next thursday * m desclos well known connoisseur of french art monsieur auguste v desclos will be the second lecturer brought to buf falo under the auspices of the fenton foundation his lecture on french painting in the last twenty-five years will be illustrated monsieur desclos is popular at all the colleges where he lectured on his previous tours in 1927 and 1928 this comment followed his last appearance here in 1928 we want m desclos at the uni versity of buffalo every year no one is more warmly received among our students apart from the author ity with which he treats all his sub jects his charm of manner is such as to leave an immediate and lasting impression on all who hear him no foreign lecturer whom we have ever had uses our language so beautifully and yet so colloquially m desclos is assistant director of the office national des universities at ecoles francaise and has for many years been in charge of the educa tional exchanges between england and france and since 1926 those be tween france and the united states he is a connoisseur of french art and an able and delightful lecturer upon art subjects the lecture will be held at the gros venor library on thursday december 11 at 8:15 p m girls in attempt to warm gymnasium this afternoon all freshman women will be the guests of the women's athletic asso ciation at the barn-warming pow wow this afternoon from two to five university women will become as lit tle children romping around in mid dies and shorts or in rompers play ing basketball picnicing on the old barn floor on jelly doughnuts and honey dew listening open mouthed to the anecdotes of the national athletic conference jollity and informality will reign as the upper classmen mem bers of w a a initiate the new women into what u b sportswomen consider a rip-roaring good time chief attraction the senior champs will play an exhibition tournament basketball game against a picked team of upper classmen g m f elections at a meeting of the g m f held thursday november 13th the follow ing officers for this year were elected president — edward ireland vice-president — charles little secretary — howard mcconkey treasurer — george miller what football has done for me now that the bandwagon and bal lyhoo of football has passed for an other year and the glory of games played has dimmed a serious con templation of the real benefits of foot ball is possible very few people are unblinded by the glamour of the game and are capable of seeing the educational benefits from it the value of the physical conditioning is easily dis cerned but football as an educational medium is overlooked by many education at best is a training in adjustment which enables a man to meet his problems in life intelligently and honorably the medium may be the arts and sciences or it may be the pigskin but it is adjustment nevertheless a lineman pulling out on offense or changing his style of play on defense a back running with the ball an interfering back are all adjusting themselves to a rapid pano rama of new situations which entail quick sharp thinking of a body in physical action thinking on your feet it is called and is an ability highly prized in the business world the quick decision of a lineman or of the quarterback in calling an im portant play is as rapid and as im portant to himself and to his team as any business executive's rapid and right thinking is to his concern not only must the adjustment be rapid but it must be in terms of ten other teammates co-ordination with others is team play and therein lies one of the educational gems of football modern collegiate education lays a heavy stress on individuality the student chooses his individual studies and pursues them in his individual way idiosyncrasies of temperament of character and we all have them i are allowed free run co-operation receives no mention has little signifi cance and this perhaps can account for the commercial failure of so many i brilliant students nowhere can a i student find the value of co-operation i m ore emphasized than in football xowhere are personal idiosyncrasies brought more quickly to the fore and ; nowhere must they be more regulated i or held more in control one of the l first and perhaps most valuable things ] a successful player must learn is the y —^— — —^ —^^^— _^^^^_ parison with team play in football as in no other activity must the in dividual desires and volitions be sub ordinated and co-ordinated to team play the majority of man's activi ties are social in character and this spirit of team play is a most valuable asset for a successful life the ability to judge men is also a common requisite to a successful com mercial or social career yet the grid iron is perhaps the one spot in four years of college life where this ability receives due acknowledgment a player must not only be able to esti mate and evaluate the men with whom he plays but must also be adept in the quick summation of the abilities of those men against whom he competes the football player re ceives an insight into the actions of men under mental and emotional strain which is the equivalent aca demically of many hours spent over the text books of psychology on the surface judged purely from the physical standpoint some acts of players do seem to be folly — men who play despite adversity and injury have you ever wondered just why men do these things why a player when he is badly battered injured and fatigued doesn't withdraw from the game or loaf and rest allowing the other ten men to carry on the battle ? simply because of a fidelity to that which the traditions and rules of the game have made a duty he is play ing the game this ability to play the game and live up to the duties imposed is man's one excuse for his existence and is his one claim to no < bility life after all is one gigantic game and he who plays it hard and honorably reaps the rewards of a sue ' cessful life the spirit of the game is something derived from the pigskin 1 which text books cannot give and were it possible for a man to ] play the game and not derive a single l one of these benefits the association alone with men of the calibre that i play and coach at the university i would more than repay any sacrifices 1 which the game entails mountaineers of south to be topic for honors group at 4:15 today mr robert parke comments third of the series of university radio talks broadcast over wgr sunday december 7 at 6:15 p m dr leary will conclude his discus sion on psychology with the topic the abnormal personality in his two previous talks he spoke on the general basis of psychology and psychology in relation to morals aes thetics and religion it is evident that these radio talks have found favor with the public al ready dr leary has received more than fifty letters of comment and re quests for stenciled copies of his lec tures the university of the air will be featured weekly during the winter and spring season it offers not only an education to the public but an ac quaintance with the university of buffalo and its faculty members harvard honor system compared with local group the first general meeting of the honors group held this year was opened by dr boynton the students upon being questioned by dr boynton unanimously agreed to continue these general meetings this year they promised to attend and to co-operate dr boynton then introduced pro fessor bigelow who gave the students an idea of how the honors system is organized and carried on at harvard his talk was most interesting he proved a very forceful and amusing speaker it seems that the honor's system as worked out at harvard is not very much unlike our own it is perhaps a little more thorough and severe briefly a student upon entering har vard as a freshman is assigned an advisor to help him choose his courses at the end of his first year he must decide in what field he wishes to specialize he then picks the pro gram
