the bee no 23 university of buffalo march 23 1928 vol 8 cheer and song contest is extended to march 26 best song will be judged in assembly tuesday high priced fountain pen and note book are prizes the contest for cheers and songs sponsored by the bee has caused so much activity and so many offerings have been received that the closing date has been shifted ahead to mon day march 20 this will give plenty of time for those who have been do liberating about sending in their work quite a number of songs have been received and mr ward has set them to musie these will be presented to the students in the assembly on tuesday march 27 if possible the best one will be chosen at that time the bee urges more students to write cheers a few have been received but more will increase the interest of the contest it is hoped that there will be time on tuesday to present them to tho student body for approval how ever if there is not the following as sembly will be devoted to that pur pose the prize for the best song will be a handsome seven dollar fountain pen and for the best cheer a large leather notebook the judging will be done by students slated in the audience the names of the judges will not be made public until the day of the assembly and they will not know who the writers are in this way personal relationships will not influence its decision get busy students write a cheer write a song and win a prize pharmic seniors invited on trip to detroit in may mr jack woodside to lecture on planned selling all students interested in subject invited to attend beginning with this year any senior student in pharmacy who fails in a sub j it but is given a condition is requir ed to be tutored in that subject so far this plan has worked out very well six cases have been reported where tu toring is completed and in the examin ations following satisfactory results on the whole were obtained because of the fact that the phar macy course has been changed from one of two to a course of throe years a senior who fails will be obliged to con tlnue two years instead of one in order to make up the work considering that two years spent for a make-up would cost about 1,500 it is quite plain that the cost of tutoring amounts to much less not to mention the amount saved in regard to time dr gregory announces that the fac ulty is planning to secure mid-semester lutings preparation for the examination schedule for finals has already been be gun the reason for such an early start is because the schedule is so complex iml because of the shortage in tin 1 nuiu bor of rooms available for holding ex aminations the department of materia medica in other words dr lemon has arranged lor u series of lectures to tho senior i hiss in pharmacy to which any student nf the late mr opler and mr weig on their exceptionally fine work this year's banquet is not a closed affair but is open to all thoso intor ested in debating and similar fields de bating is one of the major activities for which men and women from all the schools are eligible and one of the most important factors in establishing extramural contacts while an enjoyable evening is an ticipated it is perhaps more important that such gatherings lead to a better understanding and more efficient or ganization of important phases of stu dent interest therefore the students and faculty are cordially invited to the women's deb:ite team of the university of buffalo closed a most suc cessful season friday evening march kit li a spirited debate was held at the grosvenor library the university of buffalo opposing a te:im from syra cuse university the question was ■• resolved that the united states shall cease to protect its foreign investments before a formal declaration of war olarice sparberg kuth miller and gertrude stanley upheld the affirmative while the members of the syracuse team the misses church freeman and cowman argued for the negative the buffalo gills skillfully proved that armed intervention before war has been formally declared is not only directly opposed to international law ami treaties but is must unethical and in expedient in answer to tlie.se statements the negative strove to prove that interna tional law does not forbid armed in tervention that nothing else can ef fectually be substituted for it further more anything is pieferablc to the loss of life which war would bring about additional declarations on the part of the affirmative showed that such inter vention is opposed to our constitution and violates the sacred principle that governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed the judges were miss may stiokman miss frieda siegworth of the y w c a and mr of the marine trust bank miss church and miss sparberg spoke in rebuttal the de cision was unanimously in favor of the affirmative dean alden of the law school acted as chairman miss j keeler and mr travis read one-act play the regular student assembly was held in edmund hayes hall tuesday march 20 at 11:30 o'clock miss jane keeler former director of dramatics at the state teachers college and now the owner and director of the school of the theater and mr travis of the knulish department of the university of buffalo read a one-act play center ing in the institution of marriage miss keeler also read on the crea tion from the book god's trom bones a collection by james johnson the program was concluded by miss keeler who gave an original humorous monologue eating in a cafeteria and another taking the children bathing an announcement was made by wal ter stroman honor to alma mater the university of buffalo may be justly proud of the record achieved by its men's debating team which has re ' oently completed an extensive western ' trip the debating team's itinerary included fifteen universities and col 1 leges the u b men defended the af 1 ormative side of the question re ■solved that the united states shall ' 06r86 to protect by armed force capital 1 invested in foreign lands prior to a ' formal declaration of war only one 1 of the fifteen debates heard from on 1 going to press had been decided against 1 the buffalo team at marietta ohio the first stop of ' the trip the audience gavo the decision to it b the one expert judge present decided against the local team although the buffalo men clearly outpointed their opponents the dean of marietta college laid that the bisons were more polished anil the better team at ohio wesleyan there was no de cision due to the fact that this uni versity changed the question and man ner of judgeship at the last minute tin team next defeated capital uni versity at columbus ohio by a un animous decision of the judges be cause of the impossibility of arrang ing dates ohio state university with drew from the debate this making greenville college at greenville 111 the next stopping point here the judges gave the decision to the u b men by a 2 to 1 vote one of the most important debutes in the schedule was that against mar quctte university the team at mar quette is the champion debating team of the northwest it had won 30 dc bate on the question at issue but the u b team defeated marquette by a unanimous judges decision and also by audience decision at the university of st louis u b received the popular decision by a 10 to 1 vote the judges decision was forfeited by st louis as that univer sity had ailed to provide judges at carthage 111 u b won against car thage college by audience approval a 2 to 1 judges decision gave u b another success at jacksonville 111 against illinois college loyola uni versity at chicugo lost to the buffalo team by audience vote northwestern university withdrew from its debate and l'urdue university lafayette ind forfeited a decision to u b at dayton 0 the buffalo men won an audience decision against the university of dayton by an unanimous decision the judges acclaimed the u b team winner over western state teachers college at kalamazoo mich this debate was held before the lions business club on thursday 1 ) march 22 the team met kalamazoo college the results of this debate were unknown when the beo went to press morris opler melvin weig and ed ward tt carroll who made up the u b team on the trip deserve the warm com mendation of the university for the able manner in which they upheld the reputation of u b the men havo put in a great deal of hard work and the results of their efforts should givo every loynl student great prido no other college or university can boast a much higher record than that of u b in debating previous to the western trip the team lost to fordham university won a decision over new york university and a forfeit decision from manhattan university next friday the debate banquet will lie hel at the buffalo athletic club in honor of the team all those who ire interested in team's work and in debating are urged to attend roswell rosengren entertains u b club tuesday march 20 mr reid leads first of series of discussion groups next tuesday every member of the u b club must be out for it is the most important meeting of tho year the policies of next year what the club does and its whole future depend on tho result of the annual elections come out next meeting and put the right man in the right place come out and see that the men who shape the course by which the organization steers are the men who do university presbyterian church on tho relation of science and religion was very well attended and achieved sur prising results led by a man thor oughly conversant with both sides of tho subject the discussion brought up and settled many present day ques tions bemember the next one tues day at 5:00 bring a friend along next week the subject of the talk at the regular meeting will be a dis cussion of the foreign policies of the united states by a man recently re turned from china and personally fa miliar with problems there this tues day koswell bosengren spoke on the historical background and origin of most of our laws of today as illu strated in the babylonian code of ham murabi and the mosaic code the modern law of damages of insurance of usury and such lules as the parol evidence rule existed 2,200 years be fore the birth of christ many of the phrases of law date back to those times as the breaking of a contract at that timo the contract was made mi a clay brick and when completed
