the bee university of buffalo october 5 1928 vol 9 no 3 russ carrick urges student support for football team jones harper and levy are elected cheerleaders tho first regular student assembly of the year was held on tuesday at 10:30 m the form of a most enthusiastic foot ball rally walter stroman chairman of the assembly introduced the speak ers each of whom spoke earnestly m support of the university's football team euss carrick coach of the team praised both alumni and faculty for the fine cooperation each group has displayed the boosters club an or ganization of alumni who hope to see the sport of football gain a new statu m the life of the university of buf falo intend to support tho team m every possible way a letter from chancellor samuel p capen who is m washington was read to tho students dr cnpen ex pressed regret at his inability to at tend tho rally and assured the team of his full sympathy and loyal support this promise of cooperation was re peal ed by dean julian parke who re minded the students that this is the critical year for the sport of football the whole assembly was a forceful ovidenee of what university of buffalo students can do when they are vitally interested three men were tried out for the position of cheerleader h clifford join's sanford harper and dexter levy will assist warren mul hullan at the game on saturday captain stanley drumsta urged the students to do their part m making tho season a buceoss the team is ready to sacrifice time money and conveni ence for the sake of the university it remains for the student body to lend its support a meeting of loyal students at tile football field on friday afternoon will be hold for cheering practice if the rally is any indication tho university of buffalo's football team will have d luceeuful soason this year faculty alumni and students are ready to sup port tho team attend every game and boost for buffalo first rehearsal of men's glee club held at central v after two weeks of try-outs the men's glee clul held its first rehearsal at the central v last tuesday oc l»l)er 2 with the return of about 75 per tent of last year's men and some fine new material the year promises to lie a howling success there are still two competitive ma jor positions open — accompanist and reader any men who are still wait ing tor try-outs will be tested tues day october bth or october kith at the contra v between 7 and 7:30 or ii ami 9:30 some places are still i'pen so hurry try-outs close october 10th everybody out for rehearsal next tuesday central v room 205 7:30 freshmen women must wear green berets on campus tho following arc the rules which have boon established governing tho conduct of the freshmen women 1 qroen lierrts shall be worn on all jays of the week except sunday be tween tho hours of g a m and 0 p m -'■freshman women shall have no communication on campus with mom bora of the opposite sex 3 freshman w en shall show hor respect to the sophomores and upper class women on campus street cars or r1 lunch i freshmen shall not retain seats m street ears when members of the soph omoro or upper classes are standing continuod on page 2 column 3 bulls open season against edinboro college tomorrow alumni and students promise support for opening game presence of gabbey and vicker to strengthen team juding fiom the enthusiasm shown by the students at the rally held tues day morning on the campus and the efforts of the alumni to arouse inter est within their own ranks rotary field should see the largest crowd that ever gathered to witness a u b football giiiiio when the bisons take the field against edinboro state teachers col lege tomorrow the kick-off will be at 2:30 sharp coach carrick has been using even effort to get the team m prime condi tion for the opener and has welded to gether an organization which augurs hard times for the opposition on of fense as well as on defense the ni.'ii have shown exceptional ability neither line nor backficld boasts a complete roster of men with varsity experience but most of those lacking m this re spect were developed on the frosh quad of last year and are not new to collegiate competition the probable lineup finds gabbey and rica m the wing positions captain drumsta and lojacano as tackles jelly and gibbs holding down the guard po sitions and north at center siemer will call the signals with vickers and wollenburg as halfbacks and blade fullback vickers and gabbey are med ical students who will strengthen the team materially both having had for mer experience plenty of reserve ma terial waits carrick s call this year among those who are apt to break into the game are moran altnian tiube della ridoll bhaw jetter desman goldstein and elliott six hundred members of the alumni are pledged to attend the game and the booster's club is trying to gel even more out if possible muny of the grads are taking advantage of the pportunity to obtain athletic tickets at student rates in the face of tliis showing the students will have to look to their laurels unless they wish to ad mit that the alumnae nro the better boosters let s go students messrs fiero and auch appointed to pharmacy faculty new course of three years proves success dean gregory wishes to announce that this is the second year of the new three-year course m pharmacy which has proved ft decided improvement over the shorter one for 42 years before 1927 a two years course was sufficient for a ph g degree in 1885 this meant 450 hours of intensive school work how ever m 1927 it was found that 1500 clock-hours of work wero being squeezed into the same two-year course hence tho change the present three-year course con sists of 2300 hours thus there is a gain both m years and hours foster hall is proud of its higher standard there lire among the phanns fac ulty for the coming year two new mem bers mr george w fiero and mr john l auch mr fiero with a number of degrees m pharmacy conies from the univer sity of southern california he has had several years of teaching experi ence and is a