student undertakings of the uni versity of buffalo thlh year was announced this week the inter fraternity council by a unani mous decision decided to go ahead with all plans for a v b varsity sports ilanquet advisory chairman bob class announced that it will be held on tuesday march 15 1949 m the elks club banquet hall this in ter-fraternlty council - sponsored program has the active support and cooperation of the general alumni and the athletic policy committee this idea has already met with the overwhelming sup port of the fraternities m that sums varying from 10.00 to 113.00 have already been pledged the program will be highlight ed by a speech from the noted stu holcombe head football coach at purdue university other speakers will be announced later the purpose of this banauei i to pay trinute to our varsity ath letic teams for the wonderful sup port tbey have given to our uni versity and to promote athletics as a whole m the cily or buffalo assisting chairman mass is waring shaw president of the general alumni council and dr pairlton chairman of alumni ac tivities the committees have al ready been appointed and are well underway in their work iluvie lund has been placed m charge of contacting the alumni and school administration justin britt chairman of securing the banquet hall and the dinners has already done a remarkable job in this re spect joe hanssel and al krohn are already hard at work planning an elaborate souvenir program as a possible source of revenue jim sworobuk chairman of finance announced that over 350 dinner tickets will be put on sale at 5.00 a plate tickots will be sold by bob wilson and his staff to stu dents on campus and anyone inter ested m the promotion of athle tics m buffalo other committee men are jim ttppett m charge ot correspondence hank panascl sam gluckstein ely blausteln karl scull and m russell anyone who is at all interested m this project and would like to help should contact bob class advisory chairman we are assured that it will be something you will long remember russell stresses tolerance in time of national crisis speaking under the auspices of the u b hillel foundation m norton union last tuesday harold russell the handless veteran who starred m the best years of our lives issued a strong plea for racial and religious tolerance on the part of all americans the chunky young man with the incan descent smile stressed the need lor national unity m these troubled times which cannot be achieved while the country is divided by in tergroup prejudice and hatred mr russell felt that democracy h on trial m the war-weary world today and its principles must be upheld m action as well as thought it america is to remain the strong hold of the democratic way of life he also emphasized the point that every outbreak of prejudice m the united states is utilized as a basis for propaganda by the enemies of our way of life who delight m finding these flaws ' ah minori ties both racial and religious suf fer from the evils of intolerance mr russell said and so long as uch beliefs and practices are main tained the country will suffer the evils of internal dissension the famous incident of the jewish rab bi a catholic priest and a protes tant minister who surrendered their life belts so that other might sur vive the sinking of an american chip was cited as an example of the unity of action that can result when the artificial barriers that di vide mankind are overlooked the cambridge-born vet who ompleted 61 successful parachute jumps before a defective demoli tion fuse shattered his hands has been touring the country since the completion of his starring cinema performance and has kept m touch jvlth the men who are still hos pitalized as a result of their war time injuries russell stated that these men are particularly anxious over the future maintenance of the weals of democracy which they risked their lives to defend the rest of us he maintained must not allow their sale to raise funds for kenny drive this week offers an excellent oportunity for each u b student to do his part m assisting a most worthwhile cause the veteran's club with dick haberkron as chairman and all pan-hellenic so rorities are cooperating to help so licit funds for the sister kenny foundation the plan provides for box lunch es to be auctioned m norton lob by throughout this week the sales will begin at 11:16 each day a second sale will start at 12:15 and the final auction beginning at 1:15 the presiding auctioneers will be ken mallck tom hinckley and chuck hanatm each day finds a different so rority m charge and the follow ing are participating monday — theta chi tuesday — chi omega wednesday — sigma kappa thursday — alpha gamma delta and friday — sigma delta tail five girls m appropriate attire will represent each sorority the lunches are provided by the so rorities and the entire proceeds will go toward the support of the sister kenny foundation the highest bidder of each day will compete for recognition as the champion of the week the kenny foundation provides assistance to polio victims free of charge m spite of their prevailing financial circumstances an interesting movie revealing the frightening afflictions of infan tile paralysis victims and the sur prisingly effective treatments de vised by sister kenny was present ed last wednesday at norton it has been requested that stu dents patronize this worthwhile cause by joining the gang at the box lunch auction at norton this week tom breach provides continuous music at christinas dance if you haven't been a particu larly good little boy or girl this year don't worry the monty woo ly of the north pole may forget you because you cheat on exams and cut classes but good old nor ton union as usual has not for gotten youc on saturday dec 18 the annual christmas dance will be present ed m the main ballroom of the hotel statler and good bad or in different during the year you are all invited tom breach and his orchestra will provide continuous music for dancing from 10 p.m until 2 a.m as an added attrac tion there will be enough bar tenders all that is required of you is that you purchase a ticket today rated high on the social calendar of the university of buffalo and as such has always been heavily at tended m the past the christmas spirit that always prevails at such a function adds greatly to the oc casion sam programs aim at consolidation members of the student chapter of the society for the advance ment of management who are reg istered m the industrial engineer ing department offered a short program last tuesday dec 7 at 9:30 a.m for the benefit of busi ness administration students cur rently taking mr francis course m wage administration the pro gram consisted of a movie on job analysis sheets and short talks on industrial enineering functions and practices by prof j l turner and prof l p bassett mr francis students then visited the methods laboratory where equipment used by the methods engineer was shown and demonstrated the student chapter of s.a.m conducts such programs m order to bring students of industrial en gineering and business adminis tration closer together so that they may gain a greater understanding of each other's work aud exchange ideas u b credo club solicits funds to help care collections of cash for the bene fit of care will begin today by the credo club under the chair manship of tom lawson and will continue until the beginning of the christinas holiday members of the club will solicit funds m the various classrooms and boxes will be placed in norton union to re ceive the donations of those stu dents who are willing to share some portion of their wealth with the needy people of the world who face a bleak holiday season un less american aid
