will be the most successful season in his regime susquehanna should be a good i test for the potentialities of the u b team their coach amos alonzo stagg jr brings with him 22 members of last year's unde feated squad included are thir teen returning lettermen ,■> against this victory - conscious susquehanna eleven coach peelle sends a team composed of only four lettermen and several prom '* ising dance after a long dull summer everybody is back at school full of vim and vigor anxious to start working and studying again norton's opening dance which is going to be held next saturday : evening offers a grand chance t use up a lot of that btored-u eiiergy left over from vacation | moreover for those who hav had an active summer and hav returned rather worn-out th dance is guaranteed to wake yo up and give you plenty of pep this affair which is held an nually is designed to welcom new norton members as well as to reacquaint the old ones dean stathacos general chairman has andointed the folowing commit tee decorations larry mclntyre and norma coley music elliott mcginnies publicity ruth king guests coley mcleod and mar ion domedion refreshments ed stevens the theme of the dance has not yet been revealed but it is said that it will come as a delightful surprise in order that norton union may aid the bundles for britain campaign everyone at tending the dance will be request ed to bring a bundle of clothes and other useful articles which will be delivered to the buffalo bundles committee and thence to england even the smallest contribution wil be greatly appre at least one person of every couple present must belong to norton union and 75 will be charged for each outside guest stags will be allowed chairman stathacos in com bee reporter meditates on campus life for the approaching year school days school days dear old golden rule days ah for most of us it's back to the old grind again getting up early for 8:30 classes staying up t late to do assignments and for j otlier reasons too it means | renewing our acquaintance with the lockwood and grosvenor li * braries yes we gripe and grumble but deep down in our hearts we love it all at least this first week before our work ina to pile up on hb we're dellgked to be back on campus again seeing old friends and mak ing new ones seeing new faces and figures has a great deal to do with our being glad to be back the upperclass boys have been itching for some time to get at the new crop of freshman boys we all like to look over the fresh man class and to make friends with them we love helping them and inviting them to our organiza tions i suppose the reason we enjoy this is because it gives us such a feeling of superiority chancellor capen warns students need more play at the 9(ith opening convoca tion of the university of buffalo chancellor samuel p capen pic tured american universities as training centers for the defense of american integrity and the bet terment of american life the chancellor urged the students to play more in this time of crisis he said that some students wor ried too much and some not enough and that in talking about play he was referring to the form er group the chancellor stress ed the fact that people should have a better knowledge of the meaning of american democracy and that a university was the best place to acquire such knowl edge chancellor capen warned stu dents to resist the temptation to stop studying and to take employ ment he said that americans today are more concerned about what america is and what it may be than at any time since the civil war the chancellor said whether we are isolationists or interventionists all of us recog nize that the united states is in danger he urged the students to ask themselves this question i what are we trying to defend ' freshmen must obey all sophomore rules the opening days of school from september 22 to september 27 have been designated as freshman days by the sophomore class during this period the freshmen are subject to certain rules imposed and rigidly en forced by file sophmore class any one who violates any of these rules will be given a sum mons and tried in sophmore court which will be held wed nesday october 1 in norton hall here the austere group of sopho mores will pass judgment on the offenders the sophomores prom ise that the penalties will be unique and will be suited to the crime the rules have been conspicu interfrat dance tomorrow will feature dave cheskin an inaugural dance sponsored iby the interfaterntty council ot the university wll be held tomor row evening september 27 from 10 • 2 in norton auditorium this will be the first dance of the so cial season and therefore is ex pected to berve as a reunion for all those upperclassmen who have been out of touch with one an other during the pust summer months the muln purpose ot the affair however is to acquaint freshmen with fraternity men faculty and their classmates all faculty members are invited to be the guests of the councty dave cheskin and hts ■well known wgr and columbia.-net work band will provide dwlttg for the jitterbugs and sway for the more conservative this orchestra i is rapidly rising council wil entertain freshmen and uppei class non-sorority women at a tea this afternon from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m in the blue room the pan hellenic council sponsors two teas each year for the purpose of helping new students to become acquainted with sorority women in the receiving line will be dean lillias macdonald dean of women miss emma deters reg istrar of the university miss marion holmes women's person nel adviser and the sorority presidents chi omega miss ruth brendel phi psi miss grace primas zeta tau miss irma balash theta chi miss phyllis matheis alpha gamma delta miss mary armsden sigma al pha rho miss doris rosenberg sigma delta tau miss ruth su kernek sigma kappa miss janet huber acting as hostesses and pouring matinee dance will climax opening football game tomorrow afternoon after the opening football game against susquehanna there will be a mat inee dance in norton hall there will be dancing until 5 p m chairman vivian mark's has not yet announced whose orchestra will play but promises that if will be one which has been ac claimed by the students on a previous occasion coffee and cookies will be served miss marks says i expect a large crowd to turn out for this dance after our flrs't football vic tory after giving their all at the game students will be in need of relaxation and refresh ment such as they will find at the dance slight decrease evident in fall registration this year's preliminary regis tration figures show a decrease of 437 students the report shows 252.1 students registered as com pared with 2959 on the opening day last year the day colleges lost only 93 students while mi lard flllmore college lnst n the freshman olass showed a loss of 72 sophomores a loss of 30 juniors a gaiu ot 43 and tlio seniors a lisi o 33
