evening away in hayes hall bus ad students hold monte carlo party it was a shadowy but yet shin ing moonlight night on friday the 27th when one could see five or six mysterious shadows slyly slip in the back door of hayes hall and slowly but cautiously make their way to the 3rd floor rear then if one would look carefully there was another group of mysterious characters doing the same thing it all start ed about 7:30 but as time went en more and more groups would be doing the exact thing as your arrangement needed of u b alma mater important meeting of u b or chestra direclor art detmers is request ing all members of the u b or chestra to attend the rehearsal friday in hayes auditorium on november 3 at 3:30 with or with out instruments to discuss an important program to be played by the orchestra in the near fu ture any musicians who are not yet in the orchestra are invited to attend this rehearsal several musicians are still needed in the orchestra any mu sicians who play violin or clar inet are invited to join the or chestra a cymbal player and bass player are also needed any student who would like to volunteer his services as music arranger is asked to contact art detmers or three of the candidates are al ready in service mr loveland and mr eikenburg are in the navy and mr bogdan in the army chancellor capen presided and conferred the degrees arts and sciences class officers are announced results of this week's student elections in spite of the notable absence of campaigning and controversy which accompanied last week's straw vote u b students never theless displayed their class spir it through their all out participa tion in voting for class officers on tuesday the freshman class of the college of arte and sci ences cast their ballots on wed nesday the upper classmen voted voting took place at a table out side of norton union candidates for office were chosen by the officers of last year's classes with the exception of the freshmen who chose two class representatives earlier in the year these representatives in turn appointed a nominating com mittee the winners in the class elections were as follows arts and sciences freshman class president regional office at batavla announced recently preferential bidding monday to terminate rush season scurry and worry of rushing draws to close with formal dinners rules for preferential bidding — i with all the usual excitement the formal rush period for all sororities on campus is coming to a close at last sigma kappa started the week with a formal dinner at the town club on tuesday the following evening wednesday chi omega held a formal dinner at the stuy veeant alpha gamma delta had its formal dinner last night thursday at the town club sigma delta tau is having a barnyard party tonight tomor row night there will be two for mal dinners theta chi will have theirs at the hotel lenox while sigma alpha rho will hold theirs at the hotel westbrook to be pledged to a sorority a girl must be carrying credit for 12 hours of work recognized by the registrar to be initiated she must have received a c average in the number of hours carried in the semester immediately pre students in the university the school of fine arts and the work study plan are eligible tor pledg ing provided that they arc work ing toward a degree students in uillard fillmore college ire in eligible for period shall extend midnight sunday november results of poll hail kaye as favorite of u b sammy kaye to charm campus hep-cats in near future in a poll held by the univer sity of buffalo bee thursday november 2 the popularity on campus of two of the big names in the popular music world was decided the master-mind of swing and sway sammy kaye was deemed superior to the famed swooner crooner prank sina tra by an overwhelming majority of u b coeds the great crosby-sinatra con test of popular acclaim raised no more intense discussion and loud protestations of loyalty and fe male devotion than did this nor ton union polling place for the popularity race of the season be came the scene of such a bedlam and state of confusion as only a group of bloppy-sweatered saddle shoed swing sway and swoon devotees can create kaye's win by such a huge shortage of teachers evidenced by report a growing shortage of high school teachers is evidenced by 1 the extraordinary large number of requests to the university of buffalo for candidates dr mazie e wagner research associate in education has re ported that 128 different high school systems requested 236 teachers from the university dur ing the past spring and summer these requests were only in sub jects for which preparation is of fered at the university we had only 40 applicants available but we placed them all dr wagner said this in cludes 14 who had just been grad uated from college one who had returned from teaching to grad uate school three who had re turned from the armed forces 10 corralled from industry and 12 who wished to transfer
