the bee the greater university of buffalo weekly vol 11 university of buffalo november 7 1930 no 7 harvard double quartet is first convocation feature better features expected to draw larger turnouts the first convocation of the year for faculty and students will be held wednesday november 12 at 10:30 a m in edmund hayes hall audi torium the plan this year is to have fewer convocations which will be of the highest quality thus assuring the interest of the students and a full attendance bearing out this plan the commit tee has secured a program for next week which should bring the enthusi astic approval of the members of the university this program will feature the university double quartet of the harvard glee club this double quartet is directed by douglas a mackinnon and includes a selection of both present and for mer members of the harvard glee club which is known as one of the best collegiate musical organizations in the country this is the first time that buf falonians will have had the pleasure of listening to this excellent organ ization in fact it is the first time they have traveled as far west as buf falo included in the tour they are making between november 8 and 12 are reservations at the emma willard german students enjoy talks and music at meeting the first meeting of the german club was held on wednesday evening october 29 1930 in the women's lounge in hayes hall mr scenna the new instructor in german gave a very entertaining talk on his im pressions of modern germany miss norma thorden an accomplished stu dent violinist rendered several selec tions some of which were simple aven thome berceuse from joselyn godard old refrain kreisler the officers of the club were intro duced at this meeting they are president cynthia f banks vice president mildred beitz treasurer jeanette traudt secretary john scummer very entertaining programs have been planned for the ensuing year chancellor capen attends session of a a c in new york chancellor capen is at present at tending a meeting of the executive committee of the association of american colleges in new york he will also be present at the meeting of the committee on the grading of nursing schools at briarcliff manor sophs entertain frosh tomorrow at annual hop everyone seems to be going to the annual freshman-sophomore dance the few who don't will certainly miss a large time in a big bob morran president of the fresh man class will furnish the syncopa tion with his blue rhythm boys the hopping will be performed at the grover cleveland club house tomorrow night between nine and one by the ding-dong in hayes tower a little warning is enough to make every he man arrive early for a good parking spot — that good parking places are rare is well known one act plays to be dramatized enthusiasts of dramatics will wel come blue masquers hour which will be devoted to the presentation of one act plays during the convocation per iod on wednesdays a committee has been appointed to select and cast the plays and these will be presented in the near future the next meeting of the blue mas quers will be in the women's lounge on thursday evening november 13 at 8:00 p m commerce sorority formed to aid business students dance and tea among social events planned for some time a number of persons | have felt that a commerce sorority would be a great asset to the women students of the university and that such an organization would meet many needs of women who are pre paring for the field of business to meet these needs a group of students considered the matter of organizing a sorority last spring in may 1930 phi alpha epsilon was organized the officers are president — beatrice weiskopf vice-president — margaret fraser secretary — helen marquis treasurer — miriam personnel officials association which wa's held at oberlin last week among the delegates who came from 45 colleges throughout the united states were dr jones of u b dr toops of ohio state dean clothier of pittsburgh miss blake of smith college and dr estabrook of colgate a new idea was introduced by dr toops who is planning the testing of all high school pupils of ohio with tests similar to those used in the col leges miss blake gave a report of the fine personnel work that is being carried out at smith dr jones paper dealt with the technique of in out-of-town girls to be entertained by cap and gown cap and gown the senior women's honorary society has held regular meetings the second and fourth wed nesday of every month at noon in the women's lounge the organization is ambitiously planning for a full year of activity , one of their plans to entertain the out-of-town girls of the university at ; a tea will be realized on wednesday 1 november 12 at 4:00 p m in the 1 lounge all out-of-town women stu > dents of the university are cordially ( invited to take advantage of this op j portunity of becoming acquainted , three directory heads are chosen at last meeting at the last meeting of the candi dates for the directory the new uni versity publication the editor busi ness manager and circulation man ager were elected richard peter won the honor of being editor with janet buchwald as business manager and dorothy spar burg as circulation manager h maisel s gilman e cohen g silverberg e geisler e leone r frank w schamel b townsenn m morton k hill m lichtblau b donovan v willis n walsh and j mensonides are candidates for the staff and the positions not yet filled there are still many good positions open and the students are urged to hand in their applications as everyone has a good chance of filling the va cancies professors chambers and pratt to address international relations club on pan-americanism one of the most extraordinary pro grams ever to be presented to a uni versity of buffalo organization is scheduled for next thursday novem ber 13 at 8 p m when dr chambers and dr pratt will both speak on the same topic before the interna tional relations club their subject will be pan-americanism the place of the meeting will be announced early next week via the hayes hall bulletin board the topic pan-americanism in direct contrast with the topic of the last meeting pro-americanism bears out the policy of the club to that effect pan-americanism is a subject on which the attention of the world is concentrated today particu larly because of the recent uprisings in some south american countries because of the general unrest in south america and because of the political and economic situations in such coun tries as haiti and nicaragua the fact that two university pro fessors will talk on the same subject from different angles and standpoints is unique but it gibes with the aim of the international relations club to present to its members not only in structive and helpful but interesting and attractive programs all students and faculty members in the government history and eco nomics departments as well as all others interested are invited to at tend each club member will be the recipient of the latest carnegie bul letin recounting the history of the world for the past fortnight miss ward traces origin of styles for women's club at the women's