during the hours not required at lafayette in 1918 at the request of the university profesor sherk re signed as a high school teacher and became head of the mathematics de partment of the university his in terest in the arts college did not end with the department of which he was head for professor sherk was a mem ber of the faculty executive commit tee chairman of the honors group in 1927-28 and was a member of the athletic council as well his bound less enthusiasm and hearty co-opera tion were inspirational to the stu dents as chairman of the committee on financial aid to students professor sherk gave generously of his time and thought in the field of major mathematics professor sherk was well known act ing as president of the mathematics teacher's association of the middle states and maryland for two years altogether mr sherk was one of the hading men on the college faculty hean julian park expressed the heart felt sorrow of the university in com menting upon the death of his col players were awarded block b's for successful participation in football during the 1928 season be it noted that the requirements for this insignia have been markedly raised that the men receiving their letters are greatly deserving of praise and that the number of lettermen is de cidedly less than for the 1927 season when 25 awards were made arts joseph red abeles irwin baby-face altman tom tral y m c a this supper the girls provided so successfully that the latter decided to reciprocate sim ilar occasions in other years have yielded much enjoyment in spite of the fact that the men usually con tains the indespensable and ever-pres ent bean we wondered at first whether the men expected to try to compete with the girls in a culinary way but since this is not the case it seems to be safe to partake of the meal the guests will reserve judgement until after the affair the price of the sup per will be thirty-five cents which ought not to be prohibitive even for co-eds blue and white hopes to repeat former victories over clarkson tonight the bisons wind up the first half of their basketball schedule in an encounter with clarkson tech at the elmwood music hall as a preliminary to the varsity game the freshmen will engage the nichols school team last year the bulls registered twice over the visitors winning handily in both encounters however clarkson has a more experienced team this year and will attempt to overthrow the regime of the blue and white the buffalo quint now free from the weight of impending exams is plan ning to step out and again take the measure of its rivals all of the men on the squad are in good condition and recent practice sessions have been in the nature of hard workouts to get them back into first class playing form consider able attention has been given to the art of foul shooting to avert a repeti tion of the loss of a game due to in ability to cage free throws fast passing cutting and co-ordination of plays were also given their usual con sideration the team is now in a po sition to make use of the experience it has gained from previous encoun ters and should go after the potsdam aggregation like a veteran outfit the freshman team has chalked up a fine record in its games to date and is planning to add another win to its tally by downing the nichols prep sters i his preliminary attraction should be only slightly less interest ing than the varsity game although the recent losses have been somewhat disappointing in the face of early season success the bisons are out to even things up with a string of victories they need the backing of every loyal u b sup porter if the players realize that the student body the alumni and admin istration are solidly behind them and interested in what the team is doing it will be much easier for them to give that little extra bit of fight and grit which often means the difference between a win and a loss get be hind your team wilfred h sherk biology club meets
