ning child — a shout — the screech of brakes — and another small body is maimed — a possible crip ple for life yes spring has ar rived and no one welcomes it more than the children to whom it means a chance to play out of doors m the bright sunshine it is also true that city children must play near the street — that they do<not think of the car that may be coming down that street nor do they real ize the danger under the slogan u b care ful and m an effort to assist the campaign initiated by the courier express at the beginning of this week the u b vets club is m the process of placing posters around the campus they contain patheti cally realistic pictures similiar to the one here of the many juvenile victims of recent automobile acci dents with notations of their in juries the police department re ports the appaling statistics that these accidents are occuring at • rate of three four and even seven times a day were it not for the fact that the precious life of a child is involved the reports would be monotonous the child did not think the motorist was not watch ing the children pictured on these posters are typical of hundreds of others the posters should serve as a stimulus to awaken every person who has ever operated an automobile the vets club has undertaken this campaign m the hope that x will effectively remind all collegi ate drives of the responsibility they assume when they step be hind the wheel of a car they must be on the lookout for young children who can not look out for themselves in addition to these posters the club has sent letters and literature to every recognized organization on campus m the hope that they also will be sufficiently interested m the welfare of buf falo's children to promote this or sade bev smith vies with elements on moving-up day beverly smith was elected queen but jupiter pluvius reigned all through the moving-up day of sat urday last in fact the weather was voted the element most nearly out i this world by the judges those t the floats which survived the torturous path to campus warmed the hearts of the several thousand soggy spectators who peeked out of windows and sadly shook their heads m amazement the pem club outdid itself trying the keep warm by leaping to great heights on their trampoline however they managed to succeed m cap turing the grand float award and first place among the schools and organizations sigma kappa capped the sororities with their ocean fantasy and fell second to pem'a extravaganza in third place was san who won thi fra ternity competition with a float portraying alice m wonderland other winers were schools and organizations 2nd prize vets club 3rd independents fraterni ties 2»d kappa delta psi 3rd omega phi delta sororities 2nd alpha gamma delta 3rd theta chi individuals ist richard dunning 2nd lois c ward robert glass student marshall wishes to thank all those who aid ed m making the parade a suc cess m spite of the adverse con ditions james mckay six both legs broken listeners commend college radio show by ray white successfully meeting the acid tests of its trial period campus on the air has now reached firm i noting as an established radio pro ram and with the favorable re ponses of an ever growing audi dee of listeners it has proven that tudent apathy m campus affairs an be abolished a brainchild of two university t buffalo students irv haag and lilt schaeffer the program be anie a reality when station . wxra kenmore n y received and accepted their proposal to rite direct and produce a show fiat would cater to college stu nts since the program's incep on 8 weeks ago the undergrad ite bodies of canlsius state eachers and u b have been urg ed by poster and word of mouth advertising to tune to ten-eight oh on saturdays at 11:00 a.m and also to tarn m any news they might have of their respective campuses designed to foster promote and further true college spirit campus en the air and its originators have refused to give m to the in difference such as often stifles a ymca fund campaign now in progress here public reaction to the 96th an niversary fund campaign of the buffalo ymca now in progress shows the y to be considered as a family organization — with a program of recreation fellowship education and health for the entire family — dad and mother brother and sister speaking for the 1,000 solicitors — the current volunteer army seek ing g05,440 for building repair and program expansions to meet cur rent ymca needs in buffalo — general chairman prank w tin die pointed to what he termed the real selling points of the ymca program to thousands of buffalo families as reported by campaign workers in addition to the general branch activities are ymca vocational and business courses taught in the downtown y branch here basic courses in business subjects and modern foreign languages give the student highlight facts ot the class subjects especially popular have been the oi-approved radio insti tute courses and the elementary business sessions many of which graduates have been placed in well-paying positions last year 702 men and women nearly equal in number availed themselves of y courses which emphasized the practical aspects of the fields taught contributions may be sent to the ymca campaign headquarters 45 west mohawk street buffalo new york the campaign ends june 2 . draftees denied educational aid the proposed selective service bill now before the congress of the united states at this date contains no provision for educa tional benefits to men who will be drafted many of those in the 19-2s age group affected will have their col lege training interrupted for such service the students committee for educational benefits of the uni versity of connecticut feel that they should reoeive government aid to complete the interrupted educa tion and further that such aid should be extended to qualified men who at present are unable to afford the cost of higher educa tion their case is based on the fact that similar benefits were given to men enlisting or drafted into the armed forces up to 15 months aft er the cessation of hostilities mon ey spent for legitimate education is a sound investment in the fu ture of our country the committee urges all inter ested students and citizents to con tact their c pressmen at once they also request interested stu dents or student committees to contact of the western district of the new york state n.s.a has announced that this division ox the students organization will hold a dance on october 16 1948 at mem orial auditorium the dance will feature a name band and more entertainers to be announced at the beginning of next semester as a highlight of this dance which will fall on the night of the u b - alfred game a queen and king of football for western new york will be crown ed paul dehlinger of u b who is acting as co-chairman of the dance has reported that special busses will run from civic stadium to memorial auditorium for the con venience of persons wishing to go directly from the game to the dunce the western district of the new york state n.s.a is composed of niagara university canisius col lege buffalo state teachers col lege st bonaventure college d youville college new york state school of applied science fre donia state teachers brockport tate teachers and the university rf buffalo this dance will be one of the so cial highlights of the fall season and further news of it should be eagerly awaited by all students in all of the schools in the western district bisonhead to elect officers at dinner bisonhead the