club luncheon on wednesday miss medora ward fash ion co-ordinator at flint & kent co gave a second talk on clothes her subject was the high spots of to day's fashion she traced the origin of present day styles to the native costumes of ' foreign countries the russian cos sack uniform with its nipped-in waist line and flared skirt set the pace for daytime fashions dominant for for mal evening attire are the smooth flowing dignified lines of old grecian garb for the benefit of those who desire chicness in dress miss ward inter preted the decree of dame fashion as follows the dress will be shortest in the early part of the day and will gradually grow longer till evening when its grecian folds must reach the tips of high-heeled grecian sandels season's end hop rings death knell for king football supreme efforts are being exerted to make the season's end dance one of the greatest affairs of the fall the hobart and buffalo football teams the varsity coaching staff and the faculty of the school of business administration will be guests of honor music and entertainment will be furnished by les thellemann's blue blasters and marge mason the blue's crooner miss mason a ravishing brunette formerly appeared on the boulevard stop signs is topic at psych convention dr d b leary presided over the conference of upper new york state psychologists that was held at the university of buffalo last week dr allport of syracuse read a very interesting paper on the institu tional curve the result of experi ments concerning the number of peo . pie who stopped at boulevard stop ' signs those who slowed down and those who failed to slow down at all the graph of the data collected dur ing these experiments is j shaped in contrast with the usual bell shaped curve that results from other psycho logical data the idea of establishing a central placement office in new york city for the service of upper new york state graduates was discussed but no de cision was reached because of the difficulties of apportioning the ex penses of such a project > bison gridders face upsala at rotary field tomorrow ward and beyers return increases team's strength after a spirited showing against the strong rochester eleven last sat urday at rochester the university of buffalo football team is prepared to meet the widely heralded team from upsala new jersey biffy lee has been putting his team through strenu ous practice during the past week in anticipation of avenging last year's defeat of 14-7 at the hands of up sala with beyer and ward buffalo's plunging backs reinstated in the line up after an absence of several weeks the hopes of victory for the blue and white are well founded upsala has been victorious only once so far this year but scored a tremendous moral victory in holding the powerful rider team to a 0^0 tie the local u b - canisius talk will get a further airing this week end when canisius engages rider at the villa the outcome of this game and the u b.-upsala contest will af ford a profitable comparison to the unconsiderable agitators of this city upsala lost 74-0 to lafayette 35-0 to c c n y and 13-0 to long island whom buffalo beat 12-0 last year the games that u b have lost have been played on foreign fields while every game that upsala has g m f elections to be held nov 12 frosh must appear the g m f will hold elections of officers on next thursday november 13 in the auditorium of e h h at 12:20 the upper class members of the organization are requested to at tend to insure their places in this section all freshmen must be pres ent for the g m f was originally founded to teach the yearlings the cheers and songs of the university and to help instill the prevalent spirit of the school in them the student council and the frosh jury are co operating with the officers of the g m f and are assuring the complete attendance of the freshman class several vacancies still exist in the personnel of the rowleaders and it is expected that members of the fresh man class will qualify for these the following men have been elect ed rowleaders for the ensuing year james hopkins stephen pieri how ard mcconkey stewart tuck clifford jones arnold gabbey christopher scaltsas francis macano and george miller the other vacancies are al lotted to the eligible members of the freshman class the above men are urged to have their men there on time roll of the freshman class will be called and absentees will come un der the jurisdiction of the frosh jury preparations are being made for the organization of a school band for the hobart game all students in terested in band work should try to attend this meeting math club elects all girl officers for current year on tuesday evening of this week miss montague gave a very clever re view of the novel flatland by a square before the math club the inhabitants of this spacial concept people of two dimensions were por trayed in a realistic manner the election of officers for the com ing year was held they are as fol lows president margaret morgan vice-president fern ryder secretary margaret gould and treasurer mar guerite habicht the next meeting will be held on tuesday evening december 2 at 8 o'clock in the women's lounge feminine debaters to meet orators from the midwest the women's debating club an nounces that three of its members edna geissler muriel maclean and gertrude stanley have been chosen to represent the university of buffalo in a series of debates with teams from midwestern colleges arrangements have been completed for debates with purdue and northwestern further negotiations are being conducted with other schools training school for nurses added to the university fifty students t have enrolled in the new school the new department of the univer sity is now an established fact about 50 students are already enrolled in the training school for nurses which involves a close association between the medical school and the buffalo city hospital this department is under the general supervision of the board of managers and the superin tendent of the hospital and the chancellor of the university and under the active direction of the dean of the medical school and the super intendent of nurses at the hospital it is set up so that a pupil at the end of three years will be eligible for classification as a registered nurse in the state of new york nurse grad uates are qualified to take up full time study at the university for one and one-half years at the end of this time they will be eligible for the de gree of bachelor of science in nursing «. while a college degree may be earned in this way in four and one half years this does not mean that the course has been skimped in any way by adopting the four-quarter plan which means working the year round with only a short vacation term it has been possible to cover the work of five ordinary college years into four and one-half calendar years this four-quarter plan is also in effect now in the school of dentistry of this university student papers to be read at philosophy club the second meeting of the philos ophy club is announced for tuesday evening november 11th at 8:00 o'clock in the women's
