the bee 01 9 university of buffalo september 21 1928 no 1 chancellor capen presides at opening convocation rapid strides in past few years noted in school lively student activity rally held after convocation on wednesday morning in the audi torium of edmund hayes hall the open ing convocation was held for the first time in 8;l years on the premises of the university with the atmosphere enriched by the bell which was the gift of mrs edward h butler and with the dignity of the academic pro cession this was indeed tho most aus picious opening that has taken place following the invocation by dr boyn ton and the singing of america chan cellor capen spoke to the student body dr cnpen declared the new surround ings to be symbolical of the growth and change of conditions of the eighty two years of its life the university has ninny friends and many gifts have been made having become one of the most cherished possessions of this com munity the university has the power to attract gifts nnd goodwill from the community and these will be accumu lated if the university deserves them we expect to continue to deserve such confidence ur capen expressed his idea that universities are like u delicate compo site of the impressions made by the members it is our privilege to make of this university what we will it is the purpose of the university of buffalo to incorporate the best known ideas of education the faculty nnd student body are not to be bound by convention nor to do things just because other universities do them the university students have a cer tain noblesse oblige and are under bonds to demand more of themselves than those not so fortunate the university is a society of schol ars old and young in a partnership thirteen new partners on the faculty were introduced by dr capen one pleasant aspect of the first con vocation in the university's auditorium was the fact that the student body turned out so well that there was very little standing room following the recessional of the ncn domic procession a student meeting was conducted by walter o stronian cheerleader mulholluiid led several rousing cheers to start the enthusiasm for the student activities stanley drumstra captain of the football team outlined the hopes and plans for this year forty men have reported for practice and the prospects are most en couraging the first game will be staged october i when the team from the state teachers college of fdinboro pa comes to buffalo student support is what the buffalo team now needs and it needs lots of it the publications were explained by frank dressier and candidates and stu dent support were solicited john priebe and margaret holmes told of the men's and women's sloe clubs nnd urged candidates to step for went soon melvin weig explained the purpose of the debate club which meets every second thursday at townsend hall the dramatic society was spoken of by marvin cohen also asking candi dates to come out soon irving hymen representing the in ter-fraternity council read the hush ing rules . panhellenic assn invites freshmen girls to tea the panhellenic association which includes in its membership every girl n the nine affiliated sororities of the university has invite l all the girls of the freshman class to its annual tea the purpose of this gathering is to acquaint the upper class sorority girls with the freshmen this year the tea will take place on thursday september 27 from 4:30 to { 00 o'clock in the afternoon three sororities will act as hostesses phi psi phi sigma sigma and sigma rap pa sororities many prominent members added to university faculty three members of last year's faculty study at yale the university is most unfortunate in losing several of the mombora of iis faculty professor clifford of the fronch department has resigned to go to tufts college the english de partment will miss messrs bilvorman ami million who with mr yoehclson of the psychology group arc to study at vale others of the faculty have ob talned a leave of absonee fortunately the loss will not be a permanent one m and mine casassa will spend d yc*i in france mr woodburn of the chem istry department has gone to north western university the hiology or ganization will feel the loss of mr truilel who goes to munich germany ami mr hoiton goes to harvard from the history department dr white ami dr cantor are on leave of ab sence for the first semester only to fill these vacancies ten new mem bets have been added to the arts fac ulty assistant professor scofleld comes to the psychology dept from yale i'ni versify when he has been an instructor from 1924-28 he was graduated from wesleyan university in lll^'l and took hit doctorate at yale in 1928 from 1923-24 he was research assistant in psychology at wesleyan in the mathematics dept there will bo assistant professor copeland who wus graduated from amherst college in 1921 j he took his master's and doctor's legreos at harvard the latter in wi'ii from 1922-23 ho was instructor in math inatics at harvard ami from 1024-28 list mi tor al the rico institute texas assistant professor loldthorpe conies to the education dept from the uni versity of minnesota he was grad uated in 1918 from hanilin university and took degrees of master and doctor at the university of minnesota in 1924 and uiik respectively to the economics dept has been added assistant professor stunner who was graduated from northwestern uni versity in 1!l-'li anil later in the year took the degree of m b a from the same institution hi has made a spe cial aiudy of public utilities and has done research work in the institute for research in land economies assistant professor icittredge comes to the romance language dept from trinity college university of toronto women's glee club tryouts to be held monday sept 24 the women's glee club is wasting no . time in beginning tile activities of the year the season will open when some , thirty of the former members of the organization will participate in n sketch given by the rnlston purina co ■at their fall convention to be held at the hotel statler oct i this convention is for the purpose of teach ing the ralston salesmen how to sell their products which is the theme ground which the playlet is arranged by taking part in this convention the girls have an opportunity to get back into glee club work at an enrly date i'ii'slimen girls who are interested in trying out for glee club nre requested to sign the notice posted on the bulle tin board as soon as possible try outs for freshmen will begin mon lav sept 24 at 4:30 p m former mem bers of the club who wish to continue their glee club work this year are also requested to sign up without delay tin date for the first regular rehearsal will be announced later this year promises to be the best in the history of the club anil one in the success j of which every girl ought to be proud to share inter-fraternity council sets laws for frat rushing at the opening of school there is al ways increasing activity in all the fra ternities and sororities every organi zation endeavors to pledge a goodly number of students especially from the incoming clnss for the past few years the sororities have been restricted during pledge time by the rules of the panhelletie council this year for the first time the fra ternities will be governed by a similar set of rules this set of laws which has to do with rushing and pledging are part of the constitution of the inter-fraternity council which was formed last year articles 7 and 8 covering rushing and pledging are printed as follows article 7 bushing section 1 no fraternity shall