the bee vol 8 university of buffalo january 6 1928 no 12 lack of support delays publication of iris members of staff ask for cooperation of student body photographs of campus activities prove only drawback although the iris staff has been busy for practically the whole semester the ical work is just ahead and must be done within tho next two months this may seem like a long time but those who know tho publication game will toll you differently of all the publi cations the year book is undoubtedly the most difficult to publish after con siderable planning it is the task of the year book staff to collect all writeups have all pictures taken and have all advertising material in in the short space of seven weeks — 10 days of which coincide with mid-year examinations the task of collecting material re quires every member to put in consid erable time but often it is necessary to spend many extra hours in ' ' chas ing around for material which was not banded in when due most students being human have the tendency to keep • ' putting off until tomorrow what they can do today thus our experience has been that much of the material gets into our hands two three or even four weeks late naturally the publishing of the book is delayed just so many weeks still some people cannot under stand why tho annual is not out on time therefore we ask you to please send in any material for the 1928 iris as soon as possible we cannot begin work on the dummy until all ma terial is in the hands of the printer another request — we beg every stu dent in the university to cooperate with us in all matters pertaining to the iris especially tho matter of photog raphy this branch of the year book has always given the staff considerable trouble and is usually the cause of much friction between staff and stu dents each student asks why we didn't get this photographer or that photog rapher if we abided by their wishes it would be necessary to sign contracts with every photographer in buffalo and many outside of buffalo so we find it better to let the staff choose this year's staff decided on white studio of new york who rank among the best photographers in the country the prop osition we secured is briefly that each senior pay 3 at tho time his or her individual picture is taken — 2 of which is given to the iris to place the sen ior's picture and writeup in the book and 1 goes to the photographer the latter recognizes this one dollar as a deposit i.e if the student orders fin ished pictures one dollar 1 will be deducted from the total bill the staff feels complimented in secur ing such a proposition tho initial price for each student is less than that of last year and last year the initial pay ment was not subtract d from the bill for orders thus both those who order pliotos and those who do not are bene fited by this contract with white studios all pictures will be taken during the month of february the location of the studio will be announced in a later edition of tho bee any picturo not taken by february 29 cannot go in the book we are sorry that we must do his but surely there is no one who cannot go to the photographers for 10 0r 15 minutes on at least one day in february no person or group will be required 1 to wait when having a picture taken only university of buffalo pic tures will be taken during this month s ° no one must wait an hour or so be lore the photographer is ready for him n'ow regarding the iris itself — much n rk has been done — many writeups are i if you have not been asked for your titeup you will be approached in the ear future and we trust you will co rporate with us for the annual is pub ished by the students and is not a staff ook which latter thought is quite mmmon among the undergraduate body fellowships offered year foster and edmund hayes halls are strung with colored lights which can be seen for a great distance from a high window in foster hall strings of 30 lights hang down to form a christmas tree two lighted wreaths also add their beauty to the building even the entrance lights have been re placed by red and green lanterns which harmonize with the rest of the decora tion for the first time edmund hayes hall has christmas decorations as at fos ter hull four long strings of lights are hung to give a christmas tree effect at each end of the bays wreaths of colored lights are also placed in the large tower a lantern is hung which gives forth four colors making a light like that of old church windows even higher than this about 160 feet above ground the belfry is illuminated by 20 lights which are arranged around a pule with five different colored lights hung on each of the four sides the ef fect is that of rows of candles sending a glow over the surrounding region the janitors have worked hard to make this lighting system a success one appreciative on looker describes the seine as showing that the good cheer of the people is growing until with the belfry light as a parallel it is seen coining out on the top women's glee club to inaugurate new restrictive policy the women's glee club is inaugurat ing a new policy which promises to raise the already high standard which the loss the bulls will again attempt to bring home the bacon when they meet ho bart university tonight at the elmwood music hall the powellmen for the past two years have succeeded in de feating the hobart quintet and enter (.,;,. high hope or this year's struggle hobart however comes to buffalo with a stronger five than in previous years and a stiff battle is in store for the blue and white according to reports from the ho bart camp the invaders scored a win over hamilton recently and come here fully prepared to avenge last year's de feat the bison cagers are out to pay a debt incurred this year at the expense of the football team and from the past appearances of the bulls the outcome as far as hobart is concerned is dubious captain bass the star of the cor nell game and his four cohorts liob inson brizdle stoesser and fanow will probably start against the invad ing quintet tho game will start at 8:30 and dancing will follow with the music by the u of b seranaders sup port tho team lack of support necessitates second subscription drive the bee is circulating seventeen