moving-up day parade enlivened the down town area last saturday morning with an assortment of colorful ind expressive floats ' the par iide began at exchange street und moved up main street to i'upper there the marching units were assigned to automobiles and the cavalcade continued to the university the procession was led by queen kay bruner and her two attendants jane powell and edith poummit chi ome ga's float labeled victory gar dens carried farmerettes and signs reading turnip the soil beet hitler and squash the japs alpha gam portrayed the steps to victory as patriotism and education kappa belt's truck behind which a stuffed figure la beled jap was being dragged tarried signs showing steps in a typical yoim man's life as fol lows fresh chap new cap changed map and dead jap and the chemistry department fum ed at hitler when the parade reached cam pus an award convocation was held it was opened by the crowning of the queen then dot tie haas presented activity keys the following people received awards gold glee club keys ruth brendel and dean statha cos silver glee club keys joan searles and richard lifschutz blue masquers gold keys norm an chassin and robert brock hurst gold debate keys julien renswick and rose marie pace bison gold key james donnelly bison silver key robert blaney joint charities campaign must have more support the joint charities goal tot the university of buffalo is 6000 the students have thus far raised 661 there are many lists that have not as yet been handed in there are many people that have not as yet been approached students who have a list to hand in should bring it to miss haas in norton hall im mediately any one who has not been approached come to see miss haas in the director's office at norton hall right away every one's support is needed this cam paign must be more of a success than ever this year 1 . a student's contribution of 2 can be deducted frtom his break age fee if he so desires windfall's next issue will be sold monday this monday may 11 the sec ond issue of windfall will go on sale salesmen in crosby hayes and norton will distribute copies to those who present subscription receipts copies can also be pur chased for fifteen cents from a large amount of contri butions which were submitted the editors have selected what they consider the best stories poems and articles trying to make the magazine representative of stu dents alumni and faculty and to achieve the proper balance be tween material of a serious na ture and material in a lighter vein in a sense the keynote of this varied issue is set by dr willard bonner's poem ballad of opposite 1 ;. for those who like their classics straight windfall offers lines to persephone while for those who prefer them with a bisonhead president installed at banquet at its annual installation ban quet last saturday evening at macdoel's restaurant bisonhead senior men's honorary society elected everett bus brown popular pharmic president for the coming year inducted into the organization with brown were colin macleod bus ad dean stathacos arts donald stickney dental and alfred trybuszewski bus ad all of whom were tap ped at the 1942 junior prom richard lane who had been act ing secretary of the organization during the past year outlined the qualities which the new members should look for when selecting next year's tappees — leadership as evidenced in extra-curricular activities athletics and commun ity service scholarship and cer tain not easily defined person ality characteristics which usually serve to make the candidate pop ular with his fellows janet brown receives prize for short story janet brown senior in the col lege of arts and sciences was awarded the scribbler's prize for her story crisis a story for children dean macdonald pre sented this award at the moving up day festivities to the author of that story which showed the greatest amount of writing ability and originality of thought alpha kappa psi plan ideal dance at wanakah club tomorrow night is the climax of the spring season in prior years the junior prom has been the highlight of the winter sea son and the alpha kappa psi an niversary dance has highlighted the spring season this year is no exception bill wilson and the members of the white knights orchestra have been contracted and are whipping out some new dance ar rangements especially for this oc casion soft breezes blowing off the lake and shimmering moon light make the wanakah country club the ideal place for this eve ning of solid pleasure if your idea of pleasure doesn't run in a solid vein there is a swell bar at which you can partake of your non-solid enjoyments since gas rationing is scheduled for may 15 just one week away this will probably be the last chance to enjoy a pleasant additional door fee officers are elected by bus ad students a well rounded out group was elected by the business adminis tration school as its officers for the coming school year those elected by the class of 45 are president gilbert waltz vice president betty bassford sec retary jack lewis treasurer david hersh and student coun cil representative robert lang ley the class of 44 chose the fol lowing as officers president gene manner vice president ar lene brandt secretary fran pech treasurer marion butt and student council ben klingelhof er the class of 43 next year's seniors elected al kimball presi dent ethel solly vice president bill wolkert secretary jim mc cullough treasurer and will casselman and al trybuszewski student council bus ad senior to compete in b.b.c final auditions of the several contests in which the university has partici pated this year the latest was the radio announcers contest spon sored by the buffalo broadcasting company william wilson busi ness administration senior was chosen from a field of ten en trants in the university of buf falo auditions held last monday in norton auditorium he will compete with students from can isius state teachers and ni agara university in the final audi tions to be held soon under the direction of herbert c rice di rector of the b b c the preliminary contest here was no easy matter each en trant was required to read a tongue-twisting commercial to extemporize on some popular com mercial and to give an original pep talk on buying war bonds dr harriet montague dr horton and mr stanley travis served as judges the other contestants were daniel bishara gordon foploff mirek dabrowski donald gardi ner leland jones klliot mcgin nes warren weller dick woods and william rakln first air raid alert sounded on campus the first trial alert for the uni versity of buffalo in civilian de fense was sounded last wednes day alerts were planned for med school at 9:30 dent school at 10:30 law school at 11:45 and the campus at 2:10 the system has been set up for many weeks a staff of war dens has been built up and they have been partially trained in the meantime the test was planned in order to determine how the system would work in practice cooperation was very general — wardens reported that the people within their jurisdiction reached shelters well within the five min ute period that is regarded as safe and thereby complied with the first requisite of defense against air raids a special bell system was de vised to reach most of the aca demic buildings an effort to ap proximate the variable pitch of sirens which is the standard warning for public use was made by ringing bells three times al lowing an equivalent time inter val then repeating at no time will this combination of signals bob armstrong engaged for senior ball june 10 norman chassin and george fugitt have been appointed co chairmen of the annual senior ball and scholarship banquet it was announced during senior week by the executive committee of the senior classes the sen ior ball open to all but with sen iors particularly invited will be held on june 10th the night of university graduation as has al ways been the custom , playing for dancing that night will be bob armstrong and his popular wben-nbc orchestra which also appeared at last year's ball and was acclaimed by the record crowd the scholarship banquet at tended only by members of the faculty and of cap and gown and bisonhead senior student honor ary societies will begin at eight o'clock and the dance will start at 10 formal summer dress will be optional for all the festlvites whch will be held at one of the popular country clubs within driv ing distance of all or on the roof garden of one of the town clubs the place and further information on the dance will be announced in next week's bee university will offer degrees in art-ed courses leading to degrees of bachelor of education and muster of education will be offered by the university of buffalo and the buffalo school of fine arts under a new cooperative arrangement announced jointly by chancellor samuel p capen and director philip c elliott the program which will pre pare teachers of art for elemen tary and secondary schools will include summer instruction start ing this year on june 29 > the courses and staff for the summer session were announced as fol lows art painting in oil and water color — isaac soyer lecturer in art and mr elliott professional lecturer in art general design — applied de sign — stagecraft design — tex tile design — costume design — interior
