the bee number 15 volume 30 buffalo n y friday february 24 1950 m 48 z-460 board of mngrs elections changed annual election wednesday march 15 ?> the annual election for the stu dent members of the board of managers is scheduled for wed nosday march 15 1950 any full time student not on probation who desires to be a candidate may se cure a petition blank in the direc tor's office there will be five candidates at large and three officers president vice-president and secretary these eight students will be elect ed by the entire student body in addition each bchool in the uni versity will elect one btudent to represent it on the board of man agers petitions for candidates at large must be signed by one hundred students from any of the univer sity day divisions candidates run ning from the college of arts and science school of business admin istration and engineering must have seventy-bve signatures from students in their respective schools only candidates running fiom the other divisions will be required to have twenty-five signatures from students in their respective schools only all petitions must be completed by monday march 6 and turned in at the norton candy counter before 5:00 p.m no petitions will be accepted af ter this date and there will be no write-in candidates full information for interested students will be available in the director's office communist given rope hangs himself forest grove ore — 1.p — ' when herbert j phillips who was discharged from the university of washington faculty last year re portedly for communist affiliation spoke to the student body at paci fic university recently he got a surprise at the conclusion of phillips talk dean of students d d darland took the platform and announced that on the previous evening he had written out a pre diction of phillips message and mode of delivery and had sealed copies delivered to other faculty members he then read a copy it was an accurate forecast to wit phillips would make a point of being a communist discuss well known evils and ills of the world while avoiding a discussion of communism as it is and seek to present himself as the personifica tion of communism darland ex plained he had been able to make the forecast although he had not heard phillips nor read any of his speeches because he knew what the communist line is with stud ents phillips was plainly surprised intercollegiate musicale mar 3 next friday march 3 at 8:00 p m the university of buffalo committee of the national stu dents association combined with the committees from st bonaven ture college niagara university and state teachers college will present an intercollegiate musicale it will be held on the stage of the hayes hall auditorium the university of buffalo will be represented by the following student-entertainers kerin kreiss accordion james tyler trumpet ray gillman vocalist and mary organic vocalist among the door prizes offered are n s a purchase cards and 16 passes to the shea's buffalo and teck theaters these were do nated through the courtesy of mr vincent r mcfaul the admission is fifty cents n s a purchase card holders may receive their tickets at half price attention senior men the university of buffalo offers a free placement service , for all students and graduates of the uni versity registrations for june placement for senior men will be accepted until march 15 1950 so far 50 of the business administration seniors have registered but only 12 of those in arts and sciences if you have not registered please do so immediately no applica tions music a beautiful hall and pleasant surprises the uniform the musical portion of the evening will be sport ing is one of continuous music the tailors are hal maclntyre and feature vocalist frankie les ter as an added shine to the musical member's appearance will be the locally popuular orchestra of jay moran who will serve dance material whenever the nationally famous hal maclntyle aggrega tion is taking a breather beyond all doubt the main ball room of thfc hotel statler is one of the nicest such rooms in west ern new york the proximity of the other hotel statler niceties such as the beautiful cafe rouge also adds much to a wonderfully planned evening of dancing no doubt you and your date will want to be dressed to fit the oc casion which is semi-formal this allows a wide range of clothing for the masculine half of the couple and not a very broad selection for the woman of his dreams this wide range runs the garnet of btyles from a conservative suit to the most formal of tuxedoes tails and if you have ever had plans for a really sensational evening in an at mosphere of cordial informality your wish will be fulfilled one week from tonight at the statler's main ballroom lewis cancels gamble top 15 acts to entertain on stunt nite show this year's annual stunt night promises to be outstanding in or ganization as well as in talent mrs libble foels has organized material provided by co-chairman carol moe and nanette nelson a system of elimination is being adopted prior to the show in order to provide the best evening ever presented for the benefit of u b students all organizations will be required to submit a complete list of those participating in the show by 5:00 this afternoon try-outs will be held march 3 the time of which will be posted later during the elimination judges will rate the acts by means of a point sys tem the top fifteen acts regard less of the type of organization will be permitted to appear at stunt nlte march 17 in a three hour show comparable to broad way itself a penalty of disquali fication from the show will be im posed on those having unruly dress ing rooms and stage before or dur ing the performance organizations must enter a de scription of lighting effects act name and any changes in program participants by march 1 prizes will be awarded at the show for the top three acts rated by out side judges on the basis of origin ality organizaton and audience appeal james decot will m c the affair the spotlight will also center on outside guest stars chosen from the fields of radio television and talent shows in and around buf falo these semi-professional stars will help to make the evening com pletely outstanding and worthy of your attendance nu coffee hour offers remedy for that t.f some like it hot some like it cold some like it in the pot nine days old k by chance you fall into the latter category you will hasten to take full advantage of the newly instituted coffee hour every friday afternoon from 3:00 to 4:30 in the west room ol nu this most recent innovation has been inaugurated as a permanent insti tution by the mixer committee prompted to a great extent by the huge success of a similar service during exams the mixer committee plans to continue the end-of-the-week par ties for ten weeks ending them on april 28th last friday's get-together re ceived promising student approval lor a continuous stream poured in to the west room to enjoy a crul ler and coffee donut dunkers are encouraged to be on hand to dem onstrate their skill before dash ing down to main and the ole s car in an effort to foster
