september 18 at 10:30 o'clock dr mcconnell newly chosen chancellor of the uni versity of buffalo emphasized the necessity for the student to exert the greater part of his energy towards scholastic goals there is no good substitute for substantial scholastic achievement warned chancellor mcconnell if you fail to put first things first you are almost certain to be dis appointed when employers select graduates for appoint || ment i social experience was said by i chancellor mcconnell to be the i secondary aspect of the student i life at the university the chan i cellor made special note that he i was not referring to parties the i number of dates the student has i clubs committees or the such but i rather to the number of persons i the student will come to know i whose company will bring stimu i lus and enjoyment i chancellor mcconnell continued i by saying one of the most un i fortunate things that can happen i to you is to confine your social i contacts to people very much like i yourself in background in inter i ests in ideas i concerning the planning of the ■students educational program i chancellor mcconnell is of the i opinion that although there is a i need for specialization there is i also need for the student to see the specialties in a broad pattern of social relationship it is also the purpose of the university said chancellor mc connell to make clear the con ditions and responsibilities of free dom to foster an efficient and adaptable mind and to encourage the cultivtion that inevitably char acterizes a truly educted person the subject of freedom was dis cussed by chancellor mcconnell in which he asserted that our free doms such as intellectual freedom in the university are never safe and in periods of danger and hys teria like the present are particu larly insecure chancellor mcconnell believes that more intelligence more integ rity and heightened sense of re sponsibility should be the goal of the student and if the student does not grow in those qualities of houi'ht and action he and the university have failed university of buffalo sets up central deferment committee it is of the greatest importance for the long-range success of the
