pitt boys from the carnegie tech on the following night saturday the i'owellmen will bring the present basketball season to a close enter taining the strong quintet from col gate although carnegie tech does not come here with a very enviable record to date they cannot be taken too easily the team is composed of a number of tall men and only last week trounced a strong quintet from washington and jefferson among those who have beaten the tech boys are geneva waynesburg university of pittsburgh pennsylvania penn state and others this is only a taste of the class of basketball car negie has encountered this year this means that the buffalo boys will have to do some tall hustling in order to put the skids under the tech boys saturday night the bisons enter tain the giant bollerman and his cohorts from colgate this marked bollerman's last appearance with a colgate team in opposition to the university of buffalo bollerman is one of the foremost basketball play ers in the collegiate world fordham new york university and others although they have dropped decisions to syracuse and to the hitherto undefeated ford ham team which has scored twenty six consecutive victories to date they are still considered as one of the lead ing quintets of college basketball to day listed among their victims are the basketeers of the university of rochester over whom they scored a very impressive victory u b debaters win over rutgers on initial eastern invasion victory partially marred by loss to syracuse next day the university of buffalo debate team returned home from their eas tern tour after having won one con test and lost one on monday febru ary 25th the home team defeated a highly rated kutgers team at new brunswick n j previous to this de bate rutgers had scored decisive vic tories over west virginia tufts and dates college the buffalo team composed of morris opler melvin weig e tropman upheld the nega tive of the question resolved that the jury system should be abolish ed the buffalo forensic artists brought out that it is not the jury system that is to blame for our pres ent-day injustices but the legal pro cedure followed at present there is entirely too much chance for delay in our legal trials the rutgers team tried to prove that the jurors were picked from the class of people who had average or very little intelligence these people they said were not competent to de cide on fine points of law however their arguments were not convincing for the judges voted 2 to 1 in favor of the bisons tuesday morning february 26th the buffalo team entrained for syra cuse where they suffered a reverse which in light of the fact that two of the judges were syracuse alumni was not deserving the defeat of rutgers is a big feather in the debaters cap and will open a new and larger field of oppo nents for them to debate next year if they choose annual frosh sermon cited by dean gregory poor frosh they forget so easily proof — the negative wearing of the moliere on farce subject of talk by dr knudson a most successful meeting of the u b french club was held in the grosvenor library on wednesday february 20 when dr c a knud son instructor in the romance lan guages department gave a delightful talk in french on moliere as a writ er of farce the speaker pointed out how much the development of french comedy owes to molifire who had revived that branch of literature in the 17th century dr knudson summed up admirably the most sali ent features of moliere's genius and pointed out that although a writer of farce and comedy moli&re often approached tragedy in his portrayal of life the talk was illustrated by leading scenes from several charac teristic plays on behalf of the club mr vincent scanio president thank ed dr knudson for his excellent talk and also miss helen mintz who had kindly played pianoforte selections bisons take thriller from speedy rochester quintet former loss avenged to tune or 29-26 playing heads-up ball throughout the game the university of buffalo cagers defeated the rochester team in a hair-raising game in which the lead see-sawed from one team to the other till after the beginning of the second half when buffalo got a strangle hold which rochester could not break the sparkling team play of the bisons was noticeable throughout as they worked the ball under the basket for scores while rochester was resorting to long shots few of which tallied rochester opened the scoring with a two-pointer from under the basket but siegel and schrag with a two pointer and a foul shot gave the bisons the lead a double foul gave both teams an added point but roch ester came up with another free throw jetter brought in two more markers for the bulls while schrag with one and siegel with two fouls gave buffalo a five-point margin rochester then caged four fouls and a field goal to take the lead but gabbey jumped the ball in to regain it schrag's pretty quarter-court throw was good for two points siegel's opponent failed to convince the referee that he merely was neck ing and siegel added another free throw which rochester immediately matched when farrow committed a foul jetter took siegel's shot off the backboard and dropped it in as the half ended with the score 16-11 in favor of buffalo in the second half rochester came back with a rush and before the bulls could get well started the score was even at 19 all schrag then dropped in two neat free throws and roches ter failed to recover although they threatened till the last moment gabbey followed farrow who had been ejected on personal fouls and pushback came in and put the ball through the hoop after an exhibition of perfect passwork by himself and jetter that took the ball from one end of the floor to the other following a rochester foul shot pushback in serted another two points which was evened up by a loop shot on the part of rochester jetter's two fouls and pushback's tally completed the bull's scoring while rochester could score only one basket and a foul and the gun barked giving the bisons a well deserved victory 29-26 faculty women return from convention at cleveland dean lillias m macdonald who convocation mr ellenwod noted guest gives interesting address those who were not present at the student-faculty convocation on tues day the 26th have missed the rare opportunity of hearing mr james l ellenwood of new york mr ellen wood chiefly stresses the fact that it is more important for young people of today seeking careers to be some thing some of the time instead of doing something all of the time according to mr ellenwood the high schools and universities give an individual a balance of life an equip ment and unless the individual is capable of associating them with an ideal his ideal his life becomes fu tile the world needs men and wom en who have finished personalities who do things for themselves who refuse to be mere mechanical organ isms mr ellenwood left his listeners with the thought that each one of us is a personality given an unusual op portunity and in order to bring out that personality to its highest degree one must avoid the rush and zipp of things peter j
