the bee vol 8 university of buffalo may 18 1928 no 30 1928 summer session offers liberal schedule prominent faculty to conduct classes in many subjects education and music courses approved by state the 1928 summer session of the university of buffalo will open july 2 and close august 10 offerings for this year have been greatly extended and there will be a faculty of over fifty members some of whom are be ing brought from other institutions courses are being offered m art edu ction arts and sciences libraiy science business administration music mill pro-professional work for the undergraduate college stu ileuts there is a wide choice of elec lives on the schedule which includes art astronomy biology chemistry edu riitiun psychology english french german history mathematics music physics sociology public speaking anil dramatics and speech some able and experienced instructors have been pro cured for the art and music courses i well as for many others four teen courses m six different fields are riven for those interested in business administration and commercial teach irs training the library science course for school librarians and for those who are completing the one year course for a iliploma is offered under the direction of dr a h shearer aud is approved by the state extension division all the courses m education lead ing toward a new york state college graduation provisional certificate will be offered m the summer session the courses required by the state to qual ify us a teacher of special classes will also be offered including an oppor tunity to do practice teaching m the held a number of new courses espe dally m junior and senior high school holds for teachers supervisors and ad ministrators of school work the music course offered meets the requirements of the new york stato . department of education leading to a , music supervisor's certificate an art course also is presented lending to a , certificate for art teachers and super j council elects next year's officers ed carroll lauds past work of council the i ntei fraternity council of the university of buffalo closed a very successful season by electing officers for the ensuing year the officers are thomas moran president marvin cohen vice-president irving hyinan secretary harvey slocum treasurer dr h g hewitt faculty adviser ed carroll the outgoing president spoke of the accomplishments of the council notably the admission of the local council into the interfruternity council of the east dr hewitt m a summary of the work of the coun cil thanked the members for their co operation he said that the biggest step that of organization was com pleted and that m the future the council should prove to be very suc cessful in the discussion for the welfare of the council it was emphasized that all fraternities should be members of the council for their own and for the gen eral good fraternities at the pro fessional schools are especially urgod to join those fraternities that de sire to join the council should com municate with the president or sec retary of the council at the arts col lege 3438 main street the dues are 5.00 per year the secretary also graduates receive academic awards from yale scholarships granted in psychology and languages an announcement was made on fri day may llth by officials of the glad uato school that two buffalo students both graduates of the university of buffalo had shared m academic awards for next year at yale university mr samuel yochelson who received his bachelor of science degree m llll'li from the university of buffalo and his master of arts degree a year later was given a yale university fellowship for research m psychology mr yochelson for the past two years has been a mem ber of the psychology department of the university of buffalo a vale university scholarship for re search m romance languages was re ceived by mr joseph hoffman who re ceived the bachelor of arts degree from the university overflowed with enthusiastic graduates through the pages of alumni news the reader becomes acquainted with the learned men who have helped the uni versity grow the chancellors mr john t horton instructor m history and government has written a history of these men which appears m the alumni magazine in the march issue chan oellors bissell iorhani and charles phelps norton are given the praise they so justly merit chancellor norton was the donor of the chancellor's medal which is awarded each year for flu purpose of personifying civic pa triotism and vivifying public service m the council the faults m the football situation which are so well-know ii are mentioned and sug gestions are made for their remedy dr charles keene professor of hy giene and physical education stresses the need for better athletic equipment m what price qymnaslumf a most amusing account is presented of the reported death of dr byron pierce a graduate of the university of buffalo in the first issue of the year the alumni news printed comment on the death of dr pierce a letter was soon received from the subject of the death notice dr pierce called the notice greatly exaggerated parts of his
