night m the music room of norton union a number of im portant issues concerning the school and the students were dis cussed the main topic dealt with was an amendment to the constitution concerning elections the main control of which will be announced later next a number of appointments of students were made to head various committees the following announcements are to be made moving up day chairman edward andrews norton union key awards chairman avery smith convocation chairman marie in terbitzen program committee of norton union chairman myra jordan and alpha phi omega boy scout honorary fraternity were made guides for acquaintance day m april president leeland jones voted for the first time this year due to a tie vote during these elec tions the dates for the elections to the board of managers were set as the 16th and 17th of march and though the exact date for the elec tion of class officers or student council was not set it was dis closed that it will be sometime m april the last point covered was the decision to enter a candidate for queen of the amateur hockey league the tournament will be held m memorial auditorium ivfarch 18 19 and 20 under the auspices of the buffalo junior chamber of commerce major schools from all over the country will participate m this tournament the university of buffalo candi date for queen will be by popular vote after the sophomore student council appoints a committee to decide how the election will be made queen candidates from other colleges and universities will be present at the tournament and the queen will be elected by judges sometimes during the tournament author f l lewis at annual mid-term commencement frederick lewis allen distin guished author and editor will be the speaker at the university of buffalo's annual mid-year com mencement monday morning feb ruary 23 m kleinhans music hall chancellor samuel p capen an nounced today mr allen editor of harper's magazine will speak on how to remain educated he is the author of only yes terday an informal history of the 19205 which was a book-of-the month club choice and a best seller the lords of creation a financial history of the u.s.a bince 1900 and since yesterday a volume on the 1930's m america he has also collaborated with his wife agnes rogers on three books of pictures-and-text : the ameri can procession metropolis and the current best-seller i remem ber distinctly a family album of the american people m the years cf peace 1918-1941 born m boston m 1890 mr al len received a bachelor's degree from harvard m 1912 and a mas ter's degree m 1913 he served on the editorial staff of the atlantic monthly and century magazine served four years as secretary to the harvard corporation and join ed the staff of harper's magazine m 1923 he has remained there since becoming associate editor in 1931 and editor-in-chief m 1941 he also is vice-president of harper nil brothers the publishing com pany which produces the maga tioe u b red cross gives march of dimes show a march of dimes benefit show will be presented at u b tuesday march 2 at 8:00 p.m under the auspices of the u b red cross en tertainment troup this will offer the student body a chance to see the show which has been presented at veterans hospitals during the past year the entertainment will consist f a musical and variety show fea turing members of the student body the curly-haired crippled child featured on this year's march f dimes poster will be your host won't you help make his party a sviccess reading clinic opens an announcement from the per sonnel office discloses that the personnel office reading clinic will carry on again this semester the time is tuesday and thursday from 2:30 p.m to 3:30 p.m all of those students who are in terested are asked to sign up now m the personnel office the first session will begin this tuesday feb 24 at 2:30 p.m all students are invited to join for further information check with the per sonnel office m hayes hall students given last chance to take exam for health record in a recent letter to director dorothy haas ot norton union chancellor samuel capen stated a considerable number of stu dents failed to meet their assign ments for health examinations and x-ray examinations the annual health examination is required by the council because of the diffi culties created by the large campus enrollment the dean's council be lieved that the delinquent students should be given another chance to report for physical examinations before the penalty of suspension is invoked examination dates have been set and are as follows health examination dates march 10 11 and 12 x-ray examination date march 12 all of the officers of the univer sity feel that the opportunity to have as complete examinations as these is something that the stu dents should appreciate they are eager that active student co-opera tion be secured so that the imposi tion of a penalty for falling to meet the examination appointments will be a very rare occurence new talent contest announced to co-eds as has been their custom in the past the editors of mademoiselle magazine for women have an nounced their annual college tal ent search the contest is open to women undergraduates only and all entries must be postmarked no later than midnight april 15 1948 the requirements are length — 3,000 to 5,000 words porm't — typewritten double spaced one side of your paper only enclose your name home address college address and college year plainly with the manuscript eligibility — any story which has appeared m a college publica tion is acceptable if it has not been published elsewhere reward — to see your name m a large publication that has print ed stories written by co-eds from vassar cornell wellesley and many other colleges to per haps sign a contract with a pub lisher many of whom due to an interest m perspective writers look forward to this contest to win one of the two 500.00 prizes as you can see the rules are simple and several of the stories which have been reprinted have been the author's flrst-published work students are aided by nine conferences offered on campus in view of the large number reg istered m the various schools of the university the personnel of fice will conduct a series of voca tional conferences to aid students m solving their respective prob lems this second annual series will be held m february and march there will be nine confer ences m all including medicine law dentistry selling journal ism accounting social service business administration and per sonnel and industrial relations the meetings begin feb 20th and will continue each wednesday and friday afternoons at 3:30 p.m with the limitations on space individuals must register m ad vance at the personnel office hayes 192 and only those who have signed up for each confer ence will be admitted norton un ion auditorium has been tentative ly selected for the discussion competent speakers on each sub ject will describe the openings m their respective fields the required if vein of academic preparation and the trends and future possibilities m their own sphere a complete schedule of time date and place for each conference has been post ed in the director's office of nor ton union ub's tommie rizzo to play for prom charm queen to be elected at annual junior affair ou saturday night march 6 1948 the twenty-seventh annual junior prom will be held m the main ballroom of the hotel statler music will be provided by tommie rizzo and his fifteen piece orchestra together with a small combo the name of which has not as yet been released dancing will be continuous from 10:30 p.m until 3:30 a.m formal attire required > tickets will go on sale for the price of 4.80 per couple m the board of managers office begin ning mon fell 23 from 11:30 a.m to 1:30 p.m only and will con tinue through next week those who wish to purchase tickets are advised to buy them early as the number is limited to only five hun dred they are not expected to last long so make certain you purchase youra before they are all gone cash sales only will he accepted publicity has already beguh for prom queen the various organiza tions on campus have placed pic tures of their candidates on the bulletin bourds around campus elections to choose the leading five aspirants for queen will be held m the west room of norton union on monday march 1 from 9:30 a.m to 4:00 p.m ralph brown is handling these arrange ments and the five highest will bs judged again the night before the prom by a carefully selected com mittee of impartial judges the winner will be announced at mid night the night of the prom when voting on march 1 students must present their norton union card to be eligible tommie rizzo's band guarantees to provide excellent music to suit all tastes many of you have heard him play at the delwood dance and also at various func tions held through the school proceeds from the dance will go toward providing income for a scholarship fund for needy stu dents outing committee note sunday february 22 is u b day of amateur hockey at memorial auditorium u b mavericks vs holling press face off at 1:30 p.m and this game promises to be the must exciting of the three games played tickets have been sold all week by members of the norton union outing commit tee m the lobby last minute purchase can be made m the program coordinator's office room 251 debate team ready syracuse first foe the university of buffalo stu dent debating society has now completed its organization anil is prepared to embark upon a series ii debates which have been ar ranged the tentative schedule for the present semester includes de bates with such prominent schools aa stanford university johns hop kins university humilton college and wayne university on february 19th and 20th a team composed of jerome c llos enthal and hilary p bradford will appear at hnughton college and syracuse university respectively to debate the negative side of the resolution that world federal government should be established plans for local activities befora civic groups and possibly on r&dlo programs are also being formulat ed by a committee under the di rection of meyer j abgott these programs are designed to meet needs of group members and local audiences which intercollegiate de bates would not meet attend the inter
