for another elec tion is upon us when the smoke has cleared some lucky girl will find she has been selected cam pus sweetheart for moving up day but tween now and then the feuding will be hot and heavy any full time daytime female ub student carrying at least 12 hours of classes is eligible to run and each candidate running may be officially supported by at most two campus organizations any girl who does wißh to com pete must submit an entry application to mrs l 1 bbi e foels before 4:30 p m friday april 21 . write in candidates will be disqualified applica tion formß were deposited in nor ton union boxes today and also will be available at the candy counter with the returned entry applications must be included a 2 by 3 inch glossy portrait print of the candidate and five dollars to cover the cost of printing the print in the school publications the deadline again is friday april 21 after which no applica tions will be accepted in the election this year sched uled for early in may the campus sweetheart will be chosen by pop ular vote and will reign on may s moving up day with the two runners-up serving as her atten dants in the parade she will have her own float on which she will lead the parade her float will be provided and decorated by the mud committee no holds have been bared in uie campaigning which is sure to e wild and frightening except by small stipulation this stipu ation restricts the size of cam paign posters intended for dis play on campus bulletin boards to " maximum size of 14 by 22 in ohes dr brown to deliver address this afternoon dr c merrill brown professor of chemistry will give an address this afternoon at 4:10 in foster 210 sponsored by the student af filiates of the american chemical society mr brown one of the original members of the scientific staff of the crime detection lab of the buffalo police department will speak on scientific crime de tection and will stress the import ance of preventing the destruction of evidence history club pays tribute to dr kerr since the passing last january 12 of wilfred brenton kerr asso ciate professor in the history and government department the uni versity has felt a profound loss it would be hard to believe that there is a person on campus who has not at one time or other seen this man going from class to class during the summer he could be seen riding his english type bicycle up the walk to cros by hall often in midwinter he could be seen with books under arm and clad only in a grey felt hat green sport coat with orange plaid stripes grey flannel trousers and to be sure a tie that could be forgotten by no one his students will long remember him for his boundless energy his dry wit and his desire to be of service at all times no one could ever forget those famous words close books as he prepared for one of his weekly ten minute quizzes or that big smile that would flash across his face as he was about to tell the story of nell gwynn or the mistresses of charles 11 neither could one ever forget the promptness at which his quizzes or term papers would be returned last tuesday evening the his tory club paid final tribute to wilfred kerr by dedicating its spring meeting in his honor the program was divided into three parts one of which was dr kerr's contributions to european history given by mr barton bean mr bean pointed out several of dr kerr's literary accomplishments the second speaker of the eve ning was dean julius pratt of the graduate school of arts and sci ences who spoke on dr kerr's contributions to american history the third speaker was dr john horton chairman of the history department who spoke on wilfred kerr the man and the citizen dr horton told members of the his tory club of his long association with dr kerr and of the admira tion he had for him and his work he quoted a few of the passages from the chronicles or comic of the history department which dr kerr had written talent needed for nsa show a gala variety show will be pre sented in norton auditorium by the western district of the na tional students association on friday april 28 at 8:00 p.m the show will include talent from ni agara university canisius col lege st bonaventure buffalo tech and buffalo state teacher's college as well as from our own u b already entered from u.b are acts by blue masquers theta chi sorority sigma kappa sorority the team of frank romano and hal gitkind and six socks and a boot from niagara university there are however room for fif teen to seventeen acts in the show prizes awaits those who show effort in organizing their acts first prize is fifteen dollars as well as a cup to be presented by sigma kappa sorority second prize will be ten dollars and third prize five dollars all solo duet or group acts are eligible to enter what promises to be a tremendous display of amateur showmanship entrants must file applications by april 21 for further information contact bud jung ken pye or robena lail students apply for tutorial if now or by registration day in september you expect to have approximately 64 semester hours of credit you should confer with the chairman of the department in which you hope to major and notify him of your intention to ap ply for tutorial status in his de partmant the ordinary quantitative re quirement for admission to tutor ial status is 64 hours students of high standing are occasionally ad mitted with less if the application is endorsed by the department in which the student wishes to ma jor having secured this preliminary tentative approval you should then call at the tutorial office 292 hayes hall to file a formal application for acceptance by the department of your choice appli cations will be processed in order of their receipt and in due time you will be notified of its a ac sliderule sweetheart to rule esub dance on saturday night april 22 the engineering event of the year will take place at kleinhans music hall the engineers and the whole university they hope will be out in force at the annual e s u b scholarship dance enjoying the music of jay moran and his orchestra the sliderule sweet heart will be chosen during inter mission from the 3 top candidates selected by the engineers votes to be cast this wednesday thurs day and friday also the new e s u b officers which were elected at the april 5 meeting will be introduced tickets will be on sale in norton and the en gineering building or may be ob tained from members of the com mittee at 2.40 per couple s a n to offer scholarship award sigma alpha nu fraternity is offering a scholarship to a male student completing his freshman year in may to be awarded on moving up day may 6 the ba sis for deciding the deserving freshman will be scholarship ac tivities and need and the selec tion will be made by the scholar ship committee of üb applica tions may be obtained at the of fice of dean mcdonald and must be returned to that office before may 2 chi beta phi holds national convention chi beta phi the national hon orary fraternity will hold its 13th bi-annual national convention april 21 and 22 in buffalo the xi chapter of ub will be for the first time since its founding host for the convention the activities of the chapter composed of thirty chemistry physics psychology and engineering undergraduates and graduates consists mainly in the presentation and reading sci entific papers and the presenta tion of addresses by members and guests every year about this time everyone gets all excited about the annual home concert and this year being no exception a lot tias been heard about the 1950 at fair klelnhans music hall is the location of the concert and ball and the time is tonight at 8:00 sharp the choral ensemble band anc orchestra have been busy foi months preparing for this night a program of enjoyable music to suit a variety of tastes hardly anyone has missed seeing the gi gantic ballon moored in norton lobby announcing among other things that a semi-formal ball will follow the concert with danceable music to be supplied by paul pow ell and his orchestra the choral ensemble so strong managed by bill blueskye will be lead by mr van lier of course and is counted on to give their usual fine performance of well blended voices mr krestic will conduct the ub band which in the past has always come through with a surprise and is expected to uphold thft tradition paul powell is the manager of our six ty piece band jan wolanek is conductor of the augmented 40 piece orchestra the manager of which is harold wackenheim as is the custom at midnight tonight during the ball the new members will be tapped for cap and oown the ub women's hon orary society after the presenta tion of the new members cap and gown will award the freshman king to the outstanding freshman girl tickets for tonight's affair are on sale in norton lobby and from any member of the participating organizations the price is 76 a person for the concert alone and 2.50 a couple for the concert and ball attention organizations ! the beta sigma psi annual swimming meet will be held this year in conjunction with the phy sical education department the ili'lii sigma psi trophy will be awarded to the winner of the meet and points toward the p e m trophy will also be awarded to the participants organizations are not required o enter a full team in the meet applications may be obtained at clark
