pro vided by the concert and dance of the combined university of buffalo and amherst central high school bands on monday feb 21 in kleinhans music hall at 8:15 b.m this occasion offers an ex cellent opportunity to support the band for all profits will be devot ed to a fund allocated for the pur chase of uniforms for this organi atlon tickets are priced at 20 • person and are now on sale the program will be under the direction of john spine krestic who in his short term at u 8 has developed the musical aggr gction here to the point where it is recognized as one of the outstand ing bands in western n y mr istic who also serves as director the bands of the buffalo bills herst central high school and hie tonawanda post of the amer ican legion has prepared a show that is sure to delight all who at tend the musical portion of the eve ning will feature everything from beethoven to bop with marches ftnd novelties interspersed one of the featured performers of the evening will be paul powell u b student who formerly played with jan savltt's orchestra who will present a cornet solo titled boy meets horn the trumpet trio paul powell don mastrangelo and gordon fisher will play the ree jacks omedy will be furnished by rious members of the ensemble jn their version of an evening at the minstrel show with all the features of an old-time minstrel performance following the two hour concert there will be three hours of dancing in the mary sea ton room to the music of song etylist eddie granger and his or chestra your support of this concert will be deeply apreciated by the u b band which has not been able to ecure school funds for the pur chase of uniforms since the crea tion of the organization three years ago organized under the leadership of student-director ger jd marx and five charter mem bers the band has grown to the point where uniforms are absolute ay essential to its continued com petition with the musical groups mt other area colleges engineering panel to air cupy the three days of plenary sessions and committee meetings with each college delegation rep resenting a different un member nation dr waldo chamberlin of new york university will be confer ence advisor for the assembly the secretary - general for the meeting will be raymond f betts senior at rutgers and elwyn dav ies of haverford college is slated for the presidency of the assem bly earlier sessions revolved around league of nations problems rut gers the state university of new jersey played host to the model league assembly in 1938 while last year's conference took place at cornell university campus debating team snatches syracuse win hillery bradford and gerald rosenthal of the u b debating society soundly defeated syracuse university foes in a judged de bate last saturday morning at syr acuse the u b pair argued the affirmative side of the national de bate topic dealing with federal aid to education hamilton college forfeited its scheduled encounter with the u b team that afternoon houghton college cancelled an oregon style debate set for last monday due to illness of a team member this news disappointed local debaters since the oregon style calls for cross-examination between the opposing teams and was to be the first time the u b squad engaged in this type debate mr daniel gray once a top in ter-collegiate debater is the ad visor and coach of the u b group under his excellent guidance and in practicing principals of argu mentation u b debaters glean valuable experience from partici pation in the society member ship is still open and those stu conferred by the university of rennes in france upon chancellor samuel p capen of the university of buffalo with the degree the university of rennes isued a lengthy citation detailing chancellor capen's dis tinguished record in american higher education his teaching ca reer and his numerous publica tions the citation also noted the chancelor's invitation in 1938 to prof lucien wolff now dean and rector of the academy of rennes to come to the university of buf falo for a year on the mrs jo seph t jones foundation this was a first bridge thrown between the universities of buf falo and of rennes the citation stated rennes is happy to tight en today these bonds by conferr ing the degree ot doctor horonis causa upon professor capen chancellor of the university of buffalo she has wished thus to honor in him not only the eminent philoeogist but the men who have devoted their professional ac tivity to the organinatlon of high er kducation in the great ameri can repflbllc this degree was , actually con ferred at rennes on last novem ber 29 in the absence of dr cap en the diploma insignia and cita tion were accepted by the cultur al attache of the american embas sy at paris they decreasing for the third successive year the nation's college and univer sity enrollments have climbed to a new peak releasing enrollment figures furnished substantially all of the 1,800 institutions of higher education in the united states the u.s office of education revealed that enrollments this fall increas ed by over 72,000 students over last year despite a drop of 100 000 in number of veterans enroll ed total enrollment in all colleges and universities is 2,410,000 this year of this number 486,267 are studying at 20 institutions these twenty institutions enroll 20 per cent of all college students in the united states the rate of student drop-out is slowing down according to the survey this is indicated by the greater holding power ot colleges despite fewer freshmen students and a scaled-down veteran enroll ment last year's freshmen en rollment stood at 593,000 this year only 569.000 freshmen are reported veterans who formed about half of the nation's college student body in 1947 account for only 42 percent of the total enrollment in 1948 delaware florida mary land and new mexico are the only states showing increase in the number of veteran students this year greatest drop in veterans enrollments came at the junior college level approximately 50 percent of the veterans are enroll ed in 131 of the country's largest universities men still outnumber women al most 3 to 1 in the nation's col leges the proportion of women students has changed little this year over last fall the s to 1 ratio holds in the large universi ties although it goes down to slightly less than 2 to 1 in liberal arts colleges and is more nearly 1 to 1 in teachers colleges the proportion of women freshmen is slightly hlgher'in 1948 than it was in 1947 in all types of institutions the survey
