consider the psychology dept completes survey of outside work during the past few months the psychology department has been making some interesting and signifi cant investigations in regard to th work done by students outside 0 school the inquiry at the basis o this research is whether outside worl has any effect on scholarship at the same time it is being determine whether the work the student is per forming is of any professional valu or merely of routine nature that wil l>e of mi value to him in his futurt profession the various schools of tht univers ity of buffalo have produced some startling results the percentage at the arts college is especially astound ing it is a fact that 91 of the arts men do regular outside work amounting to an average of hi hours a week — as much time as is spent in classes 4195 of the freshmen and sophomore groups average from 19 to 21 hours of outside work weekly in comparison with this 66 of the juniors and seniors are working it is rather a startling fact to find so many juniors and seniors engaged in work at the time when they should be doing the most studying in their college careers the most plausible explanation of this fact is the yearly raise in tuition which has been going into effect for several years thus a student who started college with the tuition at 200 finds it quite necessary by his senior year to do considerable outside work to acquire 350 the pharmacy school similarly shows a large number working — though here the training is largely professional 75 ; are working at the amazing average of 28 hours a week there is one student who spends 60 hours in outside work i;v . of these pharmics work in drug stores and are getting actual practice that will be of help to them later cm at the same time they are