valuable asset to the department of ifateria medica the appointment of mr auch a nagna cum laudc graduate of u b arts college last year heralds the be ginning of a new system m pharmacy mr auch is giving a course m english three times a week this marks the first branching out of the pharmacy school into a purely cultural subject mr c a knudson is new romance language instructor chancellor samuel p capen of the university of buffalo announces the ap pointment of mr charles a knndscm to the department of romance lan m the college of arts and sci ences mr knudson is a graduate summa bum laude of dartmouth 1924 and was awarded the m a degree by harvard m 1925 upon graduation from dartmouth he was awarded the henry elijah parker fellowship from 19241926 during this time he was a resident graduate student at harvard hi was then awarded the parker trav eling fellowship for the year i!l2fi 27 and the sheldon traveling fellow ship for he year 1927-28 he carried on his studies during thoso two years m brand and paris he has made a number of contributions to the mag azine romania during the past two years he is a member of the phi beta kappa and the social fraternity delta upsilon women's glee club working hard for coming concerts there seems to be a question m the minds of some of the students regard ing tho activities of the women's glee club it is true that freshmen try outs have hud to be postponed because of the fact that there is no piano m the auditorium but the group of last year has not been idle since the opening of school the club has been working on a project to be given m connection with the conven tion of the kalston purina co at the hotel btatler on october bth as soon as this is over regular rehearsals will be held the freshman try-outs will oc cur and the real work of tho year will begin m earnest notices regarding try-outs will be posted as soon as the condition of the auditorium allows women's club party for frosh women a success the women's club of the university held n supper party for the freshmen women wednesday october 3rd at i p m m the women s lounge the sophomore members of the club who were m charge of the entertain ment should be congratulated for the fine program arranged after a very delicious light supper several games were played year of the u b y club tho meeting has been termed chan cellor's night the annual occasion upon which tho chancellor deans and fac ulty join tho men students of the uni versity for two hours of fun the for mality and books of the classroom arc forgotten and good fellowship is m vogue at no other time or place is this feeling of friendship between stu dents and instructors of all colleges more strongly felt with coach buss carrick and the football squad m attendance tho meet ing will symbolize tho faith of the club m the team a varied musical program will cap the evening's entertainment bill sell has moulded several student musi cians into an orchestra for us group singing and surprises will conclude tho program kvery male momber of the freshman blast is bound by custom and tradition to attend and have his initial plate of one-thousand beans at our next meeting we are to have mr cameron veteran sport authority who witnessed the 1928 olympics talk to us on the olympic games from his point of view tho cabinet of the club has planned meetings of the above calibre for the coming year let's go — bring a friend sophs and frosh to be out full force for first rush the sophs and frosh will be offered tin 1 aral opportunity of the year to mix it up m an official rush tomorrow the rush which will lie a tie-up will be held botwoon the halves of the game the object of this rush is to tie up the members of the opposing side and carry them off tho field tho side with the most members on the field at the end of the allotted time wins ob viously this type of rush offers plenty of opportunity for action and both classes should get their fill of scrap ping the freshmen class has organized and are unking plans to clean the sophs up they are undertaking a pretty hard task but very often the indominatable spirit carries tho day and the older boys will have to watch out if the sophs wish to uphold their traditional class supremacy they will have to turn out m full force and stick to the end the rush this year will lie under the combined control of the physical kdu ntion department and the student council mr neil and arts upper classmen will preside girls spend gala week-end at forty acres last saturday twenty girls ami their acuity ehaporon arrived at camp forty lores un the hike shore to bpend a long looked-forward-to week-end it was the oocasion i>l the semi annual house party of the women of the uni versity on sunday six more came out to bpend the day dean mac donald pnid a visit to the camp sunday morn ing saturday afternoon was spent m ex ploring and members during the year 1027-1928 will have over 50 members during 1928 1929 the group this past year has consisted of 19 seniors and 15 juniors for the coming year there will bo 12 seniors 40 juniors freshman year the committee has still to act upon g number of other applications little theatre movement is aim of blue masquers the dramatic society of the univer sity otherwise classed as tha blua masquers is one that has become well known on and about the oampus il was originally founded with tho little theatre idea in its first years many disadvantages were encountered some if which wore lack of ii work shop link of scenery and other important pruportios with persistent effort and with the aid of interested students a oik simp was put up m hast hall n addition an office was secured m foster hall whore it is hoped the little theater movement will take another step forward as yet little has hen planned for tho < ling year duo to the fact that mr i ireds the former director left buffalo to make his homo m the south however the blue masquers hopo to put on a three act play anil several one-act plays m the coming year for the pleasure of the student body
