team will get the support of the student body the athletic policy committee has done its part now do yours u s treasury dept sponsors photo contest contest's object is to promote sale of bonds and good photography captain edward steichen usnr tbe dean of american photographers is a lauded and familiar name to every amateur photographer now all student and faculty camera enthusiasts have an opportunity of winning a magnificent original print of his — the only one signed by him since the beginning of the war the picture which shows a u s navy hellcat landing on the deck of the tjss lexington during the gilbert and marshall operation is the prize offered in a contest that has two objectives — pro moting good photography and helping to secure the peace through the sale of victory bonds sponsored by the u s treas ury this contest works hand in hand with our own bond drive now being promoted by the wows all the contestant has to do is photograph some phase of our campus bond activities this may be action drama or humor you may include pictures of returning veterans since bonds support the g i bill of rights naturally any rallies or the ac tual bond people at work provide excellent subjects action should be the aim of news pictures and drama the aim of the more serious poster studies each caption should contain the date name of the college and names of the key people enter as many pictures as you wish to the war finance committee of new york state prom there they will be forwarded to the ed ucation section war finance di vision in washington which may use them in the victory loan publicity mark them photo contest do not bend compe tion closes december 15 twenty degrees conferred by chancellor capen nine bachelor's degrees and eleven master's are presented the university of buffalo con ferred 20 degrees at a special commencement last wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock in the exhibition room of lockwood memorial library nine were bachelor's degrees and 11 mas his degree in absentia as he is now studying for his doctorate at columbia university entrance tests to be given to freshmen all freshmen including both those who entered in july and september who did not take all the entrance examinations earlier are urged to do so the mornings of monday november 26th and tuesday november 27th tests will be given in the auditorium in edmund hayes hall these mornings come one come all to gala harvest dance november 16 dungarees and sloppy joes are appropriate attire for dancing at norton union festival come stag or drag f again we find on the editor's night of harmful study rather will i laugh and dance and maybe later find romance at the gala u b pance at the quoth he harvest dance dr wagner to begin reading lectures nov 10 course given to improve speed reading and comprehension dr mazie e wagner assistant dean of students will conduct a series of lectures in speed read ing and comprehension beginning saturday november 10 the aim of the course is to en able slow readers to step up the tempo of their reading via me chanical methods and for those whose comprehension is poor to increase this item substantially it is often quite possible for a alow reader one who reads ap proximately twenty pages an hour to increase his reading capacity to two or three times that amount by following the general principles laid down in this course the course is highly recom mended for all those who have difficulty in speed and retaining what they read prof kurtz to speak at next i a.y meeting the i a y wishes to apologize for the fact that the promised south of the border film could not be shown last monday professor leonard p kurtz will speak at the next meeting no vember 12 anyone who has been in one of prof kurtz classes knows what a boundless and fascinating store of information he has gathered in his travels through mexico spain france and italy and there may be more countries which we have not yet heard about his talk is sure to be rich in amusing incidents stor ies of customs of other lands and descriptions of places of interest the meeting will begin nt 3:30 in norton hall and refreshments will follow at this meeting a vote will be taken on the proposed con stitution and a parliamentarian will be elected to counsel the club on the correct procedure for conducting its meetings newman club hay ride declared a success maybe we