hundred copies every week among the students of u of b of this number less than twenty-five per cent are paid for in subscriptions perhaps this is because the students have not been given a real chance to subscribe and in order to eliminate this reason the bee is conducting another campaign if you have not subscribed you will be approached and asked to do so this subscription will be taken from your breakage fee thus eliminating the necessity of your paying now if you read the bee you are expect ed to subscribe money is necessary to pay expenses and good wishes and in tentions are of no avail so subscribe blue and white vanquishes cornell in thriller 30-29 crowds hoarsely support both teams in close struggle brizdle bass and farrow show class against ithacans in one of tlie most thrilling heart rending games over played on a buffalo court tin buffalo basketeers defeated ill big bed team from ithaca by a scant one point margin with the final score reading 30-29 fur the three con secutivo years cornell and buffalo have presented excellent exhibitions each time with the same result a victory for the home team the result of this strug gle and the ua i mouth game two weeks ago puts the university of buffalo on i level with the best teams of the east last year cornell was the only team in the intercollegiate league to beat dartmouth and this season both of theso teams presented veteran aggrega t s in buffalo bass hero of contest the lion s share of tho praise goes to the plucky blue and white captain for the victory over cornell for it was he who was inserted into the lineup after he had been removed with a bad ly bruised knee in a last desperato effort to stem the tide with but a minute to play ami cornell leading by two points hy grabbed the tip off and dribbled around the whole cornell team to insert the leather from under the uprights tying the score at 29 all bass again gut the ball on the ttip off but he was fouled as he was dribbling and while the ciowd held its breath he calmly dropped the leather in the bas ket for what proved to be the winning point a l-i st desperate effort by cor nell failed and as the gun barked the crowd went into a frenzy of cheering and shouting buffalo takes lead brizdle stinted the scoring when the game was several minutes old by mak ing good on two attempts from the white lino and farrow and jetter put the bisons out in front with a double decker apiece masten scored three held goals and layton a free shut but briz dle's air basket discounted our of these and buffalo was still in the lead biiz dlo sunk another two pointer but schlossbach tied the score with a free throw and a two pointer after cald well had added a five large colleges withdraw from women intercollegiate assn i northampton mass ip — five of . the largest women's colleges in the i country sever od their connections with i the women's intercollegiate associa tion for student government at the convention of that group last week at smith college here the withdrawing colleges are smith vassal wollesley bryn mawr and mt holyoke in tendoring the resignation of the group maitha biehlo of wellcsley ex plained this group of live colleges has de cided that too much money aud energy is spent on conferences in student government which overlap each other and have the same aims the jive col leges therefore have decided to suppoit only two conferences in student gov ernment one to be held in the spring ami attended only by representatives of the live aud the other the much larger conference of the national stu dent federation at the former the live will discuss their own peculiar problems and at the larger conference they will meet the problems of the other colleges throughout the country the live colleges would like however to send visiting delegates to the women's intercollegiate association for student government in order that they may keep in touch with the association the resignation of the five institu tions was accepted and an invitation extended to them to send visiting dele gates in the future the college for women of western reserve university at cleveland ohio was selected as the meeting place of tho conference next year november 1928 and as is customary the presi dent of that conference will be the delegate from western reserve the vice-president will be the ohio wes lcyan delegate and the secretary the wooster delegate the present delegate from western reserve auetta cross was elected graduate advisor of next year's conference delightful exams to help brighten our gloomy return it is our sad fate as students to be forced at this time of the year to de scend from the sublime to the ridicu lous in returning to school far indeed is the drop from the sublimity of two weeks of freedom of whole days of sleeping aud eating and whole nights of dissipation to the ridiculousness of dragging our weary bones out of bed at unearthly houis to sleep through endless classes as of yore but let us not despair utterly for not far away is a bright spot on the hori zon to cheer our drooping spirits after only two weeks of daily grind the deadly monotony will again be broken by an event always greeted with in tense excitement and enthusiasm mid year exams what could be mine de lightfully invigorating than this eager ly-awaited treat once more we will delight in the freedom from the routine of classes — freedom to browse at will on the plentiful alfalfa supplied by pro fessors during the term once more we will spend whole nights dissipating — over our books and whole days gorging — our minds what a hope to live for let us then give full credit to the powers of the university who in this infinite wisdom have forseen how tame must be the weeks following a vacation and who have therefore provided so thrilling an event for our belief be sides it is rumored although it seems too much to hope for that the authori ties will even consider granting tu de serving students a permanent leave of absence after mid-years such mag nanimity certainly demands our heart iest admiration and respect continued on page .'!, col 4 continued on page 2 col 1 get your bison all those not having received the football and christmas issues of the bison may do so by go ing to the
