the bee z-460 number 8 volume 23 «@*> 4 8 buffalo n y november 20 1942 bernie burns to play for fraternity dance one of the first dances of its kind in any university will be sponsored by beta sigma rho fra ternity who will honor all frater nity men present and past of the university of buffalo now in the service of the country at klein hans music hall this sunday from ten to two the general chairman of the affair is robert schuer co-chair men are bert raff and kenneth drellich music will be furnished by bernle burns the young man with a band he has played at previous dances at norton hall tickets have been distributed to the local u.5.0 and several members of the armed forces will be in attendance all fraternities on campus and the medical fraternities have sub mitted long lists of their members in service at 12 o'clock the names will be read and proper respects paid to these men this will be one of the last dances before the thanksgiving vacation fraternity men and in dependents are urged to get to gether sunday night to enjoy this dance and at the same time to honor their fraternity brothers and friends in the front lines " hit the silk drive sponsored by wows the wows are sponsoring a hit the silk campaign for one week beginning the monday after thanksgiving vacation the girls are requested to contribute all old silk or nylon stockings they will be accepted in any condition and are to be put in boxes which will be provided there will be one box in nor ton and one in hayes hall the stockings which are collected will be taken to a central distribut ing center where they will be made into parachutes betty o'connell is in charge of the dean macdonald plans to spon sor a waac or a wave who will address an all women's con vocation in the near future the blood bank will be held shortly after christmas vacation this year swing club members enjoy krupo records the u b swing club held an other session last tuesday in the mixed lounge the records of gene krupa and his orchestra were donated to the club by bill casselman popular campus hep ster besides krupa's sensation al music the broadcast also in cluded records by glenn miller jimmy dorsey charlie barnet and benny goodman the next informal broadcast is scheduled for this coming tues day at 12:45 p m in the mixed lounge these broadcasts origin ate in the blue room and are sent via wireless into the lounge only swing club members are allowed to watch the actual broadcasts but all are invited to enjoy the music through the cafe teria and lounge radios according to sherwood hiller club prexy the swing club now has 93 members and will close its registration after thanksgiving once the registration rolls are complete non-members will no longer be privileged to join in the sessions debate tryouts are scheduled for next week i debate tryouts will be held i monday at 4:30 in the board room at this time all men are ■eligible to try out those trying i out should be able to speak about i ten minutes on the intercollegiate • nats question resolved that i the united nations should estab ■lish a permanent federal union i with power to tax and regulate international commerce disputes . and to enforce all settlements and i to provide for the admission of . other nations which accept the principles of the union ' several teams will be selected 1 to represent the university in in tercollegiate debates dr aid rich the debate coach is quite anxious to get started as some intercollegiate debates are already scheduled for the early part of december there will be a debate club meeting during convocation hour wednesday november 25 unless there is an important convocation scheduled masquers play to be presented december 4 5 blue masquers will present thunder hock a three-act play by robert ardrey on friday and saturday evenings december 4 and 5 tliis is the masquers big gest effort since liliom work has 1 been concentrated for the past two weeks on building the set and this is nearly complete rehearsals for both the first and second acts have been going on simultaneously under the direc tion of stan travis assisted by betty patterson and ora mae le cercle francais to hold tea nov 23 le cercle francais invites all former and present students of french to a tea to be held mon day november 23 at 3:30 in the blue room dues of fifty cents for the semester will be collected officers for the french club elected at the last meeting in clude president ralph cryesky vice-president lorraine freeman treasurer james may secre tary rosalie molnar and min ister of propaganda esther mai sel war bond drive the united states treasury department has designated no vember 22 - november 28 as minute women at war work the following faculty wives of the university of buf falo operating directly under the united states treasury de partment would appreciate stu dent cooperation by purchasing bonds which will be for sale between 10:00 a m and 4:00 p m in edmund hayes union saturday tomorrow night saturday nor ton union presents its first big dance of the season the stamp stomp in addition to the dan cing the program will include a halt hour of entertainment featur ing pete krug of radio station webr em-cee of the noon day review and the 1340 club aa master of ceremonies contrary to a statement in the dee last week the rhythm kings will not be on hand dean stathacos and bill raikin how ever are bringing a fifteen piece oichestra to play at the dance ethel stevens and lee jones are in charge of the entertain ment among the entertainers will be elsie jane pfeil of the 8.8.c and the university who will put on a novelty tap dance act moon variations rita ger maine nine years of age who has a fine acrobatics-on-stairs routine erwin noblett tap-dancer and singer extraordinary a colored dance team and messrs smith and hall eleven and twelve years old respectively the former a singer from the boy's department at the y m c a and the latter a master of the piano and guitar norton union has sent faculty invitations to dr and mrs wood mr and mrs bob park dr and mrs reginald pegram dr and mrs ellis ott dr leary dr adele land dr and mrs claude puffer mr and mrs j allan pfefer dr and mrs harry geh man dr and mrs harold hewitt dr and mrs lewis froman dr and mrs bertram lemon and dr and mrs richard drake the dance is informal every one is invited admission price will be the purchase of fifty cents worth of war stamps you keep he stamps and stags will be admitted annuol pan-hell ball to highlight vacation the annual pan-hellenic ball will be held at kleinhans music hall saturday november 28 from 10 to 1:30 there will be dancing to the lovely music of the well-known dave cheskin and his orchestra in the attractive mary seton room and of course for monday after thanksgiving because of the delay it may be realized even more that the directory is an es sential possession for everyone the staff has become more and more aware of this since they have been questioned at least ten times a day about its publication they are grateful for the concern of the student body and deserve a great deal of praise for their work they have obtained the uames of all u b students and faculty members and telephone numbers whenever possible they have given a great deal of time and effort that it will be the best annual barrister ball to be held at b.a.c the legal minds of u b will dispert themselves iu true profes sional manner at the buffalo ath letic club on december 5 at the annual barrister ball this affair of utmost importance to all law school students includes events each prospective lawyer eagerly looks forward to at the banquet the alden prize will be awarded to the winner of the moot court argument father boland until recently head of
