re port of the committee on materia medica made up the major programs on monday evening the delegates were the dinner guests of the new york branch of the american phar maceutical association afterwards being entertained by the american druggist nominations for bison offices announced the