bind any lushec to a pledgeship in that fra ternity during rushing period section 2 rushing shall be con siderod as any act overt or covert car ried out by any fraternity or member or pledges of the fraternity to influ ence a man to accept a pledgeship in that group article b—pledging8 pledging section 1 no sophomore junior or senior may be pledged to any frater nity until he has officially enrolled section 2 no first year man at the university may be pledged until at least one month after the official beginning of the school year section 3 no pledging or rushing shnll be done outside the official school year section 4 if n pledge is dropped by any fraternity he is ineligible to receive nnother pledge before the be ginning of the next school year un less the group from which he is dropped consents to this freshmen girls to be entertained by women's club in the general confusion caused by the opening of school nnd the begin ning of the various activities of the i'liiversity the women's club must not be overlooked unlike many of the ex tra-curricular activities this organiza tion requires no special aptitude or tal ent it is a purely social organization open to nil women students of the uni versity and formed for the purpose of furthering friendly relations among the girls the meetings are held every two weeks in the women s lounge some in the evening and others nt noon some very fine programs have been arranged by the committee under ruth reddi cliffe 29 the opening meeting of the women's club will be held on wednesday sept 2(i nt which time the freshmen girls will be entertained at luncheon all freshmen girls are urged to be present even though they do not intend to join luncheon will be served at 12:20 p m in the women's lounge all former members nre expected to act as host esses at this time campus calendar friday september 21 call brings out thirty-five men for place on team freshman squad to practice with varsity players under the direction of conch russ carrick the u b football squad started its practice sessions last monday a squad of sixteen men turned out for the initial workout and many more are ex pected on the gridiron as the semester gets under way due to increased co-operation be tween the various departments of the university many new men have been able to try out for the team among these are many from the law school which hns revised its schedule of class hours in order that there will be no interference between lecture hours and practice sessions this definitely marks the passing of the old system of flood light practice and is a great step for ward toward the building of a fight ing team carrick has been much encouraged by the number of men with former ex perience who are turning out among these are captuin drumstn ungerer day gibbs north gannon lojacono letter ridall miner and slade siemer and wollenburg the stars of last year's freshman team have again donned the cleats and hope to win positions on the varsity squud others of tho former frosh squud to report are schwartz altaian watts and shaw who with some training may secure regular berths elliott wertheimcr and geyer are other aspirants from the arts col lege although the freshman squad which reports next week will work out with the varsity men games have been ar ranged with the rochester and niagara greenhorns the plebes will practice under tho direct supervision of coach carrick this system will provide ma terial iflie following year already familiar with carrick s methods the first gamo will find the state teachers college of kdinboro pa pro viding the opposition although tho kdinboro eleven is little known in this vicinity it is reporteil to be a hard one to beat following this contest the blue and white warriors will encounter one of the strongest teams on the schedule niagara university will come to the rotary field to attempt to keep intact its victorious record over the bisons rochester and hobart are ex pected to furnish the other thrillers of the season the complete schedule fol lows to freshman girls and all sorority girls are these rules which are to be in effect during the year 1928-29 rushing boxes these rules shall be binding upon all members actives and passives and pa trons of every affiliated fraternity who shall feel themselves honor bound to observe them in spirit and letter article i — pledging section 1 no student shall be asked to join a fraternity before she has ma triculated section 2 matriculation shall be de fined as day of enrollment or registra tion in the university or college section 3 to be initiated to a fra ternity a girl shall have passed at least twelve hours work and be carry ing twelve hours recognized by the registrar section 4 students in a university rammer school are ineligible for pledg ing by fraternities section .'). a pledge shall expire at the beginning of the next formal rush ing period after it was made nation al sororities see rule of national pan hellenic section 6 no girl who breaks her pledge to one fraternity shall be asked to join another fraternity until the end of the next formal rushing period section 7 any girl pledged to a fra ternity leaving college before she is initiated shall be considered released from her pledge at the beginning nf the next formal rushing period at the con clusion of which if she returns she is eligible for bids from all fraternities article ii — bushing section 1 the formal rushing period shall extend from 6 a m october 19 to midnight october 27 1928 assigned nights for parties shull be drawn by lot the first sunday and inst friday and saturday of the period being open section 2 there shall be no rushing ufter june first and till the end of the next formal rushing period section .'!. there shall be free asso ciation both in spirit and letter on the campus section 4 it is resolved that sorority shall not be the keynote of any off campus association during the closed rushing period section 5 invitations to parties on assigned nights and also to sunday par ties shall be sent out on the tuesday before the rushing period begins the replies to be received on or before the next thursday invitations to the par ties on the last two unnssigned nights shall be given out not before eight a m on friday and must be answered by 2 p m on the same day section 6 there shall be a meeting of the association in the fall at the frosh girls enjoy luncheon given by junior sisters on tuesdny september 18 the jun ior girls gave a luncheon for their freshmen sisters to get the sis ters acquainted the luncheon was held in foster hall and was enjoyed by both classes ruth glynn vice-pres ident of the junior class wus in charge it is the purpose of the junior sis ters to help the new girls through their first few days in the university to help them get acquainted with the other students and make them familiar with the various systems s a c to elect new chairman to fill vacancy left by mr farris at the first meeting of the s a c in october the tnsk of electing a new chairman must be faced eddie farris who was appointed to lead the student section this year will not return to school kddie always a popular man among the students and always deeply inter ested in student activities has accepted an appointment with the museum of natural history of new york as direc tor of research in the biological and comparative anatomy laboratories a substitute must be elected to fill the vacancy left by mr karris u a representative of the committee this will be taken care of by the student council announcement will be made in the next issue of the bek pledging
