students asso ciation last wednesday night at the university of buffalo the dele gates of the u of b canisius col lege d'youville college st bona venture college state teachers and niagara university agree that an interchange of student ideas and programs would be a means of combating student apathy and in tercollegiate misunderstanding to begin this plan of interchange of student activity meyer abgott dis trict chairman of nsa appointed james p tippett of u of b and james mcneill of canisius to draw up a plan of area intercollegiate debating contests another com mittee was formed to formulate plans for the autumn intercollegi pictured is mayor bernard j dowd seated handing the proclamation for moving-up day to col b g schutkeker left the honorary grand marshal of the parade with robert g glass and edward g andrews right of the moving-up day committee looking on issues club hears prof adams speak on italian election e recent election in italy was ic of discussion at the meet he political issues club last jday the speaker was pro fessor adams of the history de partment at u b who was for three years a members of the u s ismbaassy in italy professor adams emphasized italy's important position in world affairs today pointing out that she is the next largest democracy in the world to the united states ex cluding china she is also the largest and strongest independent country in europe the speaker went on to say con cerning the election in italy on april 18 that there was never any danger that italy would go com munist it would be virtually im possible because the majority of the people do not want the dis cipline of communism he further efated that although the roman catholic church was quite certain of its victory as its philosophy is the bulwark against oommunlism the catholic party needed political unity and a great deal of power to combat the communistic forces that were so prevalent in italy's in dustrial centers an open discussion of the elec tions followed dr adams talk cio director stresses scientific manogement john thorton chairman of the newly organized ii b student so ciety or advancement of manage ment announced this week that joseph p molony director of dis trict no 4 united steel workers c i o will speak at the first dis cussion meeting of the society this meeting will be held monday may 3 at the university v f w post 742 delaware avenue near summer at 8:00 p.m mr molony will speak on the subject labor's attitude toward scientific man agement this is the first of a scheduled series oe discussions which will at tempt to answer questions of para mount interest to every future leader in business and industry such questions as the following will be discussed 1 how may the worker obtajn the feeling of security which is of prime importance to him 2 how can labor turnover be 3 by what means may the em ployer and the employee gain mu tual confidence all members of the faculty and students especially those in the business and engineering schools are invited to attend and bring their friends to hear this discus sion of a most important current club states rules for cleaner city the buffalo federation o f women's clubs is continuing its long range program for a cleaner buffalo this program has been en dorsed by the buffalo chamber of commerce and the city planning association the points to be covered in the program are as follows first help to keep your own premises free of paper and litter ot all kinds second pledge yourselveb never to throw paper refuse and/or oth er litter on the sidewalks streets or country roads this includes wrappers from candy gum ice cream suckers etc picnic plates napkins and any waste material no matter how small third broken glass on the streets and sidewalks is a hazard to motorists and pedestrians alike be careful not to drop softdrlnk bottles or any glass container if glass is broken accidentally be sure that it is removed and placed in a proper receptlcle fourth pledge yourselves nev er to deface public buildings or equipment by marking or damag ing them in any way i fifth consider yourselves a part of this city-wide effort to im prove the appearance of your own city and to enlist the help of your friends relatives and others in this worthwhile project which will ben the federation is pursuing this program in the belief that it is to the interest of every citizen of buffalo to participate sophomores friday may 7 at 3:30 all sophomores and any other stu dents who have not yet been admitted to tutorial status are invited to a meeting in hayes auditorium for a discussion of the tutorial system all those who have not yet applied for tutorial status should attend also any others who may have questions mayor proclaims moving-up day last tuesday at the city hall mayor bernard j dowd signed a proclamation officially designating may 8 as u b.'s movlng-up day the city of buffalo as in the past is backing the university in sup porting the various activities of their annual moving-up day the following is the proclamation issued by the mayor • whkrhws thevstudentg of the university of buffalo will observe their annual moving-up day and hold open house on satur day may 8th 1948 and whereas their program will begin that morning according to custom with the traditional moving up parade from the terrace to the campus and the program will continue throughout the afternoon and evening with a series of sporting events dances and special con vocations as well as the crowning of the queen of the may and whereas the university of buffalo is our largest institution of higher learning and has rendered service for more than a hundred years not only to this community but to a large section of our state and na tion and whereas this movlng-ui day has as its theme out of this world and whereas the city of buffalo takes great pride in the university and its rapid growth and achievement now therefore i bernard j dowd mayor of the city of buffalo do hereby proclaim that it is fitting and appropriate that our citizens demonstrate that buffalo is the the city of good neighbors and that they show their pride in the university of buffalo by participat ing in this diversified program which should be of general city-wide interest bernard j dowd mayor of buffalo tea in west room for senior women ushering in senior week for senior women the university of buffalo alumnae association will sponsor the second annual tea the purpose of this tea is to honor the women graduates of the alum nae association the president of which is mrs louis g norton jean ackerman president of the senior class will be in the receiv ing line as well as rita morlock chairman of the tea and mrs nor ton assistant chairman the tea will take place in the west room of norton hall on sun day may 2 from 3:oo to 6:00 p.m the association is anxious to meet the women graduates and it is hop ed that they will all be present dr frederick allen to speak in townsend a lecture on aggression in the development of the child will be delivered by dr frederick h al len director of the philadelphia child guidance clinic in town send hall of the university of buf falo saturday at 8 p.m the lec ture sponsored by the george dav is bivln foundation of cleveland and the u b school of social work is designed especially for social workers clinical psycholo gists teachers psychiatrists and students in social work medicine nursing sociology psychology and excitement prevails as deadline nears for moving-up day w ■v one week from tomorrow at 10:00 a.m saturday may 8 the annual movlng-up day will begin with a parade through downtown buffalo all organizations are ex pected to participate with floats de picting the theme out of this | world leading the procession will be the judges grand marshall . the queen and her attendants and the members of the committee the floats will be judged from the library steps and prizes will in presented at the convocation at noon in the gymnasium also at the convocation awards for stu dent activities will be made following the convocation is the queen's luncheon in the banquet room of norton for members of the committee judges and other dignitaries the annual moving-up day foot ball game will be btaged by two 1 i . b teams at 2:30 p.m at rotary field there you will see a pre view of next year's squad also at that time the tryouts for next year's group of cheerleaders will be held at 4:00 the tea dance will be gin in the lobby of norton to th . music of tommle rlzzo's orches dr osborn conducts religious symposium a symposuim on religious ex perience and professional prac tice will be sponsored by the schools of medicine nursing and social work of the university of buffalo on sunday may 2 from 3:30 to 9:00 p.m in the nurses home of meyer memorial hospital religious faith and practice in the experience of the patient and the client will be discussed in the afternoon by dr charles d bauer dr stephen m clement and dr harold j levy with dr leslie a osborn professor of psychiatry at 11 8 as moderator religious experience and obli gations from the standpoint of tha professional practitioner will be discussed in the evening by a pan el of clergymen and physicians rep resenting the three major faiths debators honor outstanding men the membership of the debating society has recognized as its threa outstanding members or the first year of its organization hilary p pradford james l tippett and hugh crean these men have guid ed the organization from its in fancy to an efficient organization intent on definitely establishing the society as a permanent activity plans are under way whereby the society will take the initiative in forming an inter-collegiate debate
