the bee z-460 volume 22 <*®*> 4 « buffalo n y fri oct 31 1941 numbir6 norton holds pirate dance tomorrow night halliday s music many surprises will be featured tomorrow night at ten o'clock the pirate ball a long anticipated event four hours of fun and friv olity peak of the fall social sea son will get under way to the music of bob halliday and his ten-piece orchestra the band which has played at this annual event for the last two years figures cos tumed in the gay garb of the spanish maine will dance in a setting of an ancient galloon rope shrouds will stretch up o the high celling of norton audi torium ship's lanterns will illu minate the nautical setting the decorations which hav been borrowed for the occasion have a value of over 300 the decorations committee beaded by myron good therefore asks that the guests show extreme care and avoid any damage to these costly materials there will be surprises galore to mention but a few the orches tra is bringing an outstanding soloist the door committee has a few tricks up their sleeves which they will reveal for the first time and the group on charge of the decorations has been able to dean announces arts honor roll for last year the names of the highest ten per cent full-time undergraduate students who have been in at tendance for the entire academic year 1940-1941 composing the honor roll of the college of arts and sciences were announced to day by dean julian park listed in the order of scholastic rank they are seniors robert v pound rob ert n blodgett ruth m euller esther b bronstein vincent f boland ruth e mllander harold f webster elmer h kane juniors wallace e barnes norma-louise grill charlotte o georgi ruth h gelger belle w farrar michael f ellis jr ches ter j marcinkowski marjorie j grupp sophomores joseph ullman maryallce seagrave donald w miller charles p fenimore an drew k keller clara cooper julien c renswick frederick of egloff louis b blelch bernice tabackman helen bonchek fad ra tzetzo annabel b miller isa dore snitzer e james moore arthur scliunk c clyde casey freshmen mildred a widgoff anatole m shapiro eileen a danitz harold a o'hern gloria k ortner robert sherk eliza beth hahnemann dora broder high-spirited eleven to face invaders with two wins and three straight losses on their slate the blue and white eleven moves into home grounds again tomorrow where they will attempt to even up the record in their clash with the engineers of lehigh univer sity the kick-off will be at 2:15 at rotary field the brown and white hasn't won a game this year but they have shown amazing power in their first game the engineers netted 450 yards but couldn't win the pennsylvanians boast a line of giants averaging over 190 pounds outweighing the u b forward wall by at least 15 pounds per man the backfleld fast and tricky is due to unleash terrific power and roll up a big score the men to watch on the engin eer eleven are fullback stan szy makowski joe ambrogi end and dick shafer all of whom have annual ball planned by sorority women the annual pan-hellenic ball will be held this year saturday november 22 in kleinhans music hall the dance will be strictly formal and as usual it will be a closed affair attendance being restricted to sorority women and their escorts bob armstrong's nbc - wben orchestra popular with university students will provide the rhythms fast and slow for the dancers in the receiving line will be guard guards guard — aline borowlak right seems deter mined not to let anyone steal the chest of prizes for the pirate ball marguerite poorten with true pirate interest is keeping an eye on her fair companlop to see that she doesn't do any pilfering on her own or perhaps marg feels that aline is a more attractive prize and hence more likely to be stolen masquers roadside to open december 5 blue masquers has selected the production heads for its winter play roadside which is to be presented on the evenings of de cember 5th and 6th in norton playhouse the following appointments have been made production man ager robert brockurst stage manager larry mclntyre assist ant director grace primas master electrician isadore schnitzer mistresses of properties carmen tilllnghast and marian domed ion mistress of wardrobe marguerite pooten make-up director john o'connor captain of ushers phyllis matheis ticket manager ruth bradley mr stanley d ! travis will direct try-outs for casting have been going on all week and save for one or two minor roles the cast is fairly well set roadside is a hilarious western comedy in three acts by lynn riggs matinee dance to follow lehigh game saturday after the lehigh game on no vember 1 norton union is hold ing another of its matinee dances which have been so popular in the past pat corcoran has been appointed chairman and she has chosen pat morgenstern peg gil lan and joyce rieland as her as sistants as usual there will be dancing to the nickelodian follow ed by refreshments in keeping with hallowe'en festivities aeronautics officials warn applicants against trying exam when tired , too many boys try to do too , much this is one explanation by of ficials of the civil aeronautics administration why 12 percent of applicants for caa pilot training fail to pass the entrance physical examinations nestor a nelson supervisor of the 3rd district which includes university of buffalo has received information on a survey made by caa pilot training officials in the more than 500 colleges now parti 4 cipating in the program although the rejections are relatively few the reports of medical examiners reveal that they could be still further reduced if applicants ap peared for their examinations in a more rested physical condition and a different frame of mind john p morris director of the program has suggested that super visors can help all applicants by discussing these matters with them prior to their taking the examinations mr nelson believes there are : three principal reason for failure ' to pass the physical examinations i the first being the tendency of the boy who wants to fly to crowd his school life with too much activity the average boy cannot work his way through col lege go out for athletics belong to the glee club keep up the re quired scholastic standard and still take the caa pilot training course while the boy who will try to do all this is usually a high type and his ambition deserves commendation his body and mind will not stand the strain some curtailment is imperatve second many applicants come to the medical examiner with a psychological complex feeling that the examiner is a hurdle to get over and not a starting block to help them get going this state of mind added to the physical strain of a period of hard study or of hard play in athletics may result in certain manfestatons of physcal deficiency like double vision many such conditions are frequently transitory but this can not be determined easily in an examination third a combination of vari ables will prevent acceptance most of these mr nelson be lieves are avoidable and he ad ivses students to rest and relax thoroughly before applying for physical examination parade will be feature of next convocation next week wednesday novem ber 6 the glee clubs of the uni versity of buffalo will offer an innovation in the way of convo cations there will be a parade resplendent with signs and ban ners and led by louis mansema's band the parade will form at far end of the campus stadenta may fall in as the parade wends its way to norton hall there a varied program has been plan ned including cheering and sing ing the white masquers presenta tion of wurzel flummery at eon vocation wednesday october 29 was on the whole a very profes sional job under the direction john o'connor and grace priutas the newcomers to the dramatic society showed themselves to be the most promising in years the audience was large and the play was well received continued on page 4 continued on page 4 continued on page 4 continued on page 4 \ y hallowe'en dance at school of fine arte albright art gallery tonite 15c 8:30 seniors will bo able to sign up for buffalonian pictures the week beginning november 3 pictures will be taken monday tuesday and wednesday no vember 17 18 and 19 and mon day and tuesday november 24 and 25 from 10:30 to 4:30 the charge is one dollar hallowe'en dance at school of fine arts albright art gallery tonite 15c 8:30
