the bee i z-460 yolume 28 g^>m buffalo n y friday may 7 1948 number 27 class election enthusiasm stifled by queen campaign dora bertoglio attendant •> beneath the loud and general confusion that came with this year's moring-up day queen elec tions a few of the more serious minded students went to the poles in norton union and the engineer ing building to elect class officers for the various schools when the , eturng were compiled it wag found that out of the 120 candidates for office the following had been elect ed in the school of arts and sci ences for the senior class rob ert marshall president lee ram sey vice president joe hanssel secretary robert glass treasur er the race for president between robert marshall and ken malick wag especially close with but three votes separating the two the junior class of arts and sciences pulled the heaviest vote of any clagg in any school which resulted in the election of thomas r hinckley pregident raymond white vice pregident john starr secretary a»u mary ann velgel treasurer the sophomore class officers were elected by the smallest vote in arts and sciences edward mehl wag elected president rich ard kane vice pregident alice bartlett secretary and jack ryan treagurer naacp elects berkley as 1948-49 president kat a meeting in the west room norton hall last tuesday eve ning the university of buffalo campus chapter of the national association for the advancement ot colored people heard a brief re view of the local regional and na tional objectives of the organiza tion from temporary chairman fred barkley before proceeding to it business meeting the main busi ness of which was the nomination oml election of officers and stand ing committee heads when the resultg were tabulat ed fred barkley had been elected preaident for the coming year with donald wildy as vice-preaident marcia wooster as secretary and donald grant as treasurer elected to join him on the executive board chairmen for three standing committees were also chosen herb lenine is taking charge of the labor and industry committee iwlnfield hurley and paul flierl jointly handling press and publlc • ky and dick dunning is chairing the program and research com mittee the next meeting which will be the final meeting of the current tear will be held tuesday evening may 18 at 7:30 p.m in norton hall judge panel includes ub english instructor a short story contest for cath olic women's colleges will be held fa the near future under the spon sorship of the buffalo chapter of kappa gamma pi sorority general chairman gertrude r mcgee has announced mr marius risley an instructor ** english at the university of buffalo will assist dr charley brady professor of english at ca fttsius college and the rev har old c gardiner editor of the na tional magazine america in judg es the contestants hansen and fried in wallace debate in a meeting of the political is sues club last wednesday after noon marty fried condemned and gunner hansen upheld the cause of henry wallace the debate was held to stimu late discussion on the topic pro and con of h wallace speak ing first m fried registered dis gust with the potential candidates and their parties but warned those who would accept mr wallace's panacea that it is a false third choice stressing the inertia of mr wallace during his 13 years of public office mr fried suggested that the banner of freedom has been picked up only as a pole with which the third party may vault to the desired heights he exploded the myth that his wallace's fight against the southern bloc led to his defeat in the 1944 nominations the fact of the matter is he as serted that roosevelt gave wal lace only a lukewarm endorse ment his speech was given only after the entire convention knew he was defeated mr fried also charged that mr wallace's posi tion on foreign policy has under gone no fundamental change and that before world war ii wallace attention graduates commencement . announce ments must be ordered by all graduates either at norton counter or at the bursar's of fice room 135 e h h price eight cents may 13 is the deadline city-wide support of campus holiday promised by mayor the daring theme out of this world seems to depict precisely the general campus opinion of the movlng-tjp"day celebration to be held tomorrow the annual univer sity holiday which traditionally is issued an official proclamation from the mayor announcing city wide support this year has been under the capable management of general chairman edward an drews and his secretary christine punnetl the day's activities will com mence at 10:00 a.m with a par ade assembling at main and ex change streets and proceeding down main to the university campus twenty-seven campus or ganizations have registered for par ticipation with floats representing this year's theme leading the en tire procession will be judges grand marshall robert g class escorting the recently - elected queen with her two attendants and members of the moving-up day committee from the reviewing stand on the library stepg the floats will be judged primarily on the basis of originality and prizes will be pre sented during fhe noon convocation at clark memorial gymnasium student activities awards for the past year will also be presented at this time immediately following the con queen beverly smith house conun makes book exchange plans the norton union house com mittee has announced a plan for the exchange of books for summer school only books used in sum mer school courses will be accept ed a list ot these books will be published before registration day june 11 a charge of ten cents will be levied against seller for example if a student wishes to sell a book for 4.60 he will re ceive 4.40 the book exchange will be in operation through the first week of summer schools and will also be carried on in the tall se mester ' eta mu pi chapter established at ub recently the business adminis tration school had the honor of welcoming a new honorary schol astic fraternity into its midst tho kappa chapter of eta mu pi hon orary retailing fraternity was es tablished last week eta mu pi means the ethics and science of retailing the university of buffalo is one of 9 schools in the country offer ing a retailing program aiming to ward a degree throughout col leges and universities in the united states there are only 10 other chapters of eta mu pi and u b feels proud of the honor bestowed on them the national grand chapter was first established at new york uni versity for both graduate and un dergraduate students the u b charter for the fraternity is on its way from new york city the newly formed u b chapter will be selected by the active mem bers and the faculty advisor from this year's graduates and another class will be chosen in september from the retailing class beginning their senior year attention graduates graduation fee 10.00 must be paid by non-veteran stu dents before saturday may 15 at bursar's office room 135 , edmund hayes hall beverly smith wins crown publicity campaigns fail election returns received wed uesday night proved conclusively that publicity isn't everything as beverly smith sponsored by sig ma kappa sorority and sigma al pha nu fraternity was elected moving-up day queen in spite of the spectacular campaigns waged on behalf of some of her oppon eutg that publicity does have itg uses wag indicated by the fact that dora bertoglio sponsored by theta chi sorority and beta chi ep sllon fraternity and doris ewart sponsored by kappa delta psi fra ternity received the nod from some 1601 voters to become the queen's attendants queen bev's election culminated an extravaganza of showmanship the like of which this campus has never before beheld besides the usual clutter of picture posters and slingers and the time-worn word-of-mouth campaign the spon soring groups and their affiliates really went out of this world in the publicity for their respective candidates for a while it seemed as if moving-up day had really moved up and that someone had imported the big brass band from brazil beta chi epstlon came out with their campaigning cavalcade of convertibles while kappa delta psi drove their horse and surrey with the fringe on top wildly across the campus with the aforesaid results in addition some doris ewart attendant church rally features famed chinese leader dr t z koo one of the out standing leaders of china will be in buffalo for a great student ral ly in trinity episcopal church 371 delaware avenue on sunday after noon may 16 at 4 o'clock dr koo was the advisor to the chinese delegation at the san francisco conference in 1945 in 192g he wag a member of the sec ond world opium conference in geneva switzerland for a score of years he has been an officer or secretary of the world's student christian federation he is one of the best known college speakers in the world and hag led students groups in many lands dr koo'g coming to buffalo is made possible by the student work committee of the council of churches and is under the auspices of the credo club of the univer sity of buffalo and the student christian associations of state teachers college and the new york state institute of applied arts and sciences all students and faculty mem bers of the university of buffalo are cordially invited to attend this rally honorary frat elects plans future program rho pi phi international drug fraternity hold its final meet ing of the semester in hotel buf falo and the following officers were olected for the coming year pres ident karl gerst vice-president sol stone secretary -
