the bee the greater university of buffalo weekly university of buffalo may 2 1930 no 25 vol 10 parade and campus activities feature moving-up day mammoth parade starts from terrace at 10:30 tomorrow bands floats and caps in spirited downtown frolic the greatest parade in the history of the university is forecast for sat urday morning when the annual moving-up day exercises will com mence with a mammoth procession at 10:30 a m advance notices indicate that well over 1,000 students will par ticipate and all others who have not so responded are urged to be at the starting point as well over 40 fraternities and clubs and other organizations have signified their intentions of entering floats in the auspicious cavalcade and each of the six colleges has organized for either a group or a inarching section as usual prizes will be awarded for beauty and for grotesqueness but this year tomorrow the awards to be dis tributed are more useful more osten tatious than ever before the best organized school arts business ad ministration law medicine dentistry and pharmacy — will receive a silver loving cup the prettiest float and the most ludicrous float no matter what the sponsoring organizations or institutions are will each win a broad rectangular blue and white banner to boot the most cleverly apparelled individual will receive an expensive green fountain pen all of the prizes are now on exhibition in the hayes hall library — the banners and the fountain pen on the bulletin board and the trophy on the table the judges will be dr a bertram lemon dr harold g hewitt dr donald m kumro and dr margaret c swisher the parade will assemble between 10:15 and 10:30 in the morning at the flagpole at main and exchange streets at the latter moment promptly the cavalcade will proceed north up main street to tupper west to delaware south to chippewa and west to hutchinson central high school for the early afternoon pro gram many traditional and social events mark senior week gowned seniors hold forth in week of glory senior week — this period of glory for the seniors of the college of arts and sciences and business adminis tration starts next monday may 5 announced general chairman john priebe yesterday monday will see the senior women under the direction of viola stanfield chairman miriam cristall helen munro eileen o'malley gladys bardy margaret arbuthnot ridall and winifred stanley selling roses this rose day is an annual custom and the seniors anticipate a rapid sell-out for the traditional flower tuesday evening at 6:30 p m the arts seniors will attend a class re union and dinner dance at the hotel statler professor francis h bangs | will speak on reminiscences of four years at the university of buffalo chancellor capen dean macdonald and dean park will be the guests of cabaret dance to be held next week at spanish tavern on friday may 9th at ten o'clock the inter-fraternity council will hold its second annual cabaret dance the scene of the festivities will be kauff man's spanish tavern on genesee street superb music will be fur nished by the regular tavern orches tra which is well known to those who infest that place of entertainment those in charge of the supper dance are howard wright chairman dexter levy gerald de vaughn sid ney haniford tickets may be purchased from the members of the committee or mem bers of the various fraternities rep resented for the nominal sum of two dollars and seventy-five cents a couple noted astronomer at scientific symposium may 6 7 and 8 will mark the eighth annual scientific symposium sponsored by the university of buf falo canisius college and the buffalo society of natural sciences each of these institutions will preside on these respective dates at the evening meet ings in the museum dr charles e st john astronomer of the mt wilson observatory at pasadena california has selected the following subjects for his lectures may 6 exploring the sun's at mosphere ' may 7 the material constitution and extent of the universe may b—"the8 — the observational status f the einstein theory dr st john's position among men of science is an outstanding one dr von frisch of germany lectures at medical school in wednesday evening april 23 a nly interested audience of both faculty and student representation gathered at the medical school to hear dr karl von frisch's talk on the physiology of the sense organs f insects dr von frisch gave a most fascinating account of his re searches and experimental work with bees in his open-air laboratory at munich germany the lecture was e illustrated with a series of re able slides and moving pictures ing the sight smell and hearing reactions of the insects to the stimuli rie unique dancing reactions of was a subject about which much usiasm and interest was centered and it started the ball of round table discussion rolling immediately at the inclusion of the talk schools far from charities goal the results of the joint charities campaign in several stu dents have complained that they have not been approached mathematicians urged to attend club elections the next meeting of the mathe matics club will be held tuesday may fi at eight 1930 will be presented by the university of buffalo evening session students association on saturday evening may 3 in the hotel statler ballroom the ballroom will be decorated to represent a fashionable night club the guests will be seated at tables encircling the dance floor there will be dancing between acts and up until two o'clock music for dancing by the century 12-piece orchestra mr roswell p rosengren director of the follies has announced that miss kathryn black who has just completed an engagement with show boat and was formerly with hold everything will do a specialty dance solo and also participate in another musical number miss black returns to new york shortly after the com pletion of the follies to begin a long term engagement with ziegfield a series of other specialty numbers including a girls dancing chorus are comprised mainly of talent drawn i from the university student body ■more than 100 students will take part one of the features of the program will be the übessa singing chorus a group of students trained by miss emily louise hallock miss harriett stumpf will accompany the singing chorus mr herbert u feuchter is in charge of the musical numbers and is assisting mr rosengren the executive staff for the follies is walter a giles chairman loretta m straubinger vice-chair man earl cruikshank business manager karl helfrich advertising manager paul t walker ticket sales pro motion c edward wesley finance chair man chemists listen to dr g f rugar of niagara falls the chemistry club which met last thursday evening april 24th in the usual university club rendezvous re ports an evening of chemical inspira tion and facetious entertainment en joyed by the whole enthusiastic as semblage the chemical treat came from the speaker dr george f rugar affili ated with the hooker electric com pany of niagara falls as research chemist he expounded in detail the fascinating procedure of preparing gold sols vitale capacitated as a mind reader to the great amusement of everyone victims included the religious fan cies of some the selection of smooth femininity by others personal defi ciencies and even car defects were all brought to reputed to be frolic at rotary field to conclude moving-up events the initial great frolic to be in dulged in by every student in the en tire university is scheduled for sat urday evening in rotary field the concluding episode of the momentous moving-up day also for the first time girls will be present to render the evening a social success as well as a mirth-making funfest and to add to the anomaly of the occasion many girls are coming all by their lonesome so that the fellows who trail along stag will not fall from the picture the frolic will begin at 8 p m and all automobiles will be parked in a circle focusing their headlights on a huge bonfire in the environs of which most of the outdoor activities of the evening will be held games will be played and a general good time had at 9:30 o'clock coach biffy lee will award the prizes to winners in the track and field meet slated for saturday afternoon for the third great unique feature of the evening the gymnasium will be decorated and the floor waxed for dancing an orchestra of students including porter ruthven david feld man and sidney yasgur and numer ous others will furnish the music to which terpsichorean feet will weave entrancing steps then to be sure cider and dough nuts will be served and to add to the pleasure of all the whole business will be gratis and who cares who will foot the expenses incurred but folks the committee urges that both girls and fellows wear old clothes for nothing more than to increase the informality of the frolic chancellor capen to make awards at convocation exquisite fra ternity it will begin at 3 p m at nichols field a great many entries have been received from all the schools of the university each of the colleges seem to have good squads and com petition will be keener than ever it is imperative that all contestants be at nichols field at 2 p m the pharmics once considered a dark horse will enter the meet in final bios club meeting promises sensational time everyone is urged to attend the last but most significant meeting to cul minate bios club activity thursday may 8 in the lounge this is to be a joint meeting with the chemistry club three student papers are to be pre sented arlene dobmeier will furnish the chemistry contribution seymour farber and miles kelly will supply the papers of biological interest the social aftertime promises to be a
